I admit I did not find photographing a liquid easy.

Schuyler Grapes (blue)

Schuyler is a blue-skinned hybrid wine and table grape created in 1947 by crossing the red Vitis vinifera Zinfandel with the Vitis labrusca hybrid Ontario. It is the parent, with the hybrid Seyval, of Cayuga White and its sister Horizon. It was created, along with many hybrid grapes designed for the climate of New York's Finger Lakes, at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station located at Cornell University in Geneva, New York. It is very cold tolerant, down to -29 °C / -20 °F. Bred by Wellington and Oberle, it is also known as "New York 13920".

I think I had a good talking to, and when all seemed lost, I became inspired! Or perhaps it was the very nice bottle of Carnivor Zinfandel I returned to that had the desired effect. I had got rather sick of daffodils, but regurgitated versions of this seemed to improve the more I fiddled.......or drank. It's a panormaniacal shot of course.

With the brix (sugar) reading in the desired range, we decided to harvest our vineyard on Sunday.

From our modest vineyard.

Our backyard vineyard of Zinfandel and Petite Syrah grapes. We get about 5 cases (60 bottles) a year.

After falling into the glass twice Vinnie the village vintner tastes his 2015 zinfandel and decides after a glass or two the villagers won't care what it tastes like.

My favorite wine at the moment is a Zinfandel 2017 or 2018 from Rombauer Vineyards in El Dorado county California. Simply delicious! This foliage reminded me of that wine.

As the grapes are picked, we gather in circles, some at the fermenting tub, some at tables, and each grape is hand plucked from the stems. The conversation is like an old sewing circle crossed with barroom banter.

We planted one vine of Zinfandel

5 years ago; this is our first harvest

since. Not enough for vino, but still a great reward.

Lodi, California is a city of almost 70,000 located at the northern end of the San Joaquin Valley. It is well known for its Zinfandel grapes. I was visiting our company’s large wine bottling and distribution center there today, and made a small detour to take a look at the historic downtown area.

This arch was constructed specifically for the first (and last) Lodi Tokay Carnival in 1907. It was the city’s first grape harvest celebration – a three-day extravaganza that was so difficult to repeat that it wasn’t until 1934 that the Lodi Grape Festival began. That event still occurs annually every September.

With help from many friends, we hand pluck each grape off the stems and fill the tub for crushing.

Zinfandel by Robert Mondavi winery, Woodbridge, 13,5%

This Zinfandel by Robert Mondavi winery is absolutely gorgeous! At a temperature of 20 degrees, the wine is “drinkable”, with very soft tannins, a slight flavor of currants and other dark berries. The acidity is minimal, the wine is light and goes well with boiled meat. For its almost budget price of 500 hryvnia, the wine is beyond praise. I regret that I only bought two bottles at the time.

The color is red with a ruby tint. The aroma has tones of red fruits and spices. Cherry and spices are felt in the taste. The aftertaste is long and velvety, with a pleasant tartness of ripe bird cherry berries.

It is dry with very small acidity, medium body, medium alcohol, it is well-balanced and had a moderate length finish.

Nowadays, Napa Valley has become a US wine legend. Clay soils and an excellent drainage system allow for the creation of some of the most interesting and profound wines in the world. It was the wines from Napa Valley that once glorified the Mondavi company and Robert Mondavi himself.

I really liked the play on words on these Zinfandel wine labels in our local Lidl store. Processed with the Prisma App (I still use it free). Best viewed Large. Happy Sliders Sunday!

Autumn in Napa. The vineyards are going dormant for the year. Despite the beautiful scenery, I still see bottles of Zinfandel in every view. Guess I really do have a problem.

And It must be 5 o'clock somewhere!

I’ve had this bottle of wine in my refrigerator for about 7 years. I kind of doubt it is drinkable now – but I have held on to it because I work for this company, and this reminds me of a bit of history. This wine is pretty well known, but not everyone knows the story behind it. The first batch was actually a fermenting mistake. Before discarding it Bob Trinchero tasted it, and found it light, refreshing, and fruity. He bottled it and lots of other people agreed. This is no longer our best selling wine, and we make many other more expensive and very fine wines. But this one played a part in moving the American masses to start drinking wine, and it is a pleasure to work for a family that played a big role in the history of Napa Valley.
