The Lantern Festival is celebrated annually on the 15th day of the first lunar month to mark the grand finale of the Chinese New Year celebrations. It is also the very first full moon day of the New Year, symbolizing the coming of the spring. People usually celebrate this festival by enjoying family dinner together, eating Yuanxiao (glutinous rice dumpling), carrying paper lanterns, and solving the riddles on the lanterns. The festival is celebrated with fanfare events in Taiwan, including the internationally famed Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in New Taipei City, Bombing Lord Han Dan in Taitung, and Yanshui Beehive Rockets Festival in Tainan, to welcome the New Year in a spirit of peace, prosperity and joy.

The Lantern Festival (also known as the Yuanxiao Festival or Shangyuan Festival in China; Chap Goh Meh Festival in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore; Yuen Siu Festival in Hong Kong, and "Tết Thượng Nguyên" or "Tết Nguyên Tiêu" in Vietnam); is a festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar year in the Chinese calendar, the last day of the lunisolar Chinese New Year celebration. It officially ends the Chinese New Year celebrations.
In ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, for only the emperor and noblemen had large ornate ones; in modern times, lanterns have been embellished with many complex designs. For example, lanterns are now often made in shapes of animals.
In some region and countries, this festival is also regarded as the Chinese version of St. Valentine's Day, a day celebrating love and affection between lovers in Chinese tradition and culture.

Sky lanterns, a.k.a. Kongming lanterns, are released as the main activity of Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival at Shifen Sky Lantern Plaza on Feb 28, 2010. Strategically used in wars in ancient China, sky lanterns nowadays are transformed into media to the Heaven. People would write down their wishes on the lanterns, burn the bamboo papers that soaked in oil and tied below them, and then released them into the sky so that the gods would receive their wishes and make them come true. Pingxi Township is the original location where early people race sky lanterns to pray for good luck, now it become the largest event of Yuan-Xiao Festival (Lantern Festival) in northern Taiwan.
天燈，又名孔明燈，最早是用於戰爭之用，今日多用於祈福，上達天聽。人們在天燈上寫下自己的願望，點燃天燈施放至空中，以此祈求願望實現。台北縣平溪鄉是台灣放天燈活動的發源地，先民有"鬥天燈"的習俗，用以祈求來年好運，發展至今成為北台灣元宵節最盛大的活動。2010/2/28於平溪鄉十分天燈廣場。

Pingsi is a rural township in the north eastern part of Taiwan. Located in a remote mountain area outside of Taipei and run through by Keelung river, it was a small coal mining town in the early 20th century.
Sky lanterns are traditionally lanterns made of oiled paper with a bamboo frame that contain a small candle or other combustible material (such as the fake prayer's paper money). When lit the candle heats the air and causes the lantern to rise into the air. Ideally the lantern floats back to the ground when the fuel for the flame is exhausted. Sky Lanterns are also known as "Kung Ming lanterns", since some say they were invented by Chu Ke-liang (also known as Kung Ming) during the Three Kingdoms period as way of communication during war time.
During Lantern Festival, all kinds of red and orange sky lanterns light the still night sky over the village of Pinghsi creating a scene of unusual beauty.

Zhengcheng Lou, Fujian, China
Zhengcheng Lou is one symbolic Tulou building located in Yongding, Fujian. As it was Yuanxiao 元宵Festival at that moment, colorful light decorations were seen every corner in the village. The Fujian Tulou 福建土楼 are houses of Chinese rural dwellings unique to the Hakka People in the mountainous areas in southeastern Fujian, China. This series was from my trip to China in early 2018.

Amid fanfare, people pray for a prosperous and peaceful year, while making a new, auspicious start through eating sweet rice-ball soup.
Sky lanterns were released to follow the wind, rising up to the ancestors to report that all was well and to pray for blessings. Slowly this evolved to become a local event for the Yuanxiao Festival in the Pingxi area.

Every 19 years, Valentine's Day coincide with Chinese Lantern Festival, the last day of the Chinese New Year celebration which is also the first Full Moon of Luna New Year. (Next time, it would be 2033 and 2071)

Cada ano, quando o inverno rigoroso vai terminando e se aproxima a primavera, o povo chinês realiza uma festa com solenidade e grande animação. É a primeira festa tradicional do ano.
Festa das Lanternas
No dia 15 do primeiro mês do calendário lunar se realiza a festa das Lanternas. É costume comer bolinhos de arroz glutinoso (yuanxiao) cheios de doces açucarados que simbolizam a reunião familiar. Nesse dia se acendem lanternas de papel ou de seda nos portões e nas ruas. Ao anoitecer, se realizam festas com lanternas de diversas cores e diversos desenhos de formas exóticas e em alguns lugares se fazem adivinhações realizam danças com roupas típicas sempre carregando as lanternas que são feitas no mesmo dia pela própria população.

"In order to appeal for Heaven's blessings following the 921 earthquake, the Taipei County Government specially commisioned a huge heavenly lantern sixty-seven meters in height and weighing two hunderd kilograms for the 2000 Pingxi Heavenly Lantern Festival." Since then, the Sky Lanterns Festival becomes a very special day in Taipei County's Pingxi Twonship.

It's Yuanxiao (元宵节) / Chap Goh Mei today and Rouge has cooked tangyuan (汤圆) for everyone! She hopes that even as the family grows, everyone will get along famously well and peace and harmony reigns (团团圆圆).
Sky lanterns were released to follow the wind, rising up to the ancestors to report that all was well and to pray for blessings. Slowly this evolved to become a local event for the Yuanxiao Festival in the Pingxi area.

Here be dragons! We visited the China Festival of Light in the Zoo of Emmen: a traditional Chinese light show with gigantic lanterns and light sculptures, mostly of animals.
The China Festival of Lights website tells us something about the history of this enchanting festival:
In traditional Chinese culture the festival of light represents good luck and prosperity, as symbolised by the dragon: a wonderful notion that lends itself perfectly to this time of year. The Chinese name for the Festival of Lights is "Yuan Xiao". It predates the Western calendar and is traditionally celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month of the Chinese New Year, when the moon is full. Although there are several different stories about the origin of light festivals, the most well known centres on the first Chinese emperor, Qinshihuang, and his successors. They tried to appease Taiyi, the god of heaven, by organising an enormous lantern festival each year because they believed that an awe-inspiring, multicoloured lantern festival would invoke the sympathy of the gods and bring prosperity.
During the Sui dynasty (600 AD) foreign guests were invited to admire the lantern festival. At the beginning of the Tang dynasty, in the early seventh century, the festival lasted three days, but during the Song dynasty the festival spread to all large Chinese cities. The lanterns were made of jade and coloured glass and the figures on the lanterns were sourced from ancient folktales. The largest festivals took place during the fifteenth century when a lantern festival lasted fifteen days. During this period Emperor Chengzu allocated a special area to be used to exhibit a vast collection of lanterns. At present the most well-known festival of light takes place in the Chinese city Chengdu.
