Like many an NBC subsidiary, United Counties tried their hands at operating 'lightweight' PSV chassis in the 1970s. Not unreasonably, the locally built Bedford product featured in their orders for such and they took both 11m YRTs and 10m YRQs.

Unsurprisingly, these short life types, often shunned by enthusiasts too, are not now well represented in preservation. One happy survivor though is Willowbrook 001 bodied YRT, RBD 111M.

The bus is owned by a small consortium of United Counties enthusiasts who rescued it after its second life with Cornish independent Willis of Bodmin. Nearly six years or so ago it was moved to North Staffordshire for resoration, but after five years with the initial contractor who worked on it occasionally due to pressure of work, it was moved to Reliance Bus Works where the remaining two thirds of the job was completed.

It had always been the owners plans to debut it at a local event, so it was provisionally booked into today's Wellingborough rally. Unfortunately a major defect was identified with its engine and it had to be replaced using a reconditioned Bedford 500. The week was barely underway when a serious issue with it too made itself known. Mid week the latter engine was stripped and re-built in order to try to keep the hoped-for appointment and thankfully, today it drove the 110 miles from North Staffordshire to Northamptonshire without a problem.

Please see adjacent posting for detail.

After the recent discussions regarding Y Type bodied Bedfords, I remembered this shot. Taken on another day out with 'Berresfordsmotors', MSF 730P is seen languishing in the yard of Lewis of Llannerch y medd, Anglesey, having recently been withdrawn. According to Bus Lists on the web, it was new to Scottish Omnibuses (Eastern Scottish) as a 49 seat dual purpose machine, though quite clearly here it possesses bus seating.

Photos of buses which fell into the catagory refered to in the industry as 'lightweights' are sadly lacking in my collection. There was a time when I simply couldn't be bothered to raise my camera to a Bedford or a Ford, in much the same way that I wouldn't with a minibus today, infact a lot of whats around today! One that slipped through the net was this Bedford YRQ with Plaxton Derwent body working for the Arran Transport & Trading company, on the Isle of Arran,Scotland. It's seen here part way through it's journey from Brodick to Whiting Bay, passing a BP petrol station (with no prices displayed, always a warning to excersise caution..., but how we'd love it's then expensive prices today!)

Barton Transport made good commercial use of the Government's 'New Bus Grant' scheme. Broadly if an operator bought a bus/coach which complied with certain criteria, and promised to use it for at least 50% of it's mileage on Stage Carriage (Local Bus) service, then the government paid up to half the price. In this way many operators swept away many and varied older vehicles and gained quite modern fleets. (sadly for the enthusiast in cases like Barton) Here a 'grant doored' or 'Express' variant of Plaxton's Supreme IV body on a Bedford YMT chassis is seen working an express service in Norwich. RTV 594X was one of their last Bedfords. The driver is taking full advantage of the extra internal body cooling facility afforded by being able to drive with the doors open in the days before people actually believed that an instant injury or even death would result!

It is several years now since the business of Fuggles of Benenden closed, this shot was taken in 1988. The bus is a 1976 Bedford YLQ Duple Dominant service bus, NKE 303P. By the wet oil around the lift up engine flap it appears that either the engine is gassing, or someone hasn't replaced the dip-stick or oil filler cap properly. I think that the picture was taken outside Rye railway station, someone more local would know for sure, as my note taking was none existant. At first, I was going to crop out most of the yellow notice board, until I read that it proclaimed the building of a new coach park for British Rail, and a new bus garage for Hastings & District... does the latter still exist, was it ever built and who's is it now if it was?

As many a holiday in North Wales is inclined to be, the day I took this picture was one of severely contrasting weather conditions. One minute we had blue sky, the next it would be black and turbulent punctuated by bolts of lightening, rolling thunder and all followed by torrential downpours. Seemingly one of the best places to be in those circumstances was underground, so the family 'R' adjourned to Llechwedd Slate Caverns at Blaenau Ffestiniog. On arrival we were greeted by these two late generation 'lightweight' coaches and a coach park over which the tide appeared to be encroaching. On the right is a Plaxton Supreme IV bodied Bedford YMT ... a contemporary inependent's favourite, owned by Minsterley Motors and on the left a practically new Ford R series with Plaxton Paramount 'Express' bodywork belonging to well respected Derbyshire independent Andrews of Tideswell. This era of Ford coach, an R1115, represented Ford UK's final foray into full size coaches before leaving the market. Soon afterwards rival volume producer GM owned Bedford would follow suit.

Having recently learned of similar buses owned by Eastern Scottish, here's one which was formerly operated by Edinburgh Corporation / LRT. GSX 117N was an 11 metre Bedford YRT, and is seen here working for Shropshire independent Minsterley Motors. The location was Shrewsbury's former bus station, and the portion used by the private operators.

