The Battle of Dybbøl was the biggest battle during the 2nd Schleswig War (otherwise known as the 2nd Danish-Prussian War). The Battle had lasted from April 2nd to the 18th. In February, the Danish army was ordered to retreat from the Danevirke postition (Denmarks oldest and strongest defense lines at one point). After the fast and messy retreat, the Danish army arrived at Dybbøl, where the fortifications were built as one of Denmarks last attempts to hold back against the Prussian army. The fortifications of Dybbøl consisted of 10 redoubts (armed earthworks) with connecting trench lines to each redoubt moat. Each redoubt had atleast 1 concrete ammunition casemate, with cannons looking out at no man's land. Most of the bigger redoubts contained a blockhouse, made for housing some troops while under artillery fire. On April 2nd, the Prussians started digging zig-zag trenches towards the Danes. From April 2-17, a lot of the fighting was through artillery, the Danes and Prussians firing back and forth at each other with cannons. On April 12, the famous Dybbøl Mill was hit by a Prussian shell, crippling it. By 3 a.m on April 18th, the Prussian generals ordered the harshest artillery bombardment on the Danish postitions. From 3a.m - 10a.m, 126 artillery cannons fired on the Danish fortifications. As the shelling ceased, the Danes came out of hiding, shaking from the shock. Most of the Blockhouses had been destroyed, cannons were knocked over, Dybbøl was a mess. At 10a.m, the Prussians were ordered to storm. The first wave of 10,000 troops charged out of the trenches and ran into no man's land towards the Prussians. The Danes fired away with everything they had. A Danish warship named "Rolf Krake" fired on the Prussians from the western part of the Alsund near Redoubt 1. After 30 mins, 6 of the 10 redoubts have be captured (in order of capture : redoubts VI, V, I, II, III, IV). By 10:30, the Danish 8th Brigade of 3,000 men, stationed at the Dybbøl Mill, commenced the counterattack. Lieutenant Wilhem Dinesen drew his sword and charged with the 8th Brigade. The line expanded from redoubts V and IV, where most of the Prussians were at that time, the 8th Brigade firing at the Prussians, causing slight heavy losses for the Prussian companies. The 8th Brigade managed to push what was left of the first 10,000 Prussians back to the Redoubts and trenches. However, a reserve force of 2,000 charged and joined the fight against the 8th Brigade, forcing Dinesen to retreat with his men, to the town of Sønderborg. By noon, the Prussians had taken over all of Dybbøl.
