SENAC-RJ: Model Photography Class - 24/08/2019 - Pin Up style.

Model: Jaqueline "Jackie" Marinho

Today's pinup features Erin in this US Army Air Force themed pinup! Erin is decked out in AAF gear including a Crusher Cap, ANB-H-1 Headphones, A-8B Oxygen Mask, and a A-2 Jacket.

This pinup is another 'real pinup photo' that I'm posting occasionally throughout the year to remind those who enjoy my pinup work that every pinup you see starts as a studio taken photograph. The uniforms and equipment are real and the models are really in the studio. I prefer the vintage style processing in the finished product over just having a real studio photograph as it's unique. There's a bazillion pinup photographers out there who shoot and post pinup shots looking crisp, clear, and modern day looking. It's a similar pinup style you can see just about everywhere. That being said, some people might occasionally like a 'real' photo without the vintage effect added to remind them that these are all real models shot in the studio.

SENAC-RJ: Model Photography Class - 24/08/2019 - Pin Up style.

Model: Jaqueline "Jackie" Marinho

Today's airbrushed style pinup photo features Erin in this minimal classic WW2 Army Air Force pinup look. Going back to the roots of the classic 1940's style pinup often featured in magazines such as Esquire or True Magazine, these minimalistic pinups by George Petty and Vargas featured mainly one thing: the pinup. While the gals could have some props like telephones, household items, etc; these pinups were the classic masterpieces that defined the pinup era. These pinups were the source for thousands of nose art paintings on World War 2 aircraft. Here Erin is wearing authentic WW2 bomber crew gear including a B-6 Flight Helmet, ANB-H-1 Headphones, AN6530 Goggles, early A-8B Oxygen Mask, T-30 Throat Mic, early B-3 Mae West Life Jacket, A-2 Flight Jacket, AN6513 Parachute Harness, and early AN6513-1 Parachute Pack. Behind her is a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress.

Today's airbrushed style pinup photo features Stilletta on her first day as a pilot for the Air Transport Command of the US Army Air Forces. Arriving at Station AAF-466 (RAF Membury), Stilletta is ready to tackle the big C-47/C-53 transport aircraft to carry paratroopers and supplies deep into enemy lines. Wearing her trusty A-2 jacket and a 45 gun, she's ready to hop into the cockpit and take the fight closer to Germany!

Chinese American Composite Wing was assigned to the 14th Air Force, China Burma India (CBI) Theatre in World War2.

This a A2 leather flight jacket themed to honor those airmen.

Art jacket to honor Navy Ace, Randy "Duke" Cunningham, of VF-84 "Jolly Rogers".

Cunningham was one of the two pilots who achieved American Ace status in Vietnam.

Yes, i know this should have been done on the back of a Navy G-1 Jacket. This was just a design exercise, if I were to paint it, it would be on a Navy G-1.

A-2 Jackets

1941-1945

"Taking note of some of the strange and wonderful designs that have been etched onto field jackets and fatigues, the War Department has directed that the practice be discontinued immediately."

-War Department, 1944

A symbol of status, a record of accomplishments and a visible expression of pride in your unit, crew and aircraft the A-2 Flying Jacket has been a treasured possession of aviators since its introduction in 1931.

Issued after the completion of flight training the brown leather jackets, often adorned with bright, colorful and frequently risqué unit insignia and affectionately hand-painted depictions of aircraft nose art, served as a public statement of courage, recording the number of missions flown and enemy fighters destroyed.

Although there was standard issue fight gear, there was not a standardized fight suit during World War rather, American airmen mixed and matched the gear they were issued to meet their individual needs and tastes Each airman had the common goal to survive the extreme conditions of flying at high altitudes, so they often wore several layers of clothing. Many American flyers started their layering with a set of coveralls like the A-4 fight suit, which they wore over their regular uniforms. Suits like these were made of a variety of materials like gabardine, cotton khaki, poplin, and Byrd cloth.

Then, on top of the coveralls, flyers wore flight jackets and trousers. The A-2 fight jacket is one of the most recognizable pieces of flight gear from World War II. It was originally made of seal-brown horsehide, but as the war and demand progressed, the color and materials varied. While the A-2 provided the protection needed for high altitude fight during the summer, the B-3 winter flying jacket was used to keep airmen warm during the winter. The B-3 was made of seal-brown sheep shearling, making it much warmer. Finally, airmen wore flying trousers over their uniform and coveralls to protect her lower halves during flights. Like the flying jackets, the trousers were made of leather and lined with wool. It is difficult to imagine flying an aircraft while wearing several layers of clothing, but it was vital to the survival of American airmen during World War II to layer up.

I love fedoras and A-2 military jackets. A-2's were designed for pilots before WWII, and they make perfect driving garments. Driving in the NY metropolitan area can sometimes be like flying a WWII fighter plane ;) Fedoras however do not fit our modern day society; but then neither do I, so we have that in common.
