Yesterday's farm/Limousin cow themed wedding cake for the new Mr & Mrs Padfield, in situ at the bride's family farm.
Had huge fun doing this cake and the figures - the design (and cow/churn side design in particular) is inspired by a farming cake by the fabulously talented Connie's Cakes - thank you again to Connie and Gillian for kindly giving me permission to use and adapt their design (I hope I have done it justice!). The edible hay bale separators were the bride and groom's idea, and echoed the amazing 12 foot tall hay bale "bride and groom" that marked the entrance to the farm! Gave me a good excuse too to do piped sheafs of wheat, which was an idea held over from a wedding cake enquiry last year when the design ended up going in a totally different direction.
The bride's Mum is Gill from Field House Flowers, so the floral decor (grown especially for the wedding) and general "rustic chic" styling was just beautiful - a masterclass in wedding styling! Wish I'd taken more photos.
Top two tiers fruit; 10 inch vanilla tier; 12 inch extra depth lemon tier at the base.
...you might stumble across a beautiful Spring woodland wedding!
This was a woodland-themed 4 tier rich organic choc ganache cake that I made for my best friend's wedding last weekend - handmade sugar bluebells, heart-shaped vine foliage and ferns/trees, piped lilies of the valley in the airbrushed grass, and handpainted bee couple flying up the cake. The design echoed the beautiful woodland/garden setting for the wedding, and also took cues from the invitation (the heart on the top). There was a little surprise Mr and Mrs Pine Cone (surrounded by some favourite books) for good measure!
Nearly 35 years of ace friendship, so a very special cake for me for obvious reasons :-) A very happy day indeed.
First in a series of handmade gingerbread cookie wedding favours - perfect as a gift for wedding guests.
Had a fun Saturday afternoon experimenting with different ideas - and had a very happy husband who got to eat them when I was done!
All detail is handmade/handpiped.
Wedding cake with delicate royal icing using and sugar flowers in heather hues, topped with a handknitted bride and groom lovebirds knitted by the bride herself!
Gosh, I've been absent from Flickr for a long time! I've been so busy this summer with wedding and other cakes that I've not had chance to upload any pictures to flickr (I tend to use my Facebook page). I'll try to get some favourites up though now work is getting back onto an even keel (somewhat).
Here's one of my absolute favourites from the season - a sunny cake for a very grey September day! Congratulations to Claire and Sam from London, who got married in early September at Villa Farm, a licenced wedding venue just outside York. Claire requested a vintage floral/eclectic take on the "LOVE Letters" design. Colour scheme was yellows and greys (which I love as a combination), with a few pastel colours thrown in for fun.
This cake was an absolute joy to make, and I've received a terrific testimonial from the new Mr and Mrs Hart this evening which has been the cherry on top!
First No More Tiers wedding of the summer! This cupcake tower was set up at the lovely half-timbered Hospitium in York Museum Gardens. The bride's theme for the day was roses and birdcages, so the cupcakes not only had a rose-shaped swirl to match the beautiful fresh avalanche roses, but were also delicately rose flavoured with rose buttercream to match (my new favourite thing! Although it benefits from vanila too to give the rose flavour more "warmth" and depth of flavour). The birdcage cupcake wrappers were sourced by the bride (from Hobbycraft I think) to match her table placecards.
Top cake was a rich choc cake with my first real attempt at doing a full cake in brush embroidery (will try to post a separate pic of this).
Beautiful fresh roses and birdcage arrangements for the tables supplied by Blooming Occasions of Pocklington.
Friday's wedding cake - the creative brief was something simple, with fresh flowers and trimmed with ivory and purple ribbons. I suggested the vintage lace overlay so that the colour contrast between tiers wasn't too stark.
Tiers all different flavours - bottom tier of brandy-soaked rich fruit cake, middle tier in vanilla madeira with vanilla buttercream and raspberry preserve, and top tier rich chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream. There was also a separate cutting cake in lemon madeira with lemon curd and lemon buttercream.

Last Friday's wedding cake, delivered to Grays Court in York, a beautiful historic venue just behind the Minster.
