Yama

In a large pit in the middle of town here, at a place called Yama, stands a monument dedicated to 5,000 Jews killed by the Nazis in, 1942. This sculpture representing a group of people descending a slope, who were led into this pit of horror.

Here victims were forced to dig their own mass-grave, then shot by the Nazis and thrown into the pit and buried, some still alive. This site, where many victims were killed in a whirlwind of extermination, is now surrounded by modern residential buildings.

Erected in 1946, the monument was the first and only one in the USSR devoted to the Holocaust which displayed Yiddish writing. Remarkably, not only did the monument survive the efforts of Stalin to eradicate all traces of Jewishness, but it also became the only one in Belarus where Jews could legally gather without any interference from the government, which they did throughout the period of Communist rule.

Thanks, Megumi!!

Retsina (Greek: Ρετσίνα) is a Greek white (or rosé) resinated wine, which has been made for at least 2000 years. Its unique flavor is said to have originated from the practice of sealing wine vessels, particularly amphorae, with Aleppo Pine resin in ancient times. Before the invention of impermeable glass bottles, oxygen caused many wines to spoil within the year. Pine resin helped keep air out, while at the same time infusing the wine with resin aroma. The Romans began to use barrels in the 3rd century AD, removing any oenological necessity for resin, but the flavor itself was so popular that the style is still widespread today.

The Koubou-yama Kofun is a little mountain as ancient tomb. Around it, cherry blossoms are fully blooming.

I found this beautiful picture in an antique store, it was framed, and I didn't know who the picture was of, but something about it really captured me and I simply couldn't walk away! The information, which I found much later, tucked inside the picture frame, was titled "Yama's Story" tells all about this child and her story. The picture was taken by Phil Borges in 1995 in Lhasa, Tibet. I wonder what ever happened to this beautiful little girl...

clubweekend Fudji Yama 2020

This shot was taken in a restaurant in Sisi on the North Coast of Crete. The sun was setting as we finished our meal so took the opportunity to take this snap with our bottle of Raki.

Can't remember what he looks ready to pounce at? Probably Queso?
