Industrial Applications

I rented a Tamron 70-300mm F4-5.6 VC lens for this class since the longest I have in my collection only goes to 200mm. I liked the compositions on the camera's view screen, but was terribly disappointed by the quality of the pictures after viewing them on the computer when I got home. It seems like all of the photos were "soft" when out at 300mm. I troubleshooted with higher shutter speeds, monopod, different ISO settings, manual vs. auto focus, and manually selecting the focus point. None of it seemed to solve the problem. The most crisp picture I have is one with full sun on the animal. It seemed like the lens had to "hunt" a lot to achieve focus unless it was a full sun situation. I'm not sure if it's just how all long lenses perform or an issue with this brand. If you've got suggestions,I'd love to hear them.
