The Great Horned Owl is one of the America's largest and most common owls. That being said, my first encounter with one of these regal bird was only a few years ago. This encounter was special, however. We first noted him sitting atop a telephone pole near the banks of Kissimmee Lake. We decided to play a few calls and within minutes he swooped down to a nearby fencepost very close to me. Having once had a barred owl answer my call, I wanted to see if I could elucidate a similar response. Using a similar cadence of three short hoots followed by two longer I was enthralled when he turned with his powerful legs and talons to face me directly and came closer. I hooted back and he, intrigued, came even closer. He leaned forward and belted out another series of hoots. Our exchange of hoots went on for what seemed like an eternity, with this magnificent bird eventually no more than about 10 feet from me, We stood toe to toe, our eyes locked while in conversation. What I would have given to know exactly what he was thinking. Eventually, he flew off. Despite his size and 4 foot wingspan his flight was as silent as the evening sun. The soft feathers of the Great Horned Owl endow them with the ability to fly without making much of any noise. It's a distinct advantage when chasing prey. This was an evening of silent flight and noisy avian conversation that I will remember fondly for a long time to come. #GreatHornedOwl #HandHeld600mm

Welcome to Galactic Park

Taken during instrument calibration, this image helped test Webb's ability to dig up galactic "fossils." Ancient galaxies are so far that as space expands, their light has stretched into infrared wavelengths — Webb's specialty.

Did that large spiral galaxy towards the bottom of the image catch your eye? Named LEDA 2046648, it’s a little over a billion light-years from Earth and located in the constellation Hercules.

Using images such as this one, scientists can compare galactic “dinosaurs” with modern galaxies. In turn, this helps us learn more about how galaxies evolve — making Webb the ultimate space paleontologist.

Image description: A crowded field of galaxies is interspersed with bright 8-pointed stars on a dark background. The galaxies and stars come in a variety of sizes and colors, ranging from bluish white to orange. Some galaxies are large enough to make out spiral arms, while others look like faint smudges or pinpricks. The most prominent feature is a large, detailed spiral galaxy called LEDA 2046648, seen at an oblique angle towards the bottom of the frame. A smaller spiral galaxy is just below it. About one-quarter the size of its larger companion, this small galaxy looks like a miniature version of LEDA 2046648. Both of these spiral galaxies have glowing cores and areas of star formation lighting up their pale pink arms.

The ability of people to create is one of the most special characteristics that define a human person. This magical creativity inside people has already produced countless beautiful songs, books, poems, films, TV series, theatrical performances, musicals, plays, architecture, and so on. In the same way, art is also a wonderful product of the creative process but unfortunately it doesn't always manifest itself in people in this busy time where expectations and unnecessary pressure are starting to become more normal and polarization has become a kind of sanctuary. Fortunately, artist Ian Kirk Patrick uses his creative mastermind very well to bring people together. Like many others, he was enchanted by the diversity and beauty of the city of Rotterdam and he immediately fell in love with the city. This has resulted in the fabulously beautiful mural on the Kruiskadehof in the heart of the center of this special city. It is a colorful modern work of art that represents Rotterdam and is full of authenticity. The details of the painting are one of a kind. His love for the city is clearly recognizable in the graffiti-like public street artwork and the masterpiece is therefore a feast for the eyes. Rotterdam make it happen!

Taking pictures a tool (camera), not a photographer.

The choice of tool limits the possibilities.

Experience allows him (instrument) less and less to limit their capabilities.

The ability to see is given only when the observer allows ...

The moment of observation is the real find ...

Training and mastering it defies. Training leads to poor imitations of the original.

Often the result should ripen, like wine. Although time is the understanding of the mind, therefore it is very speculative.

The meaning of all this is the process!

Find someone who inspires shooting the camera!

Often we are visited by thoughts that may reveal something unknown ... Our mind many times tries to solve a problem with known methods ... This is its main mistake! The path of the heart opens the doors that appear in our path. It is a pity that not everyone has the courage to insert the keys that are always with us ...

Lakhta. This small village on the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland, about 15 km north-west of the city, is the birthplace of human settlements on the banks of the Neva. It was in the territory of Lakhta that the remains of a man’s camp of three thousand years ago were found.

In official documents, the settlement named Lakhta has been dating since 1500. The name is derived from the Finnish-language word lahti - "bay". It is one of the few settlements that has not changed its name throughout its 500-year history. It is also known as Lahes, Lahes-by, Lahes and was originally inhabited by Izhora. In the last decades of the 15th century, Lakhta was a village (which indicates a significant number of its population) and was the center of the same name of the Grand-Ducal volost, which was part of the Spassko-Gorodensky pogost of Orekhovsky district of Vodskaya Pyatina. In the village there were 10 yards with 20 people (married men). In Lakhta, on average, there were 2 families each, and the total population of the village probably reached 75 people.

From the marks on the fields of the Swedish scribal book of the Spassky Pogost of 1640, it follows that the lands along the lower reaches of the Neva River and part of the coast of the Gulf of Finland, including Lakhta Karelia, Perekulyu (from the Finnish "back village", probably because of its position relative to Lakhta) and Konduya Lakhtinsky, was granted royal charter on January 15, 1638, to the possession of the Stockholm dignitary, General Rickshulz Bernhard Sten von Stenhausen, of Dutch origin. On October 31, 1648, the Swedish government granted these lands to the city of Nuena (Nyenskansu). With the arrival of the Swedes in the Neva region, Lakhta was settled by the Finns, who until the middle of the 20th century constituted the absolute majority of the villagers.

