zoomsoundlab: Sweet!
Detail from a sound recorder which I use for capturing the kids playing instruments or singing. I can only think they will thank me when they grow up and I share the recordings at an opportune moment ...

Meet my First Acquisition.
Its the Zoom H1 Handy Recorder.
Well Why H1? Well its cheap. But the sound quality aint.
This was actually a Last minute purchase to which my dear friend Meghan Phadke agreed to bring in.
The Mics are in a XY configuration which provide good all round sound capturing capability.
The Shots are taken with the Canon 550D, Canon 55-250mm with Raynox DCR 150 for the detailed shots.
The Lighting is Yongnuo 460MKII 1/32 in a Lumiquest Softbox III while a Vivitar 285HV 1/16 shoot through umbrella camera right. The Lighting system remains the same for the detail shots.
The seamless White is nothing but a simple white card sheet curved.
A small Black card sheet was kept in front of the recorder. If you look at the shot, the recorder is reflective in nature. So without the flag, the white was reflecting back.this exact you can see the two bands below the record button. The black paper helped to eliminate the major reflection below.

The Illinois Railway GP20 runs light, long hood forward, through Ladd, Illinois.
This was one of my planned catches for the day. I had anticipated being able to video it as it left Zearing. But as I drove through Ladd, its headlight surprised me. Returning back to Peru earlier than I had expected. I quickly reversed course and drove to a spot east of town that I had previously checked out.

I just bought a zoom h1 handy recorder for my Canon T2i. So far I've been quite happy with my lav mic plugged directly into my camera for the interviews and promo videos that I did. And with magic lantern I was able to adjust the audio levels manually and turn off the AGC, but my mic levels would always be super low coming in from the mic.
So now I can either plug the lav mic in the zoom h1 or use the h1 on camera for more run-and-gun shoots, like the one I am doing tomorrow.
I put the mic directly on the camera, but I heard a lot of tha handling noise from the camera, so I decided to create this little DIY shock mount with some things that I had lying around.
I used a flash bracket , a little flash mounting ballhead and some rubber bands. That's it. Let's see how it will perform tomorrow.
My new Zoom H1 recorder, nice partner for Nikon D7000.

The QJ steam locomotive, IAIS 6988, pulls a passenger excursion towards Geneseo, Illinois. The Geneseo Chamber of Commerce organized the trains, which carried passengers several times during the day to Annawan, Ilinois and return. An IAIS GP38-2 brings up the rear of the train.

My newest piece of kit for the camera bag... though it doesn't take photos. This is the Zoom H1 digital recorder.
The new Olympus E-5 camera shoots HD video but the built-in microphone is less than optimum. I'm going to use this on the camera with a hot-shoe mount and then sync the audio and video in post-production. And of course, this will work just fine off-camera as well and even when I'm not shooting photos.
This is a 32 second clip from a 12 minute video of this morning's B-29 bomber action at the Dupage County Airport. The "FiFi" currently is the last flying B-29. It's here for the weekend. Giving rides and posing for photos. This morning, it took off as some severe weather was moving into the area. After a bit it returned with some dramatic storm clouds following. An extra H1 recorder, and the D200 back-up body that this image was captured with. The kit needed some inexpensive fleshing out this week.
UP 7867, a single GE AC45CCTE continues west after passing through the coal chute arch in DeKalb, Illinois.
This was the final video after several hot weather hours spent at the coaling tower. I decided to end the video with a view of the coaling tower.
Amtrak's westbound "Carl Sandberg" runs over the crossover at Buda on the Mendota sub while BNSF 4131 holds short.
I don't video Amtrak often, but this one allowed me to get ahead of BNSF 4131 by holding it at Buda. Note that the new signal towers are operational. The old signals are turned sideways awaiting removal of the signal bridges. And Picture-in-Picture seemed a logical way to edit this one.

So look out for sound to come aswell. I will inform you here when things get started on our homepage.
By the way, this ist the Zoom recorder H1 with similar mics like the famous H4.
Light: SB26 with a snoot from a little tripod on the table, 85mm, 1/8 power with a black straw grid, triggerd by sc-17 nikon cable, white paper right of H1 as a small reflector.

Try this in Youtube: youtu.be/Ov_63GHPrIw Surround sound test using surround capture rig: two Zoom H1 recorders mounted as you see in the first frames of the video. You should be able to hear this in 5.1 surround sound, if you've got the requisite gear.

Cobbled this together using some foam-covered metal fitness ring, a brass bell hanger, bolts, nuts, washers, a Dremel-diamond-wheel-cut metal bar that once was a part of a clothes-hanging device, a salvaged tripod mount I got in pieces cheaply at the thrift shop as well, the mini mount with positional ball of a dollar tree camera tripod (under the Zoom H1), and the Zoom H1 and cheap HD Aiptek camera with crappy quality mic (thus the audio recorder).
It is a rough steady camera rig, which does help steady the shot while going doing stairs, doing 360 pans, and just standing still. I cut the bolt holes using a Dremel bit then widened them with my cordless drill since it lacks enough power to do metal properly most of the time. Came out very well for a first go.
You generally hold it with your right hand by the steady bar, and hold the foam circle by the left middle with your left hand, and can turn the metal rig a bit forward using the steady bar as needed. It rest comfortably on your chest or stomach if you get tired holding it without aid as well.
