“We are what we hide.” I read that somewhere. Must have been sometime ago. Or maybe I wrote it myself. From experience. I’m not really sure, but I know its truth. Our fallen hearts spin artifacts of fear; confining, hiding, confusing, obscuring. Betraying neighbors and friends, family, lovers, with only ever the partial glimpse, a pretense, or a parade. In the end, a fraud. I read that somewhere. Or maybe I wrote it myself. Just prior to the full onset of the COVID quarantines I had begun a color study using simple red on red mixed with texture. But as the disruption of isolation grew into a new reality this became a series of pieces exploring how the virus was affecting our common notions of home and health and security. The deep red field became the quarantine's circumscription, its frame disrupting and re-defining otherwise normally ordered life within its boundary.

NO GIFS AND ANIMATED ICONS, PLEASE!

"From couch potato to marathon runner in four months", so says Steve Dubois who's decided to run the 26-mile London Marathon on April 17 to raise money for the Charlie and Kathleen Dunnery Children’s Fund. The charity is based in a little town called Egremont, which is where I lived for a few of my pre-school years, and you can read about them at www.ckdcf.org/home.html.

Steve asked three of us to curate exhibitions of photographs for sale through RedBubble. In addition to the one I've pulled together on Abstracts, Jason Theaker did Landscapes and Bob Davis The Fens. Please, please do spend a moment to look at the pictures and, even better, please buy something. Steve is going to raise £6,000 and I would like the photography exhibitions to contribute as much as possible to that total. So please help!

Twenty five people have been absolutely superb in joining with me and donating an image for the Abstract exhibition. (Each photographer retains the rights to their image but has granted Steve a non exclusive right to sell the shots for his fund-raising campaign). There will also be a Blurb book very soon but for now heartfelt thanks from Steve and me to the 25 Abstractionists!

Many thanks!

Sam Gilliam a color field painter and lyrical abstractionist artist is associated with the Washington Color School, a group of Washington, D.C. artists that developed a form of abstract art from color field painting in the 1950s and 1960s.

And as we draw colored curtains we dream

A "Sun Harp" comprised of "dragon lines", elemental dragon shapes, like energetic sine waves, catches the early morning light and plays a symphony of photons. Like Aeolian Harps that are set up high in windy places to catch the billowings of the passing air and turn it into a magically indeterminate music, Sun Harps, which don't exist yet, would catch all the varying tones of solar rays on their "strings" and provide us with symphonies of light. Putting Sun and Aeolian Harps together, perhaps as one fantastical instrument might just be an art of the future. Right now, it's fun to imagine.

One last abstraction before the close of the year. It's been great bringing back my abstractionist sensibilities through the digital / photographic idiom. I've found a new abstract voice this way and found it curious to see how I composed in the digital form.

Music Link: "Bringing Down the Light. David Sylvian & Robert Fripp from their album "The First Day". Although the piece is credited to both artists, it sounds very likely that this is entirely the work of Fripp on his midi-guitar interface. A sublime and light filled piece of rarified beauty.

The music of stone sings in a massive frequency to slow for our little ears to hear. Its slow waves and tectonic harmonics forming chords of crystal, granite bass and the igneous fire of magmic melody. Indeed the Earth sings to herself and to the other planets as well, a grand chorale of living holography that sets the tune in our DNA.

I graduated from Art School as an abstract painter under siege. It was NOT the time to be painting even, never mind painting abstract images. It was the heyday of conceptualism, installation and deconstruction. But I followed my muse, not the trend of the time. My inspirations were Gerhard Richter, Max Ernst and Jules Olitski. This image was created from a photograph of a detail of a crumbling mural, with paint peeling itself off the concrete. It was rich in texture and detail which made it ripe for manipulating. There's always that recalcitrant abstractionist lurking under my surface !!!

I'm dedicating this image to Zone Patcher. For the Longest time I have been blown away by his "3D" fractal work. The complexity of it and the sheer, unbridled imagination of it all is something I admire tremendously. I wanted to wait until I had an image that I felt suited him.

Music Link: Robert Rich & B. Lustmord, "Hidden Refuge", from their album "Stalker". Rich and Lustmord's music here is a species of ambient music known as "dark ambient" which seeks to create atmospheres of mystery and a kind of dark grandeur, instead of peaceful, lambent washes. "Stalker" is a classic in the genre. ToR Oct 11, 2013.

NON HO PAROLE.

I HAVE NO COMMENTS TO DO.

One of a series of digital conceptual abstractions created after an illuminating discussion concerning the location of the wellspring of pure abstraction deep in the human mind and inner resources of the individual, with fellow abstractionist Lee Kaloidis. The piece is influenced in style by both cubism and surrealsm, but in this case that is irrelevant to the message.

A new kid on the block: Quadralectics in Northampton, Massachusetts. (Facebook) It might not be the same as the quadralectics philosophy, but the intentions are good.

I visited Northampton in 1998, as part of a fact-finding trip to T.S. Eliot's ''Dry Salvages''.

www.flickr.com/photos/quadralectics/albums/72157628538542485

The city of Northampton is the county seat of Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of Northampton was 29,571. Northampton is known as an academic, artistic, musical, and countercultural hub.

SEPT 6 - 28 FINAL WEEK!

QUADRALECTIC: A SOLO GROUP SHOW

“Quadralectic: A Solo Group Show,” is a unique exhibition curated by Malinda Labriola featuring the work of four artistic personas, each representing a different facet of Malinda’s artistic practice. Meet the Artists:

Siggie Zampa, the cartoonist, shares humor through playful cartoons created using just two vibrant colors.

R.L. Stilzkin, the illustrator, opens up detailed worlds with intricate line drawings of whimsical characters that spark the imagination.

GASEO, the abstractionist, captures the essence of motion and energy by using the movement of cars to create dynamic line drawings, often transformed with watercolor

Mal Labriola, the printmaker, merges nature and art by crafting unique prints and compositions with ink pads and local flora.

“Quadralectic” celebrates the idea that creativity is defined but not limited by the media we use, and that art can flourish when made with discernment rather than judgment. As the title would suggest, “Quadralectic” places bodies of work in dialog to create a synergistic blend of artistic voices, underscoring that our diverse expressions can work together, enrich the whole, and encourage the exploration of what art can be. Each piece in this show invites people of all ages to explore their creativity and find artistic personalities of their own that might be waiting to emerge. We hope to see you there!

The Dry Salvages is the third poem of T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets, marking the beginning of the point when the series was consciously being shaped as a set of four poems. It was written and published in 1941 during the air-raids on Great Britain, an event that threatened him while giving lectures in the area.

Inspired by the works of Ben Nicholson the English post-cubist abstractionist. See for example: www.johnmyatt.com/images/BenNicholson_jpg.jpg
