Title: A Glacial Figure
Physics Explanation: This image was taken on top of a glacier looking into the pure blue water typical of glacial water. The reflection is specular (mirror-like) and is created due to light rays traveling from the person (angle of incidence) and striking the plane of the water only to bounce back (reflected ray) at a similar angle into the camera lens. The reflection is not crisp due to vibration in the water and also because of the fact that some of the light rays pass through the water and refract (bend) and are not reflected back to the camera.

Day 2: A room of Rothko paintings at the Tate Modern. Bankside, London, UK. [20060216]
Mark Rothko saw these paintings as objects of contemplation, demanding the viewer's complete absorption. They were originally commissoined for a restaurant, but Rothko soon realised that their brooding character required a very different environment.
In the late 1950s, Rothko was commissioned to paint a series of murals for the fashionable Four Seasons restaurant, in the Seagram Building on Park Avenue, New York. He set to work, having constructed a scaffold in his studio to match the exact dimensions of the restaurant. However, the murals were darker in mood than his previous work. The bright and intense colours of his earlier paintings shifted to maroon, dark red and black.
Roth was influenced by Michelangelo's Laurentian Library in Florence, with its blind windows and deliberately oppressive atmosphere. Rothko commented that Michelangelo 'achieved just the kind of feeling I'm after - he makes the viewers feel that they are trapped in a room where all the doors and windows are bricked up, so that all they can do is butt their heads forever against the wall.'
Recognising that the wordly setting of a restaurant would not be the ideal location for such a work, Rothko withdrew from the commission. He finally presented the series to the Tate Gallery, expressing his deep affection for England and for British artists, especially JMW Turner. All nine paintings are included in this display. Perceived, as the artist intended, in reduced light and in a compact space, the subtlety of the layered surfaces slowly emerges ,revealing their solemn and meditative character.

He was only an elderly gentleman, hitching a ride on the misty wet highway. I asked him where he was heading and he said he had no real destination in mind.
He then said "That is beautiful music you're playing. Who is it?". I told him it was Various Artists - Pick n Mix Volume 2 from a great netlabel called Faturenet Recordings.
His eyes lit up with excitement. He said "My name is George Ripley, and I am the greatest travelling salesman who's ever lived! There is nothing I can't sell!".
I noticed that he had a small briefcase on his lap and said "So what do you sell these days? Insurance? Pensions? Broadband? I'm just curious".
He laughed and replied "Oh dear no, my young friend! You see... I sell people their SOULS!".

On July 4, 2024, I took my camera Zenza Bronica S2A (Japan, 1972-1977) for a tour in the district of Fourvière, Lyon, France.
The Nikkor normal lens 1:2.8 f=75mm was equipped of a Hoya Yellow (K2) 67mm screwed filter and the dedicated Zenza Bronica metal hood.
I used an Ilford FP4+12-exposure negative 120-format film . The film was exposed for 64 ISO (to compensate the filter absorption) using an Autometer III Minolta lightmeter fitted with a 10° finder for selective measurements privileging the shadow areas.

After the view #12 exposed, the film was fully rolled to the taking spool and was developed in a Paterson tank with a spiral adapted to the 70mm large film. 500 mL of Adox Adonal (Agfa Rodinal) developer were prepared at the dilution 1+25 and the film processed for 9min at 20°C.
Digitizing was made using a Sony A7 camera (ILCE-7, 24MP) held on a Minolta vertical macro stative device and adapted to a Minolta MD Macro lens 1:3.5 f=50mm. The light source was a LED panel (approx. 4x5') CineStill Cine-lite fitted with film holder "Lobster" to maintain flat the 70mm films.
The RAW files obtained were inverted within LR and edited to the final jpeg pictures without intermediate file. They are presented either as printed files with frame or the full size JPEG.
All views of the film are presented in the dedicated album either in the printed framed versions and unframed full-size jpeg accompanied by some documentary smartphone Vivo Y76 color pictures.
Strangely, although its 1.8 kg the camera is not at all uncomfortable to carry, especially when the camera is hold on the chest by the neck strap. I did not feel tied after this photo tour (about 4km walking). It is easily to get a good stability and a precise framing with the camera on the chest.
Details about the camera :
The Zenza Bronica’s S (ゼンザブãƒãƒ‹ã‚«) were often referred to the « Japanese Hasselblad ». Conceived in the year 50’s (Bronica D, 1959) was manufactured in ToKy,o Itabashi-ku, Minami-Tokiwadai with the Japan engineering spirit of that time : « we wlll do as … in better! »; The Bronica (ETR, SQ series) camera’s were progressively discontinued twenty years ago between 2002 and 20O4 and the brand was bought by Tamron company and disappeared from the market.
The Zenza Bronica S2A was produced by Bronica Insdutries founded by Yoshino Zenzaburo, between 1972 and 1977 and was the ultimate model of fully mechanical medium format modular SLR o th e S series. The camera in made in stainless steel 18-8 quality for the outer elements. The S2A is still a focal-plane shutter camera with automatic diaphragm and automatic film back coupled to the shutter cocking through a re-arming crank. Bronica were equipped either with Nikon Nikkor lenses, Zenzanon of Komura optics.
I got this exemplary from a French eBay auction for a quite reasonable price, equipped with a Nikkor-P normal lens 1:2.8 f=75mm, a generic 67mm lens cap, and a neck/shoulder Bronica strap. I found at my monthly trade -exchange photo meeting new-old stock 67mm filters (Hoya HMC anti-UV, Yellow K2, and a Zenzza Bronica Skylight 1A) and two shade shade hoods (one generic foldable and a rigid metal Zenza Bronica Japan). I also found a nice storage box 15x20x20cm to store the machine with silica-gel protectant.
The camera fit in my ThinkTank Retrospective 5 usual bag as easy as my French TLR Semflex. The weight is however twice more heavy by about 1.8 kg (0.8 kg for my Semflex TLR).

