Today was such a nice day, it was the first day of 2009 in which I wore a tank outside. It feels like it's almost summer!

Shavasana manager for stress management

SHAVASANA; (Corpse pose)

Method: Lie down on your back. Keep the legs straight on the floor, with both the feet apart as shoulder width. Toes should be turned outward as far as possible. Let the fingers curl up slightly. The Head and the Spine should be in a straight line. Relax the whole body and stop all physical movement. Close your eyes gently. Now mentally, watch your Breathing and allow it to become rhythmic and relaxed. Duration should be minimum 5 minutes.

BENEFITS/ EFECTS: This asana relaxes the whole Psycho-physiological system. This asana is very good for stress management in the body, reducing the Body’s energy loss, lowering the respiration and pulse rule, and resting the whole system. This asana is also known as mritasana. This posture brings a deep, meditative state of rest, which may help in the repair of tissues and cells, and in releasing stress. It also gives time for the yoga workout to sink in at a deeper level.

This posture leaves you in a state of rejuvenation. It is the perfect way to end a yoga session, particularly if it has been a fast-paced one.

It helps reduce blood pressure, anxiety, and insomnia.

This is an excellent way to ground the body and reduce the Vata dosha(imbalance of the air element) in the body.

Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose) gets its name from Sanskrit where “Adho” means “Half”, “Mukha” means “Face” and “Svan” means “Dog”.

Benefits of Adho Mukha Svanasana

Downward Facing Dog pose increases circulation of both blood and lymph systems, nourishing and revitalizing cells throughout the whole body while clearing out old waste products.

Adho Mukha Svanasana also expands the chest and strengthens the lungs for better respiratory function.

Anyone who has experienced sciatic pain will notice how Downward Dog elongates all the muscles that run along the backs of the legs, releasing the tightness that often leads to pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Yoga students looking to build strength will develop tone throughout the length of their body though this pose: Downward Facing Dog gently builds muscles in the shoulders, arms, and abdominal region, as well as along the back and down the thighs and calves.

What else does it stretch? Adho Mukha Svanasana stretches and decongests the spinal column, a vital function that promotes the free flow of energy and nerve information between the body and brain.

In some cases, Downward Facing Dog can provide relief from headaches.
