Aachen, Germany (2008)

Aachen Cathedral was one of Charlemagne’s grand projects he wanted to create a cathedral that connected heaven to Jerusalem, construction began from 796 until its final consecration in 805.

Charlemagne was laid to rest in the cathedral in 814 and was canonized by Emperor Barbarossa in 1165 beginning a long draw of religious pilgrimages to the Dom.

A legend goes that the people of Aachen halfway through the construction of the Dom ran out of money for further building and they made a deal with the devil for the money to complete the Dom.

The Devil struck a bargain requiring the first to enter the Dom upon its completion to surrender his soul to him, the people of Aachen being a smart bunch upon the cathedral’s completion sent a wolf into the entrance and the devil quickly came for his soul and realizing he had been had the devil stormed out in a fit of rage.

On his way out it is said that he severed his thumb in the mouth of the cast lion head door handles, today you can see a statue of the wolf near the Dom entrance to commemorate the story and if you reach into the lions mouth door handle you can still feel the devils thumb.

Aachen is situated on the German/Belgium/ Netherlands border and is Germanys most western city as well as being one its oldest.

Despite the antiquity of its surroundings Aachen today is also one of the leading centers for science and engineering.

Aachen has a population of 250,000 but over 50,000 students reside in the city going to one of the four major universities making Aachen a favorite among young people and keeping the city young at heart.

Aachen has been used as a prime example of how a European city can modernize while retaining its authentic old charm creating a harmonious balance of protecting the old while welcoming the new.

wintry impression of Aachen

The Cathedral of Charles the Great (Charlemagne), the uprising of Europe. This building is so beautiful. People who come in, standing mostly on the threshold and are marveling at this building. But the most forget, that building is in process over so many time. You will discover many, many elements of Art Nouveau.

Probably no other Dom in Germany has seen more action when it comes to Kings than the Imperial Cathedral or Kaiserdom of Aachen fitting since it is the oldest church in Northern Europe.

The Kaiserdom houses the remains of the first great European unifier come saint Charlemagne and has coronated 30 Kings and Holy Roman Emperors since the 12th century.

Besides its importance to the German nobility it is also a pilgrimage church of the people and chock full of relics that are out for display every seven years when the new cycle of pilgrimage begins, the list of relics include: Christ’s loin cloth from the crucifixion; a cloak of Mary’s; the cloth that shrouded John the Baptists head when he was decapitated and finally the swaddling clothes of Jesus.