Photographed in the Kincardine Coach Terminal premises of Tay Valley (Cosgrove), Dundee is JNK 346N, a Bedford YRT with Caetano Estoril C53F coachwork.

It was new to Tate, Markyate in April 1975 and is seen here in May 1985.

Ok, so it's an Alexander Y Type, mounted on what I would say was a Bedford YRQ chassis. BSG 511L is seen here, in the ownership of Larne Congregational Church, resting on the coach park at Scarborough. What I don't know is who it was new to... was the Larne, Larne in Northern Ireland... and if so, why has it a 'mainland' registration? On an 'anoraky' note, it's interesting to see that the water filler on this little Bedford has been fitted on it's nearside as on contemporary AECs and Leylands... a much safer idea than in times of trouble attempting to top up whilst standing in the path of unsympathetic traffic.

The Kidsgrove area fleet of Stanway's Coaches has passed through several hands, five to be precise and even the latest of them has been restructured. The business was founded largely on 'lightweight' coaches, predominantly Bedfords, though two Leyland Leopards did pass through. As times moved on, Volvos were the favoured marque, until the present day when one of the most interesting and varied fleets is operated. In the above picture, an unusual 'sawn off' Bedford Y series which didn't serve long, had just been withdrawn. Guessing at it's origins, (as I reckon that isn't it's original reg.) it started life with Armchair Passenger Transport of Brentford. The apologetic little 'Stanways Coaches' sticker below the windscreen hints at it's most recent ownership.

Before the larger van and light truck derived minibuses really took off, the requirement for smaller buses and coaches was met primarily by abridged versions of mainstream coaches and even shortened full sized chassis. The firm Tricentrol had something of a trade in chassis modification, shortening Fords and Bedfords... and even lengthening the latter. Before too long though, the manufacturers themselves got in on the act with Bedford producing dinky versions of their popular Y series competing directly with Bristol's LHS. Here just such a coach with Plaxton Supreme IV bodywork sits on the layover park at Yeovil bus station. It's in the ownership of independent, Wakes of Sparkford. Latterly, Dennis produced a short version of their Javelin chassis, though because of the aforementioned wide availability of 'big minibuses', they never seemed to be as prolific.

It seems almost inconceivable nowadays in a car orientated UK that until relatively recently, factories operated their own buses for staff transport. Now even the concept of a sufficiently large UK factory would nonplus most.

This was a regular scene outside the Austin Reed / Chester Barrie factory at the station end of Weston Road Crewe at one time with coaches parked between bouts of activity. Prior to this duo, I recall the spot being occupied by a trio of Bedford Duple Viceroys. HUH996W, a Bedford YMT with Plaxton Supreme IV bodywork had been new to Evans coaches of Senghenydd in South Wales. After service here at the clothing factory, it joined the Kidsgrove based Stanway's Coaches fleet, where for some inexplicable reason it gained the nickname 'The hug'. I'm sorry, but neither I or BLOTW can offer any information on the history of Bedford YRT Duple Dominant RMA 609P.

For the record, the coaches are no more, and the factory was demolished to make way for another much needed DIY superstore... not.

Taken on a delivery job to North Eastern England, the operator recipient apparently shared this company's (Skelton Mini Buses) facilities. Sadly I believe, my friend and customer never did receive his full payment, but that's another story. The yard scene is typical of many an independent's premisis at the end of the 1980s/ early '90s, with several examples of the Bedford marque in evidence. Two are worthy of note, the green and white liveried one on the far right being a late model VAM, and the one second to the left standing proud seems to have received a little Supreme trim to it's Elite front end. By this time, Elites of any sort were a touch thin on the ground.

They were once everywhere, lightweight Bedford and Ford coaches with bodies like Duple's Dominant. They were so commonplace that I seldom if ever photographed them... a fact to which fellow omnibologist 'berresfordsmotors' will attest to. At least he bothered, as now they are practically no more, I'm wishing that I'd a more representative selection of these buses and coaches which formed the backbone of many a small independent's fleet. This particulary smart example, a Bedford YRT, MAN 111V is from the 'Tours (Isle of Man) fleet of Corkhills

and is seen taking a break whilst engaged in Day Tour work circa 1980, though I can't remember the location.

Buses in Malta's neighbouring island of Gozo carry variations on this tasteful grey maroon and white livery, and IMHO, very smart they look too. Here an ex UK Bedford YRQ descends the main street in the capital Victoria (aka Rabat) after a downpour. Whilst the bodywork appears pretty original, it's clear even from this shot that the mechanical bits have received some modifications. Ten stud axles have replaced the former eight stud ones normally found on 10m Bedfords.

In a scene which was repeated all over the country in the seventies and eighties a high floor coach wanders through a sleepy village working an irregular bus service. The coach is a favourite of the contemporary independent, a Plaxton Panorama Elite bodied Bedford YRQ. In this case the village is Newlyn East, Cornwall, I can't recall the name of the operator, I think it was something like Trevellyn or Tremaine, the coach, NRL 152M, carries a 'slipboard' with the destination Truro in the windscreen. Although it appears that disaster was imminent for the lad on the bike, I have to report that he survived!

