Between picking the grandkids up at their mother's house (near the airport) and getting 1/3 of the way home I noticed that planes were landing on the shorter east-west runway, and not the main runway as had been 20 minutes earlier. Getting home I found out that a light plane had a mechanical issue and had to land with wheels up, closing the first 1/3 of the main runway. Therefore anything larger than a 737 or A321 could not land. Here Qantas A330-303 VH-QPF (QF137 Sydney to Christchurch), the only large aircraft scheduled for several hours has been diverted to Wellington and it passed overhead at 32,000 feet.
It arrived back a couple of hours later when the main runway was re-opened.