On December 22, 1766, Catherine 2 granted the Lakhta manor, which at that time belonged to the Office of the Chancellery from the buildings of palaces and gardens, "in which and in her villages with yard people 208 souls" to her favorite, Count Orlov. Not later than 1768 Count J.A. Bruce took possession of the estate. In 1788, the Lakhta manor with its wooden services on dry land (high place) and the villages of Lakhta, Dubki, Lisiy Nos and Konnaya, also on dry land, were listed there, in those villages of male peasants 238 souls. On May 1, 1813, Lakhta was taken over by the landlords of the Yakovlevs. On October 5, 1844, Count A. I. Stenbok-Fermor took possession of the Lakhta estate, in which there were then 255 male souls. This genus was the owner of the estate until 1912, when his last representative got into debt and the nobility was established over the estate. On October 4, 1913, the count, in order to pay off his debts, was forced to go into incorporation, and the Lakhta estate became the property of the Lakht Joint-Stock Company of Stenbock-Fermor and Co.

After the revolution, Lakhta was left to itself for some time; on May 19, 1919, in the former estate of the Stenbock-Fermor estate, the Lakhta sightseeing station was opened, which lasted until 1932. In the early 1920s, sand mining began on the Lakhta beaches, and the abandoned and dilapidated peat-bedding plant of the Lakhta estate in 1922 took the Oblzmotdel department under its jurisdiction and launched it after major repairs. In 1963, the village of Lakhta was included in the Zhdanovsky (Primorsky) district of Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

Another day and another memory from my times cross-dressed as a woman. I wrote the other day of my preference for cross-dressing in private. I have only ventured out as a woman in public very rarely. I lack confidence in my ability to look female and this causes me a lot of angst on the few occasions I have been out in public cross-dressed.

One should ‘never say never’ as perhaps my confidence may grow in the future, who knows! At the moment I have to admit the few trips out I’ve had have proved more traumatic than pleasurable. I just could not relax or believe I looked like a woman.

I have tried and failed to develop a female persona and appearance to work in the real world and to be honest, this is an issue I genuinely don’t think I can overcome. I promised my wife and family I would only cross-dress in private so the rare trips out feel like I am betraying their trust. I feel bad as I am not being truthful with them. I had not admitted I was going to step out the door dressed as a woman and trying to pass myself off as a female. This awareness along with my lack of confidence with my cross-dressing abilities is what induces the fear and traumatic experiences. Instead of elation I just feel fearful. In private I have none of that and experience real joy, excitement and pure delight. In public I feel a failure.

So let me explain this picture. I am obviously in a car in a public place. I did in fact venture out soon after this picture. In fact, I recorded two videos of this trip. What is interesting, in the second video I express I am happy about it. I can admit son after the recording my mood went in the opposite direction and the fear kicked in once more.

I was fortunate to be accompanied by a friend on that trip. She was looking out for me and kindly recorded the video and took the stills. I doubt without her being with me I would ever have gone through with what I did.

I did find myself questioning myself. I was not at all sure just why I actually had to go out in public as a woman? I think as cross-dressers many of us are unconsciously steered that direction. There are male to female cross-dressers who are confident and at ease enough to go out in public as a woman. I admire their confidence. Not all of us though have such confidence. It’s interesting that despite my enjoyment of cross-dressing in private I feel like I am a failure because I only dress in private and do not go out in public. I know I shouldn’t feel that but I do. Despite my feelings of failure I am not actually motivated to go out in public as I don’t enjoy the angst and betrayal of trust with my wife and family.

I do enjoy recording the videos as my female self and I think this is probably my best outlet for expressing my female persona. As for this picture, I was very reluctant to get out of the car when the picture was taken. I’m smiling with nervousness and I was feeling incredibly anxious and just wanted to drive away. The two videos are a brief highlight of the whole experience. I wanted to be honest and explain after my final words the whole thing became overwhelming and the happiness I expressed on camera was soon replaced by angst!

courage: the ability to do something that frightens one.

Continuing on with my series featuring Grindelbane students and alumni and their Hogwarts houses, I introduce Dallis MacInnis, a Gryffindor Alumni who now works in St. Mungos’ Grindelbane Academy Wing, caring for students who were once in the same position she was in. The youngest child and only daughter of Carianne and Thomas MacInnis, Dallis was born and raised in the lush country of Scotland where she and her seven… yes seven brothers never had a dull moment venturing through the wilds of their beloved home. With family traditions that included wrangling the Loch Ness Kelpie, the MacInnis family were a tight knit bunch… but with all that family bonding easily comes a feeling of being overwhelmed. After graduating Grindelbane Academy’s Healer Apprenticeship at 19, Dallis and a friend left home and ventured through the European Wizarding World. The pair became animagus together, Dallis taking the form of a red Fennic Fox, and used these animal forms on their journey. After a traumatic run in with a less than legal Wixen Circus, Dallis returned back to her roots in Fledge Rock and took on a job as a healer at the hospital. She lost her hand in a splinching accident but was lucky enough to get a prosthetic made to replace the lost appendage. Dallis is known for being a friendly and bubbly person who is always there with exactly what you need, whether that be a shoulder to cry on, a snack, medical care, or anything in between. She lives in an old converted van next to a pond of Mermish she’s somehow befriended and loves getting visitors both familiar and stranger.

Before and After

Alter Ego: Emoji

Name: Camellia Teal

Powers: Emotion Manipulation (ability to control the emotions of those around her)

Weakness: Pain (stops her powers temporarily)

Weapons: None

Backstory: Growing up with Magic Elf parents in the modern world is never easy, Camellia had it rough trying to control her powers of 'Emotion Manipulation' she was an outcast in society like her mother 'Wail' she was branded a "witch" by her neighbours and bullied as a child for being a "freak". However after being found by the government 'V.I.P.' She found other people with abilities just like her. She was pushed to join a team of "young beings" to feel accepted by society and use her powers for good. After being nicknamed "Emoji" because of her being able to pass emotions to living things using her unique 'emotion manipulation' magic powers.