Thought I'd show you a widescreen pic of the cake in situ as I was totally in love with the wedding styling - a rustic chic look with hessian accents and wild flowers in jam jars of various sizes. I thought that the mix-and-match bright colours of the wild flowers complemented the simple elegance of the white cake perfectly. Flowers were supplied by Field House Flowers, Everingham.
I'm afraid this isn't my design - the bride came with an iphone pic of what she wanted, which was actually the middle tiers of a larger cake (5 or 6 tiers) that she'd seen. I recognised that the design she wanted was itself an adaptation of a Tiffany blue cake in one of Peggy Porschen's marvellous books - one which I'd wanted to do for ages - so jumped at the chance to make this cake.
For the techies - top and bottom tiers were extra deep fruit cakes (baked a little deeper than normal and built up very slightly with a 15mm drum iced into the base); middle tier was a regular sized vanilla madeira.
Not had time to upload many pics in recent weeks, but here's a wedding cake from a couple of weeks ago - a more opulent take on my "Love letters" design that I created in ice cream pastels earlier in the year. The confetti trails around the cake worked well at the venue, where the cake was displayed against a huge floor to ceiling mirror so there was a 360 degree view.
Here's the "Scandinavian Chic / Lovebirds" cake that I made for the wedding fayres I'm doing this week. Because wedding cakes don't have to always be white, you know!
Have had an idea that I'd wanted to do something along the lines of red/white Scandi-chic for some time now (Swedish influences have come into my life in recent years thanks to the Swedish fiancé of my best pal - it's not all Abba and Ikea); an accidental over-order of red paste in the summer gave me the perfect excuse to execute it. The design evolved along the way, partly due to the lovely ribbon that I found to go around the base.
I love red and white together - it can look so clean, especially when the red is matt finish. We have red and white stitched decorations over the fireplace at Christmas along similar lines, which was also a source of inspiration. I also think that this would look equally effective in midnight blue/white.
I made 2 matching gingerbread favour designs to accompany this wedding cake - realised in uploading these pics that I've forgotten to photograph them, so will get these up later.
Straight from camera shot just after the bride's make-up had been applied minus her lipstick.
I know all brides are beautiful either with look or personality, but Ruth here is blessed with both. This has been one of the most enjoyable weddings we've covered.

Amy and Rowan asked me to design a wedding cake around the Yorkshire flag (see link in first comment below for an image if you're not a local!). Here's what I came up with - a striking blue cake to represent the flag background, adorned with some stylised Yorkshire roses. It's a bold bride that chooses a deep blue wedding cake, but I loved making this.
The wedding was at the historic Merchant Adventurers' Hall, a medieval guildhall in the heart of York - all half timbered architecture and period fittings (not to mention the hilariously wonky floors that gave me a little bit of cake stress!). You can see one of the huge fireplaces in the main hall in the background of the picture. I got to see the bride and groom just as I was leaving, bride looked amazing in a medieval-style dress.
Tiers all different flavours - top tier rich fruit cake; 2nd tier Cherry Bakewell; 3rd tier was an extra deep lemon cake; bottom tier was a vanilla cake with raspberry filling.
First wedding of 2013 for me - and also my first proper wonky wedding cake!
I have done a small wonky cake for a birthday before, but needed a different structural technique for this one as the minimalist design didn't allow any margin for error on the join between tiers (yikes!). This cake was probably longer in the planning/stressing than in the making (although that took quite a while as well, not to mention assistance from the long-suffering Mr No More Tiers who not only helped me with working out the angles for the structure, but also made me a bespoke carry box for this cake - oh and also had to find time to fit the new dishwasher!).
Thanks also to Jen at Jen's Cakery for some last-minute reassurance about structure and transporting such a cake this time last week when the nerves kicked in! Happily after a few sleepless nights last week it went without a hitch and the wedding was fab.
The little mice peeping around the tiers are a nod to the Mouseman furniture in the church where the couple got married - see link here - www.bardseypcc.org.uk/photos.php?pgid=2&photoid=12680...
The reception was held at Wood Hall in West Yorkshire.
