Contest Announcement
Almost 10 years ago the Lego Star Wars fan site From Brick to Bothans ran the first alphabet starfighter contest. A little over a year ago, my 4 year old son and I started making our own alphabet starfighters inspired by that contest. As a thank you for all the support I've received and to celebrate finishing all 26 letters I'm having my own contest!
To enter all you have to do is build (out of Lego) OR draw your own original spaceship which has a design based on a letter of the alphabet. Post your design online and be sure to include the hashtag #abcstarfightercontest and my handle @davekaleta in the description. I will be reposting all the entries to my Instagram stories (with proper credit of course!) The contest will run from March 18th to May 9th.
Ten random entires will receive a free 1st edition poster of all 26 ships (approximate size 18" x 24") signed and numbered to 100. Additionally, a judging panel made up of my wife, my son and myself will pick the three entries we like best to also receive a free poster. You will need to provide a shipping address in order to be eligible to receive the prize.
Happy creating!
P.S. Teachers (like me) who are looking for ideas are welcome to submit the designs of their students!
This question mark shaped spaceship is part of the continuing alphabet starfighter project I am working on with my 4 year old Star Wars obsessed son. We finished all the letters so now we are on to special characters and numbers.
After finishing the alphabet, I held a poll to see which special character to make next. Question mark won the poll by just two votes over ampersand! The curve is always the hardest part of tackling any of these ships. I pulled out the C-Wing to remind my self of a cool way to accomplish a curve. I used a similar technique of wedge plates to build a curve shape. I knew I had a lot of dark red wedges, so that was the first color. I like the combination of medium azure with dark red, but I don't have very much of that color left so I needed a third color to pull of the work of connecting the angles together - light grey (light bley) does that work for this ship. The connections are made on the outside spine of the ship because of the cockpit placement. While the play features are relatively simple on this ship with a rotating bottom gun turret, I am quite happy with how the ship balances with just two minor landing gear additions. This super fun build was completed in just two sessions on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning - with help from Elliot of course!
If you liked this or any of the other ships be sure to follow along and check out the group starfighter shot for details on the #abcstarfightercontest There are several entries already, but I'd love to see more :)

Now that I finished the alphabet starfighters, I'm tackling some of the special characters and numbers. People kept joking that I should do &, also known as ampersand. I'm sure you thought I wouldn't do it, but here we are! Ampersand is a ligature combination of the cursive letters E and T as et is Latin for "and". In a poll I held to determine the next symbol, ampersand lost out to question mark by two votes - but I built it anyway! I also held a poll for the color scheme. There were so many great suggestions (some will still be used) but Simon Liu had the winner with bright light yellow, dark bley and black!
I had just finished building the new LEGO Fiat and I also had a whole bunch of round quarter 1x1 tiles from the wonderful Dots sets. The main idea was to layer the colors on top of each other to create depth and details. The play features are the rotating weapons and I finally found a color scheme that worked to include the glow in the dark trans 1x2 tiles from set 10217 Diagon Alley! (Elliot was really impressed with glow in the dark Lego)
If you liked this be sure to look at the other ships, follow along, and check out the group starfighter shot for details on the #abcstarfightercontest There are several entries already, but I'd love to see more :)
The demand was too much! After making 26 spaceships people are still asking for more!! So now I'm building special characters and numbers!!!
This was a super fun build because I didn't get to olive green in the first round of ships. I really liked playing with stickers again too!

Remember when we called this "the pound key"? I guess I'm old... The alphabet starfighter series continues! I finished the letters and before I take on the number digits I wanted to try some symbols. I did exclamation point, question mark, ampersand and now we have HASHTAG. Elliot had a bold idea for this ship - changing the shape into a rectangle and opening it up as a play feature. The first step I take with these ships is picking a color scheme and laying out the plates. The last time I sorted I saw teal and bright yellow next to each other and knew that I wanted to try them in a ship. I needed another color to do the "work" of connections and structure so I picked white. Laying out the plates was tricky because of the angled vertical sections. I felt the 12x3 wedge plate was the perfect angle, but I would need three of them stacked to properly form the symbol. Luckily Elliot let me take apart his Kessel Run Millennium Falcon 75212 and I also used the 4x9 wedge plates for the horizontal lines. Because of the angled sections, I wasn't able to make a complete rectangular prism as Elliot requested, but the resulting playfeature opening is still quite cool. I definitely scraped the bottom of the barrel on my teal and bright yellow collection. The tribal like pattern was influenced by the Totem character from Us Two Games Monument Valley
If you liked this or any of the other ships in the series be sure to follow along and join the #abcstarfightercontest I am hosting. There are several entries already here and on Instagram, but I'd love to see more! The contest closes on May 9th. Happy creating!
The B-Wing Starfighter is a new addition to the Classic Space fleet, featuring dual cockpits, antenna arrays, lots of thrust, and some potent blasters. She's not the most maneuverable ship in the galaxy, but she's got it where it spells, kid.
I could not resist entering the hashtag #abcstarfightercontest run by @davekaleta. I hope to get several entries in, if possible, but I had to start with my favorite letter, B, piloted by a blue 1980-something spaceman. This is my first foray into Neo-Classic Space, and I am decently pleased with the results. And I finally finished a spaceship that I liked, which is a plus, after failing for several years.
Had to jump in on the #abcstarfightercontest! I was planning to tackle a more unconventional letter than H, but the large cone elements from the Rexcelsior set seemed to lend themselves well to that shape.
Missile launchers fold out of the wings, and there is also a central turret that folds up and down.