Emoji is accepted by her fellow teammates and fits in well, however she's still a novice in using her powers and sometimes cannot control them. This sometimes makes Emoji a threat to her own teammates and also makes her an untrusted member because of her lack of control with her abilities in battle, although her boyfriend 'Grim' cheers her up.

Green plants have the ability to make their own food. They do this through a process called photosynthesis, which uses a green pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll’s job in a plant is to absorb light—usually sunlight. The energy absorbed from light is transferred to two kinds of energy-storing molecules. Through photosynthesis, the plant uses the stored energy to convert carbon dioxide (absorbed from the air) and water into glucose, a type of sugar. Plants use glucose together with nutrients taken from the soil to make new leaves and other plant parts. The process of photosynthesis produces oxygen, which is released by the plant into the air.

Chlorophyll gives plants their green color because it does not absorb the green wavelengths of white light. That particular light wavelength is reflected from the plant, so it appears green.

One of the advantages of modern phones is the ability to download applications.

One such app is the Stagecoach bus tracker.

This enables one to track specific vehicles via live information, providing the journey details have been entered into the ticket machine.

To this end I determined that 47617, the first Lillyhall based Solo to receive the new livery, was operating the Keswick - Seatoller 78 service.

Lockdown meant that there was no way I could get to phot' it in the fabulous sunlit scenery of The Lakes but I was able to formulate a salvage mission.

With a reduced service meaning that one bus worked the day's entire diagram it was possible to determine what time it would return to the depot at the end of its shift by referencing the duty sheet of the driver who was working its last run. I was able to do this using a second app' rolled out for Stagecoach employees by the company.

Returning to the depot 47617 would pass within a mile or two of my house and so I would be able to plan my daily exercise to allow me to intercept it on the A595 at Winscales.

An extra bonus was that the driver did not sign out of the ticket machine in Keswick, choosing to wait until his return to Lillyhall, meaning that I could actively track it and set off on my bike at exactly the right time.

Bingo!

I understand that the manufacturer who supplies the fleetname transfers is currently closed.

Two weeks into the UK’s stay at home Coronavirus prevention policy I am realising the plans I had to move my female activities to a new level are now going to be suspended. It has literally taken me years to gain even a small amount of confidence in my ability to create an illusion of being female. In my heart I yearn to look feminine and pass as a woman. I have never had the self belief I can even come close to such a dream. I have, in the last few months, managed to start building a foundation of confidence that made me determined to venture out in public as a woman.

It is ironic really that just as I mange to establish that confidence it is no longer advisable to venture out! I totally believe that the only way to limit the spread of Coronavirus is stay at home and avoid contact to minimise any transmission of the virus from person to person.

I am grateful I managed a bit of time to cross-dress as a woman just before the seriousness of the virus finally sank in and that we all really need to take drastic precautions. My memories of the recent dressing opportunities are still strong and I am still experiencing euphoria. I know this delight will remain with me for many months.

During my last cross-dressing session I felt a new ease building within me which strengthened my resolve that I do need to experience time out in the world as a woman. I know on some deep emotional level I now truly need and desire this outlet in my life. I need to be a woman existing in the world around me. I am not talking about transition, more I just need have opportunities to set free and express this part of myself.

I recorded quite a few videos recently as I had a real need to actually say what I was feeling out loud and being alone with my transvestism the camera is my outlet for this. Do not worry, I know how rubbish my videos are so I won’t be inflicting a huge raft of them onto my photo stream. It is more the moment of recording I gain fulfilment from. Sitting in front of the camera as a woman is just so amazing an experience for me personally that I can barely contain my joy and excitement, and so I literally talk in a stream of consciousness manner! I can recommend it if you too feel you need an outlet and are alone with your desire to appear as a woman.

This picture captures me in a way I enjoy being. I dream of being female, being feminine and try to imagine I am a woman. I can only get close to my dream by wearing wigs, make-up and female clothing. I acknowledge I am deluding myself and indulging in a fantasy but it is undeniably rewarding on many levels.

I will admit I feel more at ease appearing as I do this in picture, everything feels so right. I genuinely feel more confident wearing a dress and always find wearing make-up really boosts my confidence considerably. Losing myself in my dream of being female is always wonderful and though I do eventually return to being a man, my time as a woman is always something I treasure.

Star species

Our star species are some of the most interesting birds you may see on your visit to the reserve.

Kingfisher

Spend time in the hides and you may be rewarded with an unforgettable kingfisher encounter. Listen for their shrill, piping calls and then watch for the flash of blue and orange.

Little owl

You may be lucky enough to find one of these compact owls perched in a tree or on a fencepost. They become very active at dusk and you may hear their shrill calls.

Lapwing

Huge numbers of lapwings gather here in winter. If a bird of prey, such as a peregrine, is in the area, they take to the air in a vast wheeling mass.

Golden plover

Look among the black and white of the lapwing flocks for the golden glow of these smart waders. Several thousand spend winter

Tree sparrow

Tree sparrows can be seen at the bird feeding garden alongside the commoner birds. Listen for their short and sharp 'tek' calls as they fly in and out.

Seasonal highlights

Each season brings a different experience at our nature reserves. In spring, the air is filled with birdsong as they compete to establish territories and attract a mate. In summer, look out for young birds making their first venture into the outside world. Autumn brings large movements of migrating birds - some heading south to a warmer climate, others seeking refuge in the UK from the cold Arctic winter. In winter, look out for large flocks of birds gathering to feed, or flying at dusk to form large roosts to keep warm.

Spring

The last of the wintering birds such as goldeneyes can still be seen in March. Listen out for the cuckoo's unmistakable call from April onwards and see the warblers returning for the summer.

Summer

Broods of ducklings paddle around in the shallows and the grasslands are vibrant with butterflies and orchids. Listen for snipe 'drumming' as they fly above the field pools and see dragonflies basking on the paths.

