23rd April 2012 is the 30th anniversary of the ZX Spectrum 48K. Sir Clive Sinclair's wonder machine revolutionised home computing in the UK, changed a lot of people's lives and got us hooked on gaming forever.
This picture has just a few of my favourite games, the ones I didn't have to rake out of the loft at least, and the Speccy that belonged to my gran (ours was traded up for a +2 which still works.) The Hobbit is represented by the book that was packaged with the game. This landmark text adventure with pictures(!) and characters who wandered off doing their own thing and generally wrecking your game was amazing at the time and a system seller. The totally bonkers games in the middle are by Automata and feature the Best Game Character In The World Ever, the PiMan. Most of their games had a song on the B-side of the tape. Pimania and Groucho are both text adventures which had real world prizes, something it would be very difficult to do in these days of teh internets, and the Groucho game inspired me to watch the Marx Brothers' films. Dictator is a strategy game of text based choices which you can't win, only stave off disaster for as long as possible. Bottom left is a Sinclair User magazine (Your Sinclair was better!) cover tape featuring Portals of P'Thaal, an RPG on the Speccy, blimey. You can see how small and sweet the Spectrum is from the size of the cassette. I was amazed when I first saw a Speccy plugged into an ordinary TV because I was expecting something like a Commodore PET with the built in monitor, something the size of today's PCs at least. Bottom right are 2 budget rereleases which only cost £1.99 as you can see on the labels! The cover of Skool Daze is a rip off, er, homage to The Bash Street Kids in the Beano because the game looks and plays like an animated comic. I could never finish it... Chaos: The Battle Of Wizards by Julian Gollop is The Most Fun Strategy Game Ever and the game I spent the most hours playing on the Spectrum.
Check out www.worldofspectrum.org to see more games than you can possibly imagine and you can even play them in a browser.
Oh yes, it's also St. George's Day!