Wetlands are biodiversity rich sensitive ecosystems that harbor hundreds of plants, insects, birds and other animals uniquely adapted to their wetland mode of life.They are crucial to maintain the regional water balance through ground water recharge and absorption of flood waters and also serve as the rice bowl of developing countries. Nevertheless, wetlands play immense role in the socio-economic and livelihood aspects of local communities living around the wetland. In India, rural communities depend wetland for livelihood through farming, mat making etc; for food through fishing and hunting; for roof thatching by collection of reeds and palm leaf ; for firewood; for fodder etc. However, these wetlands are now under a threat of conversion for big industrial and real estate projects, change in lifestyle of local community, over extraction of resources by increased population, pollution,waste dumping, eutrophication and pesticide farming. There are three important wetlands in the Puducherry region namely Oussudu, Bahour and Kaliveli that provide important resources for local communities and also are a home to tens of thousands of migratory birds that visit the Puducherry region in winter. These wetlands have been acknowledged as Important Bird Areas(IBAs) by IBCN, since many of these birds are represented in more than 1% of their global population.
The recent threat on wetlands of Puducherry is more due to the change in life style of local community living around these wetlands. The younger generation is not much dependent on wetland resources, The younger and modern generation has lost the compassion and bonding to the wetland which their forefathers maintained through sustainable livelihood practices. This has resulted in a change in attitude and perception of the community towards unsustainable farming and resource extraction, game hunting, intensive fishing and reclamation, ultimately resulting in shrinking of wetland area and loss of biodiversity at an alarming pace. Local community is leaving the traditional farming practices for more fertilizer and pesticide based farming; fish stock is depleted using invasive Gill nets. Since Puducherry is fast developing region with rapidly growing commercial tourism and industrial establishments, these wetlands are under the threat of reclamation for resort construction and other commercial establishments. Poaching for a sport as well as open selling of birds including the threatened species is common. School drop-out are noticed to get attracted to such practices to make easy money as well as hunting for a sport with peers. With time, they may grow into expert hunters who will depend on poaching as the main source of income for the family. There are many wetland awareness programs organized by Forest Department as well as NGOs targeting school kids and educated community through workshops. School drop-outs are often not specially targeted by any of such programs and often not brought under the ambit of such programs. This gap needs to be addressed for local conservation efforts to be fully effective. We have chosen birds as the umbrella species whose conservation will in turn protect the lake and biodiversity as a whole. Birds are attractive and beautiful; ,which may easily get compassion from drop-out kids if guided appropriately. With proper efforts, the poachers can be turned to protectors and expert tour guides to facilitate ecotourism.

The A&S ISO CAB pictured here is exemplary of our engineered solution for speaker sound isolation. The case is a double walled case with a sprayed in barrier between the walls. It has a convex wall with egg crate foam on both sides to prevent sound bounce back to the microphone. A pass through for cable couplers is provided to pass the inbound signal to the speaker and outbound signal from the microphone. The entire case is built in compliance with the ATA Spec 300 Cat 1 to protect all the gear while in transit.

