There was a very nice assortment of ducks at Mill Lake in Abbotsford on a recent visit.

The Canadian Snowbirds flew their nine CT-114 Tutors and delighted crowd at the Abbotsford International Airshow 2010 from Friday to Sunday, Aug 13-15, 2010. Their aerobatics demonstrated the Canadian Forces’ teamwork, skill and professionalism in the air. Officially known as the 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, the Snowbirds was formed in 1978 with roots going back to the Second World War. This year also happens to be the 40th anniversary of this Canadian Air Force squadron with an airbase in CFB Moose Jaw, Sask. The name ‘Snowbirds’ was formally adopted in 1971 after a naming contest was held at an elementary school in CFB Moose Jaw. Though some say that the bane may have something to do with the popular 1970 Anne Murray song with the same name.

2010 also happens to be the 100th centennial of the Canadian Navy, so this year’s Abbotsford Airshow should be big which usually attract 125,000 annually. Other than the Canadian Snowbirds, others that will perform include USAF Thunderbirds, SkyHawks Parachute Team, F-15E Strike Eagle, USAF Heritage Flight F-115E, CF-18 Hornet and many more. Of particular interest is John Mohr who flew his vintage 1943 Stock Stearman PT-17 biplane and did slow roll, snap roll, barrel roll, hammerhead, stall turn and other unique John Mohr moves that only this veteran biplane aerobatic showman can. Just low level, in your face type of routines that are nothing routine about them. Watching on the ground, many in the audience wondered out loud how he did it. What is even more amazing is that the vintage biplane had no special engineering done to it since it rolled out of the assembly line in 1943. All that crazy maneuvering you see up in the air is pure pilot skill. Simply stunning. That’s Mohr Barnstorming!

Driving the roads in the Sumas area of Abbotsford I spotted this bird off to the side of the road. It seemed unconcerned about my vehicle but it was on the passenger side of the truck and I ended up with a very awkward angle to shoot at. Still it is the closest I have gotten to them since I was a kid when a neighbor raised them at a poultry farm.