Autumn

Fieldfares and redwings gorge on berries to fatten up for the winter. Thousands of migrating birds use the Dearne Valley as a refuelling point on their long journeys.

Winter

The bird feeding garden is at its busiest at this time of year, with tree sparrows, greenfinches, goldfinches and tits on the feeders. Spectacular flocks of golden plovers and lapwings take to the air, attracting peregrines on the lookout for a meal.

Cycling at Old Moor

The national Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) cycle route runs right past the entrance to RSPB Old Moor. Where in the summer the grasslands are ablaze with butterflies and orchids, and you’ll be able to see newly-hatched ducklings.

Cycling is the best way of viewing all the sites in the valley on gentle gradients with generally good quality paths.

Together with Natural England and The Environment Agency we're promoting a network of improved multi-user sites around the Dearne Valley linking the five RSPB Dearne Valley nature reserves - Old Moor, Wombwell Ings, Gypsy Marsh, Edderthorpe Flash and Bolton Ings.

Staff and volunteers use this flat and well-surfaced route on a regular basis, sometimes with surprising consequences. A roe deer sprang out at one member of staff proving that it's not just the reserves that are great for wildlife in this area!

Around 8 per cent of our visitors travel to the reserve along the TPT. It's great that they can stop off and refresh themselves with a cup of tea, or service their bike with parts from the shop.

We're trialling some health rides for people new to cycling in a partnership with Cycle Touring Club (CTC) and Ground Work Dearne Valley.

Most of my life, I’ve wished for an ability to be invisible. From evading school teacher’s questions, to stealing away at awkward moments of social embarrassment, to covert observations (for educational purposes only mind you).

The most imagined invisibility mechanism was a magic cloak. This not-new idea has probably been around as long as cloaks existed. After-all, cloaks are designed to completely envelope the wearer for protection. What could be better than a cloak of invisibility?

That was the opposite of my thinking upon discovery of the professionally modeled cloak shown in the middle of this composite image. This was, I thought, a cloak to be seen in. A statement piece.

So, I challenged beautiful Cristy to recreate that center image. We also took turns modeling the cloak while a photographer clicked.

It was impossible to create a voluminous fully expanded cloak featured in the commercial model’s image. However, Cristy came very close to the ideal while twirling. See image left. Dizzy me on the right, was best photographed as a statue.

Not invisible – we drew a small crowd of observers. It was fun performing. We made our photographer laugh.

Lesson Learned: Being super-visible in a cloak is easily achievable. Facing truth and good, or not so good, consequences is empowering. However, a desire to be invisible is a symptom of fear and weakness.

Don’t you agree that it is better for us that becoming invisible is not easily achievable?

Cristy posted her solo photo recently on Flickr, and I figured it best to reveal more of the story for context.

I’m fortunate for Cristy’s companionship. She enjoys photo experiences as performance art and willingly goes along with creative ideas. That she is smart and pretty are big bonuses.

Enjoy!

One of the amazingly colourful Marine Iguanas from Suarez Point on Espanola

Marine Iguana

The Marine Iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is an iguana found only on the Galapagos Islands that has the ability, unique among modern lizards, to live and forage in the sea. It has spread to all the islands in the archipelago, and is sometimes called the Galapagos Marine Iguana. It mainly lives on the rocky Galapagos shore, but can also be spotted in marshes and mangrove beaches. On his visit to the islands, Charles Darwin was revolted by the animals' appearance, writing “The black Lava rocks on the beach are frequented by large (2-3 ft), disgusting clumsy Lizards. They are as black as the porous rocks over which they crawl & seek their prey from the Sea. I call them 'imps of darkness'. They assuredly well become the land they inhabit.” In fact, Amblyrhynchus cristatus is not always black; the young have a lighter coloured dorsal stripe, and some adult specimens are grey. The reason for the sombre tones is that the species must rapidly absorb heat to minimize the period of lethargy after emerging from the water. They feed almost exclusively on marine algae, expelling the excess salt from nasal glands while basking in the sun, and the coating of salt can make their faces appear white. In adult males, coloration varies with the season. Breeding-season adult males on the southern islands are the most colorful and will acquire reddish and teal-green colors, while on Santa Cruz they are brick red and black, and on Fernandina they are brick red and dull greenish. Another difference between the iguanas is size, which is different depending on the island the individual iguana inhabits. The iguanas living on the islands of Fernandina and Isabela (named for the famous rulers of Spain) are the largest found anywhere in the Galápagos. On the other end of the spectrum, the smallest iguanas are found on the island on Genovesa. Adult males are approximately 1.3 m long, females 0.6 m, males weigh up to 1.5 kg. On land, the marine iguana is rather a clumsy animal, but in the water it is a graceful swimmer, using its powerful tail to propel itself. As an exothermic animal, the marine iguana can spend only a limited time in the cold sea, where it dives for algae. However, by swimming only in the shallow waters around the island they are able to survive single dives of up to half an hour at depths of more than 15 m. After these dives, they return to their territory to bask in the sun and warm up again. When cold, the iguana is unable to move effectively, making them vulnerable to predation, so they become highly aggressive before heating up (since they are unable to run away they try to bite attackers in this state). During the breeding season, males become highly territorial. The males assemble large groups of females to mate with, and guard them against other male iguanas. However, at other times the species is only aggressive when cold. Marine iguanas have also been found to change their size to adapt to varying food conditions. During El Niño conditions when the algae that the iguanas feed on was scarce for a period of two years, some were found to decrease their length by as much as 20%. When food conditions returned to normal, the iguanas returned to their pre-famine size. It is speculated that the bones of the iguanas actually shorten as a shrinkage of connective tissue could only account for a 10% length change. Researchers theorize that land and marine iguanas evolved from a common ancestor since arriving on the islands from South America, presumably by driftwood. It is thought that the ancestral species inhabited a part of the volcanic archipelago that is now submerged. A second school of thought holds that the Marine iguana may have evolved from a now extinct family of seagoing reptiles. Its generic name, Amblyrhynchus, is a combination of two Greek words, Ambly- from Amblus meaning "blunt" and rhynchus meaning "snout". Its specific name is the Latin word cristatus meaning "crested," and refers to the low crest of spines along the animal's back. Amblyrhynchus is a monotypic genus in that Amblyrhynchus cristatus is the only species which belongs to it at this point in time. This species is completely protected under the laws of Ecuador. El Niño effects cause periodic declines in population, with high mortality, and the marine iguana is threatened by predation by exotic species. The total population size is unknown, but is, according to IUCN, at least 50,000, and estimates from the Charles Darwin Research Station are in the hundreds of thousands. The marine iguanas have not evolved to combat newer predators. Therefore, cats and dogs eat both the young iguanas and dogs will kill adults due to the iguanas' slow reflex times and tameness. Dogs are especially common around human settlements and can cause tremendous predation. Cats are also common in towns, but they also occur in numbers in remote areas where they take a toll on iguanas.

