Winter in the Yukon can be harsh, with extreme temperatures dipping down into -40c and below. Whilst it can cause some issues with day-to-day living which require us to go into 'survival mode', those cold temperatures produce some absolutely stunning winter landscapes.
Last week I took a drive out of Whitehorse to explore a favourite local spot of mine. We've been experiencing a warmer snap recently, but the river banks were still thick with 7 inches of ice. Huge slabs of broken ice were visible in the river itself, evidence of a previous freeze up. Last week however the water was flowing freely and the afternoon light was incredible.
When people think of Emerald lake in Canada, they usually think of the famous Emerald Lake in the Rockies. Not many people know that the Yukon also has it's own Emerald lake, which looks just as beautiful with its autumnal colours and stunning aqua waters.
One from the archives today that's been hidden away in my 'To be uploaded' folder for far too long!
Here's a black and white shot of the stunning mountains in Haines Pass covered in snow, taken during a roadtrip over to Haines in Alaska. I absolutely love this drive, especially during the winter.

A part of the Tombstone mountain range in the Yukon territory which is rarely seen by people. This high alpine lake amongst these impressive mountains is not part of any hiking routes in the backcountry and I wonder how many peoples have dipped their toes in this seldom seen water. We were lucky to see it from above during an aerial tour of the area.
Storm clouds rolling in over Grizzly Lake in the Tombstones. We were unfortunately forced to end our trip early due to adverse weather. I managed to snap this shop before we lost the mountains in the mist.

Chalet Cheese Cooperative in Monroe, Wisconsin is the only cheese factory in the United States producing Limburger cheese.
This GMC Yukon XL was parked outside of the building. Judging from its license plate, it was closely associated with Chalet Cheese Co-op.

The speed limit here is 35 MPH. Even though I was moving along a bit quicker than that, this GMC Yukon XL with Connecticut registration plate AC-76991 just had to get around me.

It doesn't have a fold-flat third row and it sure is gigantic, but the 2008 GMC Yukon XL is an excellent choice for large families who need a full-size SUV with maximum seating, towing and cargo capacities.
Pros
Seating for up to nine passengers, only slightly less interior space than the Astrodome, smooth road manners, attractive interior with quality materials, powerful 6.2-liter V8 in the Denali.
Cons
Third-row seat doesn't fold flat, 5.3-liter V8 struggles with hefty loads, portly curb weight dulls handling.
What's New for 2008
Side curtain airbags are standard on all Yukon XLs. A six-speed automatic transmission and stability control are now standard on 3/4-ton (2500) models. Turn-by-turn navigation is added to OnStar on the SLT and Denali trim levels.
