Yellowstone is the most seismicaly active area in the west. The earthquakes help maintain the hydrothermal activity by keeping the natural hot water system flowing. Without the earthquakes disturbaing the inner geologic landscape the small fractures and conduits that supply the steam and earth energy might be sealed by the mineral deposits. This mineral flow at Biscuit basin is a collection of bacteria that forms and creates a painter's picture of abscract yellows, browns, whites, muddy reds and greens on the surface. If you touch the water you can feel the heat but don't tast your finger as you could get sick from the germs. These flows are always changes and its a wonderful walk to stroll around even with the not so delightful sulfer fumes that float in the air. One of Yellowstones biggest earthquakes happened about fifty years ago near the site of this photo. It caused a mountain to collapes and killed 28 in the landslide. The quake of 59 was measured at 7.5 and caused new geysers to burst and rise over one hundred feet. Its a great park for earth scientists, hydrologists, wildlife lovers and is truely one of nature's masterpieces.