Espanola (Suarez Point)

Approximately a 10-12 hour trip from Santa Cruz, Española is the oldest and the southernmost island in the chain. The trip across open waters can be quite rough especially during August and September. Española's remote location helped make it a unique jewel with a large number of endemic creatures. Secluded from the other islands, wildlife on Española adapted to the island's environment and natural resources. The subspecies of Marine iguana from Española are the only ones that change color during breeding season. Normally, marine iguanas are black in color, a camouflage, making it difficult for predators to differentiate between the iguanas and the black lava rocks where they live. On Española adult marine iguanas are brightly colored with a reddish tint except during mating season when their color changes to more of a greenish shade. The Hood Mockingbird is also endemic to the island. These brazen birds have no fear of man and frequently land on visitors heads and shoulders searching for food. The Hood Mockingbird is slightly larger than other mockingbirds found in the Galapagos; its beak is longer and has a more curved shape. The Hood Mockingbird is the only carnivorous one of the species feeding on a variety of insects, turtle hatchlings and sea lion placentas. Wildlife is the highlight of Española and the star of the show is the waved albatross. The island's steep cliffs serve as the perfect runways for these large birds which take off for their ocean feeding grounds near the mainland of Ecuador and Peru abandoning the island between January and March. Known as endemic to the island, Española is the waved albatross's only nesting place. Each April the males return to Española followed shortly thereafter by the females. Mating for life, their ritual begins with the male's annual dance to re-attract his mate. The performance can take up to 5 days consisting of a series of strutting, honking, and beak fencing. Once the pair is reacquainted they produce a single egg and share the responsibility of incubation. The colony remains based on Española until December when the chick is fully grown. By January most of the colony leaves the island to fish along the Humboldt Current. Young albatross do not return to Española until their 4th or 5th year when they return to seek a mate. Geographically Española is a classic example of a shield volcano, created from a single caldera in the center of the island. Over the years as the island has moved further away from the hot spot, the volcano became extinct and erosion began to occur. Española's two visitor sites offer an exceptional island visit. Punta Suarez is one of the highlights of the Galapagos Islands. The variety and quantity of wildlife assures a memorable visit. Visitors find migrant, resident, and endemic wildlife including brightly colored Marine Iguanas, Española Lava Lizards, Hood Mockingbirds, Swallow Tailed Gulls, Blue Footed and Masked Boobies, Galapagos Hawks, a selection of Finch, and the Waved Albatross.Found on the western tip of Española, Punta Suarez offers great wildlife such as sea lions, sea birds and the largest marine iguanas of Galapagos. This is one of the best sites in the Galapagos. The amount of wildlife is overwhelming. Along the beach there are many sea lions and large, colorful lava lizards and marine iguanas. As you follow the trail to the cliff's edge masked boobies can be found nesting among the rock formations. After a short walk down to a beach and back up the other side blue-footed boobies are seen nesting just off the trail. The Galapagos Dove and very friendly Hood Mockingbird are commonly found in this area. The nearby bushes are frequently home to the large-cactus finch, warbler finch, small-ground finch and large-billed flycatcher. Continuing down the trail you come to the only place where waved albatross nest in the islands. Some 12,000 pairs nest on Española each year. The feeling is very dramatic and it seems like a desolate wilderness as the waves crash on the jagged cliffs below and the blowhole shoots water 50-70 feet/15-30 meters into the air. The sky above is full of sea birds including red-billed tropicbirds, American Oystercatchers, swallow-tailed gulls, and Audubon's Shearwaters.

Galapagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands (official name: Archipiélago de Colón; other Spanish names: Islas de Colón or Islas Galápagos) are an archipelago of volcanic islands distributed around the equator in the Pacific Ocean, some 900 km west of Ecuador. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site: wildlife is its most notable feature. Because of the only very recent arrival of man the majority of the wildlife has no fear of humans and will allow visitors to walk right up them, often having to step over Iguanas or Sea Lions. The Galápagos islands and its surrounding waters are part of a province, a national park, and a biological marine reserve. The principal language on the islands is Spanish. The islands have a population of around 40,000, which is a 40-fold expansion in 50 years. The islands are geologically young and famed for their vast number of endemic species, which were studied by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. His observations and collections contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.

Arctic Fox [Vulpes lagopus]

Hornstrandir, Westfjords, North West Iceland

____________________________________________________

In the northern hemisphere there are a number of species that can change colour during the year to better blend into their environment. Having the ability to moult and grow a new coat, whether fur or feathers, provides those species that can turn white during the winter months a much better chance of survival in snow-covered terrain. The Ptarmigan is probably the best example when it comes to birds, as they go through a complete seasonal change from earthy tones to pure white, which helps avoid detection from predators. And similarly with some animals who need to be camouflaged in order to both live and hunt in adverse wintery conditions. In this respect, the Arctic Fox is often cited as a species that turns white in winter and, whilst that's true in most cases, it's not the full story as there are actually two distinct colour forms known as the 'white morph' and the 'blue morph'.

