This is the beautiful harbour of the main town on the island, Zakynthos Town. Rebuilt after the earthquake of 1953, the town centre is a hive of activity and the harbour welcomes those to the island arriving by sea.

The mountains rising steeply away in the background are a feature of the island and in particular this town, forming a huge backdrop to the clean lines of the harbour. St Dionysios Church can be seen on the left of the image. Originally founded in 1708 the church has undergone a number of renovations and is the focal point of the port.

Go Zakynthos

Took five separate shots in landscape format and made slight adjustments in Lightroom once I returned to the UK. Then merged together in CS3 with very few minor adjustments to the perspective and a small crop before desaturating and boosting contrast to get the desired effect.

Zakynthos, and the other Ionian islands, was a British possession from 1815 until 1864, and this fact is mainly remembered through the presence of the (slightly unkempt) English Cemetery tucked away in a corner of Zante Town.
