Taken in our garden.

We think this is a Mayfly and probably the Large Dark Olive Mayfly Beetis Rhodani. If it isn't I hope someone will set us straight. The flower on the other hand, is definitely a clematis - Betty Corning.

At first I didn't know he was there. I took a single photo to upload to the big monitor to see if there were stamens inside and there he was, all blurry. So I went back out and made his acquaintance!

Majestic.

This image is inspired and dedicated to my beautiful yoga teacher Marisa whom I have been practicing with for almost 8 years. She is an amazing ashtanga and vinyasa flow teacher. Saturday's class always starts off with pranayama breathing; the breath of life, the energy of the soul.

I love stretching and this pose is the ultimate to release tension along the front of the thighs. My oldest son saw me do this once when I was fully warmed up and had my foot on the floor. He said "ok, that's just wrong". Maybe so, but as long as I'm able to gently cooerce that foot to the floor I'll continue to practice my half frog pose in hopes that one day I'll be able to achieve full frog pose correctly.

I have been so busy this week!! my yoga practice has suffered because of it. And my body is protesting. It's amazing how my muscles are tightening up so quickly and how the body is craving sun salutations and deep stretching. I may have to sneak away this afternoon and relieve some tension.

Have a wonderful tension-free Thursday!

Happy Wednesday flickr peeps!

Been super busy with work this week. Back later to catch up.

Happy Textured Thursday Flickr friends! Friday is in sight.

Titibasana or Firefly pose is one of my favorite yoga asanas. This image shows the first step to getting to Titibasana. Next step is to extend legs straight up. Problem is that I hurt my right hamstring 3 weeks ago during yoga practice and can't fully extend right leg. This happened because I pushed my body too far. I am not happy about this at all but taking it as a lesson - be kinder to my body.

Yoga. It's not for me. I wish it was - I'd love to be more stretchy and bendy and fitter and more spiritual. I really would. But I'd much rather choose a good run over twisting myself into inconceivable positions.

I do, however, love to watch yoga being practiced, seeing the beautiful bodies slowly lift into handstands, rise up into the downward dog, and so on, and on, and on!

Matt

From Wikipedia:

Yoga (Sanskrit, Pāli: योग yóga) refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines that originated in India.[1] The word is associated with meditative practices in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Within Hinduism, it refers to one of the six orthodox (āstika) schools of Hindu philosophy, and to the goal towards which that school directs its practices. In Jainism, yoga is the sum total of all activities — mental, verbal and physical.

Major branches of yoga in Hindu philosophy include Rāja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Hatha Yoga. According to the authoritative Indian philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, yoga, based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, comprises one of the six main Hindu schools of philosophy (darshanas), together with Kapila's Samkhya, Gautama's Nyaya, Kanada's Vaisheshika, Jaimini's Purva Mimamsa, and Badarayana's Uttara Mimamsa or Vedanta. Many other Hindu texts discuss aspects of yoga, including the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Shiva Samhita and various Tantras.

The Sanskrit word yoga has many meanings, and is derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj," meaning "to control," "to yoke" or "to unite." Translations include "joining," "uniting," "union," "conjunction," and "means." It is also possible that the word yoga derives from "yujir samadhau," which means "contemplation" or "absorption." This translation fits better with the dualist Raja Yoga because it is through contemplation that discrimination between prakrti (nature) and purusha (pure consciousness) occurs.

Someone who practices yoga or follows the yoga philosophy to a high level of attainment is called a yogi or yogini.

Revolved Head-to-Knee Pose - Side Stretch Satisfaction

One of the most important muscles stretched during a sidebend is the quadratus lumborum (QL). It sits deep in the back of the waist, attaching to the top of the back pelvis and running up to the lowest rib in the back. When it contracts, it pulls the bottom rib and the pelvis closer together. In standing, the left QL hikes the left pelvis and leg up away from the floor. The QL can become short and stiff if you regularly spend long hours sitting in chairs, and it can become tight and painful. In sidebends where an arm stretches overhead to reach for the foot, the latissimus dorsi muscle, which extends from the back waist to the armpit, will also stretch.