Across its range, the 'white morph' is by far the more common form of the Arctic Fox and indeed, these animals do have a pure white coat in winter. However, the 'blue morph' variety, whose coat is actually various shades of brown, is predominantly a coastal species that spends much of its time scavenging amongst rocks and, unlike the white form that moults its thick winter coat to greyish-brown with cream underparts in the summer, these true 'blue' foxes maintain their base colour throughout the year. Admittedly, the coat is much thicker in winter which, particularly when wet, makes it look darker than it does during the summer months when it's shorter and bleached by the sun, but effectively it's the same colour.

The term 'blue morph' comes from the genetics table rather than a true description of the colour, although it's not unusual to see the winter coat described as bluish-brown. The actual colour is determined by the genes of the parents and although the 'white morph' form of the species needs a particular gene from both parents, only one of the dominant genes is enough for the 'blue' colour to be expressed. The depth of colour varies greatly from very dark-brown, through shades of red-brown, mud-brown to dark-grey, and occasionally silver-grey. Colour variation coupled with any other markings or peculiarities helps to identify different individuals.

The species is found in various Arctic and tundra habitats with circumpolar distribution across Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia and Russia. Whilst some authors refer to a single species, others recognise four subspecies - the nominate common form and three variants that have isolated populations (Pribilof Islands in Alaska; a couple of islands in the Bering Sea; Greenland and Iceland). When fully described the latter is known as the Iceland Arctic Fox [Vulpes lagopus, ssp.fuliginosus].

In the east of Iceland, the 'white morph' and 'blue morph' forms have roughly equal distribution, but as you move further west the 'blue morph' becomes more common, particularly so in the Westfjords region. The population on Hornstrandir is predominantly the 'blue morph' variety as their main food source is along the coast.

Like many canids across the world, Arctic Foxes are hunted either for their fur or because they're considered a threat to livestock. Sadly, the situation in Iceland is no different, often supported by statements such as "in most countries, the Arctic Fox is an endangered species, but in Iceland, they thrive in such numbers that it's necessary to regulate them to keep them from decimating the local wild bird population".

Fortunately, Hornstrandir is a designated nature reserve where hunting has been banned. It's a large land mass of around 220 sq.miles , which hasn't seen permanent human habitation since the 1950's. However, a few houses and old farmsteads remain, and it was it was in one of these isolated locations where I stayed for a few days at the end of March with a very small group of wildlife photographers to spend time trying to find these supposedly elusive little foxes. There are no roads on Hornstranir, so access is only possible by boat with a beach landing but, once you're safely there, it's just you and nature.

The weather in this remote area of the world can be very unpredictable, ranging from clear blue skies and sunshine to sleet, snow, and bitterly cold wind gusts and, being northern Iceland, these conditions can change almost from one minute to the next. But this is where the Arctic Fox lives and if you want to appreciate how they survive you may have to suffer a bit!

We were there four days, which I think was long enough, as we had plenty of time to observe the five or six foxes that have made this part of Hornstrandir their home and, over the coming couple of weeks or so, I'll be sharing quite a few photos from the trip together with some additional information.

SN/NC: Rhododendron, Ericaceae Family

Big or small, Rhododendrons can give punch to your landscape with their glorious flowers in spring. They are more than 1000 species giving color and gaiety to the spring season.

Rhododendrons are the beautiful large bushes that flower with pom-pom like blooms during the spring. Rhododendrons are shrubs of the genus Rhododendron, which is in the heath family (family Ericaceae) which includes heathers, Kalmia (mountain laurels), blueberries and cranberries. They have been popular for years and years and will continue to be because of their hardiness, ability to grow very large, and blooming capacity. They require an acid soil though.

Rhododendrons and Azaleas are related but the one difference is that in most cases the Rhododendron is an evergreen and will not lose its leaves in the winter while the azalea does. The name derives from the Greek which means rose tree. Rhododendrons are larger than Azaleas having the ability to grow to up to 80 feet in height and their blooms are much larger. Rhododendrons have a lance shaped leathery leaf while Azaleas have smaller, softer leaves. They do love the shade and have shallow roots. It is a fact that you can discover 16 synonyms, antonyms, idiomatic expressions, and related words for rhododendron, like dogwood, conifer, rhododendrons, shrub, azalea, azaleas, gunnera, winter-flowering, clematis and Vireya.

Fast and well made with the ability to fly long distances, North American Aviation’s P-51 Mustang is undoubtedly one of the world’s most successful and recognizable combat aircraft ever made. Bombing missions over the skies of Europe were taking heavy losses from Luftwaffe fighters. The allied aircrews desperately needed an escort fighter to accompany the bombers deep into enemy territory and back to base on every mission. The P-51 Mustang was the immediate choice.

Within a very short period, the bomber crews affectionately nicknamed the P-51 their “Little Friends.” The P-51B and C models were the first fighters to escort the Allied bombers back to Germany. The P-51 Mustangs and the pilots who flew them saved countless lives in the skies and on the ground and perhaps turned the tide of the war.

After WWII, the USAAF consolidated many of its fighter aircraft. Most piston-powered fighters served substantially reduced roles as more advanced jet-powered aircraft emerged. The Mustang still proved very useful, however, serving in the Korean War and state-side in the Air Force Reserves and National Air Guard.

TF-51D Mustangs (two-seat trainers) were used to train fighter pilots until the jet trainers, such as the T-33 Shooting Star, were fully utilized. The Foundation’s TF-51D is one of only three original TF-51Ds remaining in the world. This fighter was painted in its original markings as a West Virginia Air Guard, 167th Fighter Squadron P-51 called "Toulouse Nuts."

www.youtube.com/channel/UCkNYo1uLNy67xCfeyc1h-ZQ?sub_conf... The purpose of creating and assigning 5G networks

Previous generation mobile communication networks had the following purposes and functionality:

1G: Analog Voice Service

2G: Voice over digital network services, low speed data services (GPRS, EDGE)

3G: High-speed data services (HSPA), with the ability to transmit voice over IP, mobile Internet access MBB (Mobile Broadband).

