Abereiddy Tower in the distance and Blue Lagoon, a former slate quarry turned ultimate adventure playground.

The purpose and date of the building are unknown, it appears to be a navigational aid. A building on the site is marked on the old series Ordanance Survey map of 1843-63. It is suggested that this may be a lookout built after the 1798 invasion scare. However, other suggestions include a explosive store for the old quarry below. The tower is now a Grade 2 listed building.

A change of pace. This is a seep in the cliffs at Abereiddy from September.

Abereiddy is famous for its beach and the optimistically named Blue Lagoon. It's a popular spot for coasteering, making it the kind of place I would normally avoid for photography. However, like so much of the Pembrokeshire coast, it also has incredible rock formations that provide limitless subject matter. I spent a few hours here photographing rock abstracts and details. I could happily have stayed longer, except the area I was photographing became over-run with bathers and thrill seekers. Even so, I made two of my favourite images of the trip here within a few feet of each other. Which I suppose just goes to show there's always a photograph to be made if you have a mind to.

Taken on the evening of the summer solstice, above Abereiddy looking towards Trwyncastell and the Abereiddy Tower. Not a bad spot to spend the longest day.

Part of the Pembrokeshire coastal path.

Sorry...but this is an archive shot saved from my last photostream and l've got a cold and can't be arsed to go out in this cold and miserable weather.

I'm no geologist, but I find the subject absolutely fascinating photographically. Scientists tell us time is relative. You can get a sense of that standing in a place like this. These rocks, which seem so solid and immovable, are in reality in constant motion. Their twists and turns, invisible to us from our limited human perspective, are written in their striations for all to see. Millions of years of geological time suspended in living rock.

I made several close-up studies of these rocks but also this wider view to include the presence of water, one of the main agents of geological change. Nothing was moving when I made my exposures, which meant I could employ focus stacking to maximise the apparent depth of field. But appearances can be deceptive. In many ways, this image is all about movement. I composed it to emphasise the dynamic flowing lines of rock, with the small pool providing a point of stillness where the eye can come to rest.

Pembrokeshire coastal path Abereiddy Wales - This fine creature kept me company on the coastal path for a good hour and treated me to a fantastic show of its flight skills. It was chasing other birds from the cliffside, mainly pigeons, and was seen to make a successful hit, before returning to its nest, also on the cliff just below my position.

Captured at Abereiddy beach, situated on the Northern side of the St Davids Peninsula,

Not exactly the Worlds tallest tower, Abereiddy tower is thought to have been built around the late 18th century, It's believed to have been used as a navigational aid and lookout point.

Porthgain harbour, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK

Porthgain and its harbour lie just a few miles north of St David’s, within the Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park‘s Conservation Area.

This small coastal hamlet was once a small commercial harbour, but now attracts visitors from far and wide.

Throughout the 19th Century, Porthgain had rather a chequered industrial history, being known first for its slate, then for brick making and finally for quarrying gravel.

It is now better known for two art galleries, an old smuggler’s pub and the remains of the granite hoppers.

The harbour, breakwater and piers were built in 1851 and served by a horsedrawn tramway from Abereiddy’s slate quarry.

Later, a narrow gauge railway was built to transport rock from the Pen Clegyr and St Bride’s quarries to Porthgain. Finally, in 1931, the road stone business closed.

Captured by the old slate quarry at Abereiddy.

An area known as The Blue Lagoon is directly behind me in this capture, the lagoon was created in the 19th century during the excavation of slate which continued until the early 20th century, It's a wonderful place surrounded with relics from the old industry.

Unfortunately I got my timing wrong to actually capture it though as the sun was directly in shot, so I must return soon to capture it in a better light.

The lagoon is a popular place for water-sport activities these days and was also chosen as one of the red bull cliff diving locations during the 2013 world series, the cliff divers will be returning again this year for the 6th venue of the 2016 series which will be held on the 11th September.