Top tiers in rich chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream; bottom tiers in "Cherry Bakewell" flavour - an almond sponge with Amaretto syrup, almond buttercream and a Morello Cherry preserve filling.

I relished the chance to recreate my personalised luggage stack birthday cake from last year for a wedding this week.
The bride and groom got married a couple of weeks ago at Disneyworld in Florida, and this cake was for their friends and family get together back in the UK this week. Unusually, the cake was ordered by the groom as a surprise to the bride, and he was very involved in the finer details of the design.
The sugar luggage tags were made in the same design as their invitations, and also the laminated luggage tags that they'd produced for their guests travelling to the US for the first leg of the wedding. The stickers on the cases represent places special to the couple - a combined effort of me and the groom to find ones that were just right!
Finally - since at DisneyWorld you are encouraged to spot the "Hidden Mickeys", there are at least 4 Mickey Mouse silhouettes concealed on the cake (and visible on this photo). Can you spot them all? ;-)
First wedding of the year this weekend, and goodness this week was a busy one!
As well as the slightly nerve-inducing cake (pic here) and extra cutting cake for the kitchen, I also had 100 of these gingerbread favours to make. Oh, and because I'm never one for an easy life, I had a 2 day wedding fair as well!!
The groom at this wedding was Irish, and so I added a little tiny shamrock to the buttonhole of each "Groom" cookie. Slightly duff photo as it was on my iPhone (the good camera was back in the car) but you get the idea.
There were some separate designs for the kids in the wedding party, if I have a decent pic I'll upload it later.
This is my first proper attempt at brush embroidery on a cake. It was the topper cake for the "Roses and Birdcages" cupcake tower in the previous photo. I had a fairly free rein on the design of the top cake - the bride had mentioned that she had a wedding dress with lace elements so I suggested that brush embroidery might be a nice idea to reflect this.
Enjoyed doing this, although it took far longer than I had imagined!
You can also see more clearly in this pic the rose swirl cupcakes and the fresh avalanche roses that they were supposed to represent.

A close up of the keepskae pine cone cake topper I made for a wedding cake this Autumn.
I've got another one on the cards for November, hurrah!
My first wedding cake of 2015 was a big bold affair, with a raspberry and gold colour scheme. Bride and groom Penny and Joe wanted something modern and fun without being overly formal, but still in keeping with the grand surroundings of beautiful Swinton Park.
Topped with a handmade sugar peony and finished off with a corsage of sugar rose, gold rose leaves and snowberries (the latter seemed a fitting filler for this time of year before the blossoms are out).
Loved doing the candystriped tier, even though it was as time consuming as expected. The hardest bit for me was the request for "random spots in no discernable pattern" on the bottom tier - I'm hopeless at doing "random"!
Thanks to amazing Cake Husband TimBrook | Photo for not only helping with delivery and set up and this photo, but also helping me to bag up the 86 matching gingerbread favours and tie pretty ribbon bows at some ungodly hour last Thursday night!
Clare and Neil had a very clear vision of the styling for their intimate November wedding - shades of mushroom and burgundy in the colourscheme (but not too Christmassy), with table centrepieces of log slices with pine cones, log slices, conkers and autumn leaves. There would also be handmade bunting. With these elements in mind, I reprised the "Mr & Mrs Pine Cone" keepsake cake topper that I made for a wedding earlier in the year, with bunting on the cake to reflect the materials that Clare provided to me.
Loved doing this, the venue styling at beautiful Gray's Court in York was even more gorgeous than I had imagined!
A very seasonally suited wedding cake for Lucy and Tom, who got married today on a very sunny Good Friday at Rudding Park in Harrogate.
I can't take credit for the idea of a decorated Easter egg on a cake - Lucy had a very clear idea of the design she wanted*, hopefully I've done her ideas justice! As you'd expect from an Easter cake, it is three tiers of rich chocolate cake. A crown of fresh gypsophila around the base finished it off.
Many congratulations to this lovely couple!
(* I've been unable to trace the maker of the cake on which this cake design, or certainly the spiral decorated egg, was based, as the photo I was shown by the couple was a snap rather than a photo online - happy to credit if anyone recognises their cake in this!).