4G: LTE, LTE-A Mobile Broadband MBB, Voice over Voice (VoLTE)

5G networks greatly expand the limited functionality of previous generation mobile networks. The main functional features of 5G networks are as follows:

EMBB Advanced Mobile Broadband (enhanced MBB)

Ultra-Low Latency Reliable Communication (ULLRC) Massive IoT / IIoT, mMTC (massive Machine Type Communication)

Based on these three generalized types of functionality, the whole variety of services and capabilities of IMT2020 (5G) networks is built, the most characteristic of which are shown in the figure below:

The variety of functional capabilities of IMT2020 / 5G networks. Source: Emerging Trends in 5G / IMT2020, 2016, ITU

Gigabytes per second. 5G networks can significantly increase the speed of data transmission through various radio access technologies (RAT), and by using the new 5G NR radio frequency spectra (New Radio). The user gets almost unlimited bandwidth, both for home use of various services, and for the purposes of enterprises (Immersive Telepresence, Industrial IoT, etc.)

Smart House. A wide range of different Internet of Things (IoT) services will be available for the Smart Home and Smart Building solutions: video surveillance, control and automation of household appliances, security systems management, content storage, climate control, etc.

Smart city. The Smart City solution is a horizontal and vertical scaling of the functionality and range of Smart Home services. Main services of Smart City: Safe City, e-Government e-Government, e-Health e-Health, e-Education e-Education, e-Banking e-banking, Smart Meters utilities electronic collection, Smart Grid smart grids, etc. .

New 4K / 8K video services: Volumetric video, ultra-high definition (UHD) screen, presence effect option.

Work in the cloud. The service makes it possible not only to store data in a cloud storage and retrieve it from there, but also to use application programs that work directly from the cloud. Moreover, with the possibility of them but also use applications that work directly from the cloud. Moreover, with the possibility of them

use on any device and from any location. In addition, it is possible to use APIs through which cloud service providers can provide their services to subscribers of a 5G network operator.

Augmented and virtual reality (AR / VR). The virtual reality service VR (Virtual Reality) immerses a person in another world, influencing his senses, especially his vision (VR glasses). Augmented Reality AR (Augmented Reality) service combines a real environment for a user with virtual objects. These services are suitable not only for entertainment, games, virtual communication in the "telepresence" mode, but can also significantly improve the learning process, when students using VR glasses can, for example, visually see the internal structure of a person at a lecture on anatomy, a master in the workshop can study the assembly order of a complex unit, etc.

Industrial Automation. The 5G network, coupled with the technology of the Internet of things IoT, with the help of industrial sensors IIoT (Industrial Internet of things), as well as with the help of artificial intelligence, AI (AI, Artificial Intelligence) can significantly increase the degree of automation of production. At the same time, it becomes possible in real time to analyze large volumes of heterogeneous data (Big Data) both based on the findings (insights) and using machine and deep learning (Machine learning, Deep learning).

Business Critical Applications These applications may include, for example, electronic medicine (e-Health), emergency communications (Mission Critical Communication), tactile Internet (Tactile Internet) and others.

Unmanned vehicles (Driverless Vehicles). Unmanned transport can act as part of the Smart City service, however, it can be provided on its own platform. It includes not only unmanned vehicles (driverless cars), but also unmanned tractors for “smart agriculture” (Smart Agriculture), unmanned trains for the metro and suburban railways, drones and other types of public and special transport. In addition, on the 5G platform, the implementation of ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) driver assistance systems is possible.

It should be emphasized that the figure above shows only some of the services and solutions of the 5G platform. Unlike the networks of previous generations, the range of services of which was strictly limited and somewhat expanded in 4G, the services of the 5G platform are synergistic and scalable, and are not limited to once defined functionality. In fact, 5G plays the role of a platform for the development of new services and DevOps applications, when new functions are created by developers (Development) in close coordination with the teams who are responsible for their implementation and operation (Operation).

In general, we can say that the 5G network incorporates not only mobile, but also fixed communication services, as well as high-speed Internet access with low latency and, in addition, specialized and corporate networks for vertical industries.

5G / IMT2020 platform versatility

Due to the fifth generation networks, it will also be possible to improve the quality of the use of existing services where large volumes of traffic are involved.

Theodore Sizer, vice president of wireless technology at Bell Labs, noted that there will be a wide variety of devices running on 5G networks. Smartphones and tablets will not go anywhere, but besides them, a whole “zoo” of various devices will appear on the network, including CCTV cameras, weather sensors, sensors of “smart” electric networks, “smart” houses and cars.

Ericsson said that 5G will usher in the long-term development of the Networked Society:

South Korean operator SK Telecom, one of the first companies to demonstrate 5G technology in action, at the initial stage of deployment of new generation networks focuses on ordinary users as the main consumers of services, company representatives told TAdviser in February 2016. Thanks to 5G, users can watch 3D-TV without glasses, download in seconds or watch UltraHD video online at high speed.

It will also be possible to use virtual and augmented reality applications at a new level, according to SK Telecom. For example, include elements of augmented reality in the educational process, creating virtual museums and models of the universe in the classrooms.

In the projects of “smart cities” 5G will allow real-time transmission of information from a much larger number of sensors at various objects. Qualcomm's senior director of product management for mobile technology, Sanjeev Athalye, notes that it will be possible to deploy a thousand sensors instead of a hundred, for servicing which there will be a sufficiently smaller number of base stations than with existing networks. These can be, for example, sensors for monitoring the state of housing and communal services objects, sensors for “smart lighting” or sound sensors installed for safety and order in the city. In the latter case, the sensors can detect suspicious or too loud sounds, and this information will be automatically transmitted to law enforcement.