A Fomapan Action 400 black-and-white film to test the effect a the special Foca filter "Dyma" produced in France in the 50's.
The filter is called "Dyma" due to the presence of neodymium in the glass giving an unusual absorption by bands in the visible spectrum. In particulier blue and yellow color ans more absorbed than the rest of the spectrum. The filter existed in two different versions with the coefficient x2.5 or 3.5. Here the 42mm push-on Foca Dyma filter used is a x 3.5.
As a consequence, I exposed the Foma 400 for 80 ISO using a Minolta Autometer III with a 10° finder for selective measurements privileging the shadow areas. I used my FOCA camera PF2B year 1956 and its normal Oplar lens1:2.8 f=5cm equipped for all the views with the Dyma filter and a Genaco metal shade hood.
Typical settings during the session : 1/100s f/8 to f/11.

After exposure, the film was processed using Adox Adonal (Agfa Rodinal) developer at dilution 1+25, 20°C for 6 min.
The film was then digitalized using a Sony A7 body adapted to a Minolta Auto Bellows III and a Minolta Slide Duplicator using a lens Minolta Bellow Macro Rokkor 50mm f/3.5 at a reproduction ratio of 1:1. The reproduced RAW files obtained were processed in LR prior the the final JPEG editions.
All views of the film are presented in the dedicated album either in the printed framed versions and unframed full-size jpeg.
About the camera and the lens:
The Foca type PF2B (PF for "Petit Format") was constructed in France by the company "Optique & Precision de Levallois" (OPL) starting from 1947. It was manufactured in the Chateaudun OPL factory, route de Jallans, France, in 1956 among a late series of the PF2B. The factory, constructed in 1938, is still at the same place under the name of SAFRAN now producing precision devices for aerospace appliances.
The camera is equipped with the collapsible OPLAR lens (a Tessar formula) 1:2.8 f=5cm. The focal shutter of the PF2B has timing of 1/1000, 1/500, 1/200, 1/100, 1/50 and 1/25s plus the B pose. A slow exposure device below 1/25s could be installed by the aftermarket service and was installed basically for the FOCA PF3 and Foca Universel.

The knitting machine ‘dance’ demanded a different scale and yet the same qualities of repetition, absorption, the isolation of the maker or craftsperson in the confinements of her practice remained. Seeing Nicky knit on the machine was immediately for me a choreography but I was also interested in exploring the dynamics between this repetitive, manual task and the flight of the mind when the body is grounded so.
The knitting machine dance became about departure and return: about the physical tie to the mundi, the world, the task at hand, and the departure of the mind, to the realm of dreams. The ‘thread’ which connected the two worlds was of course the yarn, which Nicky carefully guided down from the yarn guide to the needles to begin knitting.
The yarn would enable the dancer to depart the task, to reach as if blind and roam in the world of thought and daydream. And yet it would pull her back each time to her work, sometimes with a jolt.
Hildegarde de Bingen came to mind, the 12th century visionary, abbess, writer and composer. And yet underneath this otherworldly music there would always be the rhythmic repetitive sound of the knitting machine.
And of course all the while something is being made. And when it is complete does it not contain the dreams of the maker, knitted in to the garment itself, and will it not always carry even a sense of this time of making?
Sadly I knew I would not be in town for Nicky’s exhibition opening and so approached Miriam Nicholls, whom I’d enjoyed collaborating with for the past five years, to work with me as a choreographer and dancer. So together we have worked to create these two pieces, the hand-knitting and the machine-knitting dance, both of which you will see on opening night and the latter, filmed by Shane Mulcahy, throughout the exhibition. Shane has also worked with us to film the knitting machine at work, capturing in the second short film, its anatomy and inherent dance.
Nicky’s first response to what we made was emotional, feeling we’d transformed her daily practice into something beautiful, shown it in a way she had not seen it before. It’s funny because as a performance-maker that was there for me from the beginning, seeing her work. So in a sense making something of it through dance was almost to extend what I saw in order to show her. And this of course was only achieved through working with someone like Miriam who has the ability to interpret through her body what I am describing that I can see in my mind.
I was reminded through this project how artistic collaboration is a process of extending each other’s ideas in a dialogue that transcends language so that perhaps, as TS Eliot put it, ‘the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time’.

WELCOME TO INDONESIAN SAWDUST / WOOD CHIPS FACTORY
Sawdust is one of the wastes that we can get from the sawing process carried out by carpenters.
In general, there are some people who immediately throw away this sawdust, even though if you look at it more broadly, it turns out that this sawdust waste has a lot of benefits.