New services using 5G can also be implemented in medicine. For example, to organize remote monitoring of patients. The doctor will be able to quickly receive information from special sensors and monitor the condition of patients around the clock.

Thanks to its very low latency, 5G will also open up more possibilities for remote operations using the robot. Such a service is especially relevant for small settlements where there are no surgeons in the field: controlling the manipulations of the robot, the operation can be performed by a specialist located in a completely different place. Due to 5G, such a service can be deployed in wireless networks.

The low data latency that next-generation networks can provide is also important for the deployment of smart power networks. Using sensors will allow you to instantly detect damage on the power line and block the spread of the consequences of damage further along the line. Thus, damage will affect fewer consumers of electricity.

In large manufacturing companies, in retail, logistics, 5G will make it possible to use more industrial robots that perform various functions instead of people and drones. The latter are already used in some industries, but are most often managed using Wi-Fi networks. 5G will allow you to cover a greater distance than Wi-Fi networks, and due to the low latency - increase the stability of such systems. For example, Amazon has a project to deploy a system for delivering goods using drones.

An example of services for which 5G will have an advantage is urban surveillance systems. 5G will help simplify their deployment and use. Now traffic from thousands of cameras in cities is mainly transmitted via fixed networks. To deploy such an infrastructure is not an easy task, since it is necessary to lay many wires. With 5G, you can receive terabytes of high-quality video

permissions without the use of wires.

Another example is a vehicle monitoring service in companies. Qualcomm’s Sanjeev Atali believes that with the advent of a new generation of networks, operators who provide such a service will be able to reduce its cost. This will be possible due to the fact that the cost of one 5G base station will be lower than the cost of stations for existing networks, and also due to the fact that one base station can simultaneously serve more devices, respectively, less base stations will be required for the service.

Often we are visited by thoughts that may reveal something unknown ... Our mind many times tries to solve a problem with known methods ... This is its main mistake! (Listenwave- 圣彼得堡). #Lakhta. #Listenvawe #Light.

Chandra's unique ability to precisely locate and resolve individual X-ray sources in 12 globular clusters in our Galaxy has given astronomers a crucial clue as to the origin of these sources. Two clusters, known as NGC 6266 (or M62) and NGC 7099 (or M30), are shown here in this 2003 image.

A globular cluster is a spherical collection of hundreds of thousands and even millions of stars buzzing around each other in a gravitationally bound stellar beehive that is about a hundred light years in diameter. The stars in a globular cluster are often only about a tenth of a light year apart. For comparison, the nearest star to the Sun, Proxima Centauri, is 4.2 light years away.

Most of the point-like sources in these images are binary star systems containing a collapsed star, such as a neutron star or a white dwarf star, that is pulling matter off a normal companion star. While direct, head-on collisions between stars are rare even in these crowded circumstances, close encounters occur and can lead to the formation of binary star systems containing a collapsed star.

The images illustrate a general trend observed for globular clusters. Clusters such as M62 where the stars are packed very closely together and the rate of close encounters is high have more X-ray binaries than those such as M30 in which close encounters occur less often. This is strong evidence that the X-ray binaries in globular clusters are formed by close encounters.

How many ways have our lives improved with the ability to instantly review our shots?

Chicago Teachers are on Strike, which is what 94% of the teachers and support staff voted for district wide. I happen to be lucky enough to have worked in this Chicago Public Schools District since 2001 when I became an Occupational Therapist for children with different ability levels. I love my students and I would rather be in school instead of marching outside on the streets. What a lot of people may or may or not know is that according to Illinois State Law, teachers can only strike over pay. So, our new Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot offered a 4% raise per year (16% over 4 years) in hopes that this would be enough.

But, this is not enough. Why? Because us teachers and clinicians are rebels. We don't do this for the money. We do this for the kids. We dare to dream of a world where we don't have to ask for a nurse, a library, and a social worker for all of our schools because in the suburbs, these are all given and more. Why should Chicago students have less? Why should Chicago students suffer with dirty classrooms? Are these good learning conditions? A few years back they tested the water fountains at school for lead and found at least 30% of those tested had lead and so they just stopped testing. And nothing was done about it. Are these good learning conditions? Chicago is plagued by classism and racism that forces many children into unsafe living environments but Lori Lightfoot would rather open up police stations than provide money for schools. Are these good learning conditions when our students come to school with toxic stress syndrome and no social worker is present to help them?

The answer in our hearts is no. And there isn't a law in existence that is going to keep Chicago teachers from fighting. I will fight. I will lose my pay. I will march in the cold. But, I will stand up for these children and it is an honor. They need to see this. They need to see their teachers love them and will fight for them to exist in a better world. To breathe. To be loved. To have a high quality of life. That is what the Chicago Teacher's Union Strike is really all about.

Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) - Gator Creek Road, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida

The approach-ability to Great Blues can vary considerably in Florida where there are some who will approach fishermen looking for a hand-out from the bait bucket, to other birds that will fly off when you get within 100 yards of them. Needless to say this guy was one of the friendlier ones, though it wasn't looking for a hand out, and was determined to catch its own diner.

It's also a little easier to get close to these guys when you stay in your car, and you can keep something (like the bush in the foreground) between you and the heron.

After what seems like an eternity without the ability to travel and meet up with friends, finally an opportunity arose to do that very thing.

This summer Matt Hacker (entropedian) came to visit The Netherlands and stayed at my place for nearly two weeks. During that time we ventured out to various extremities of my country as well as the neighboring Belgium.

We also visited our mutual friend Ralph Savelsberg (mad physicist) in Den Helder for a couple of great days during which Anton Raves also came to join us.