I only ever visited the Hereford premises of Yeoman Motors on one occasion, and found it to be a bastion of the Bedford marque. Like many other common place British buses, I only ever seemed to become interested in them as they began to fade from the scene. My faith in Bedfords had taken a severe bashing when we'd tried to use them turn about with Leylands, AECs and Daimlers back in the late 70s and 1980s. That said, many a company did get good service from them, I guess it was a matter of not letting them get out of their depth or knowing their limitations.

I've never really known what the enigmatic 'Canyon Travel' in the Yeoman's name was all about, perhaps some corruption of Canon Pyon from where I believe the business originated maybe? Here, PGR 619N is the subject and is a mid engined Bedford YRT which started life with famous North Eastern independent, Jolly of South Hylton. The style of Willowbrook body paid homage to the superb BET federation style, but didn't quite make it! This slightly cheaper build was the staple diet of many an independent requiring a 'lightweight' service bus. The Wadham Stinger Bedford to the left appears to have some issue with it's bumper, requiring it to be affixed with packing band.

The other long term player independent wise serving Yeovil was Wake's of Sparkford, a village to the north east. Whilst their buses were relatively youthful at the time of my visits and well presented, all the ones I ever came across were Bedfords. Naturally as time has gone by, I wished I'd taken more of this classic British builder's products, but at the time, the camera was only raised grudgingly to any 'lightweight'. PYB 743L, a Bedford YRT, exemplifies the typical standard design of Willowbrook bodywork so often fitted to such lighter duty chassis if the operator wasn't specifying a 'Grant Coach'.

The picture was of course taken on Yeovil bus station, the other bus is a Hutchings & Cornelius Bristol LH / ECW.

Another photo to help blow away the myth that I never photographed 'lightweights'! This one looked so tidy, that even I couldn't resist it. The little Plaxton Panorama Elite bodied Bedford YRQ belonged to the unusually titled NCB motors of Wem, Shropshire... who were nothing to do with the Coal Board. I'm not quite sure as to what kind of work the coach was engaged on at the time, but the picture was taken on a market day at Market Drayton, Shropshire in 1986, by which time coaches like JJU 462N were becoming the exception rather than the rule.

Back at the Cross Gates garage on our same day out was this Bedford YRQ Duple Viceroy PEW 799K. By now, my phobia of photographing 'lightweight' PSVs was under control after counselling from 'berresfordsmotors', and the realization that the genre as we knew it was in retreat. Suddenly, for that's how it seemed, these types which had formerly been everywhere, were almost nowhere to be seen. That said, whilst I really liked the facelifted Viceroy's 'big brother', the Commander IV, it's only now that I grudgingly feel an acceptance of it.

A few years ago, I occasionally made the journey from Stoke on Trent to Annfield Plain to collect buses from North Eastern Bus Sales. Sometimes this was train to Durham, then service buses with a change at Stanley. The latter's bus station was for the time, an interesting place to spend the odd half hour, though like most other places, the number of 'independents' was diminishing. Diamond of Stanley had not long since ceased, but here a Bedford YRT, RUP 906M, belonging to Hunter's of Tantobie is seen departing. It's Duple Dominant 1 Express coach body has been updated by the addition of a later Dominant IV lower front panel.

I've often had cause to ponder, that if Mrs 'R' were a coach... she'd be a Dominant 1 :-)

Yeomans of Hereford were a long standing Bedford operator, from memory, they kept the faith for as long as the marque was available. Here, one of the final Bedford chassis types, a YNT with turbocharged 'Blue Series' 8.2 litre engine trundles through the centre of Hereford. HCJ 909X carries a Duple Dominant Bus body.

Mechanically based on the Morris 12:4 the Y Series van and light truck were introduced in 1940, powered by a 1547cc 12 HP engine, with postwar production limited to the van variant. A larger, longer wheelbase bespoke Ambulance version of the Y series was produced during the war years powered by an 1800cc 14 hp engine

The owner of this Y series van, also has a Morris Z Series van and an Austin K8 all in Pink Parrafin livery.

Alladin Pink Parrafin

Aladdin initially made lamps, but also produced heaters and vacuum ware and marketed paraffin, called "Aladdin Pink". Aladdin worked with Shell to market 'Aladdin Pink' Paraffin (kerosene).

When I came across this neg. whilst scanning tonight, I can recall what would have been going through my head at the time. Wishing that the coach was something other than a Bedford, but really wanting to take it's picture, I would have been desperately looking for something to add to the shot to make it more worthwhile, it would have to be a bit more than a bus portrait. Fortuitously the pub sign came to my rescue, along with the generally pretty surroundings in the town of Holt, Norfolk. What caught my eye was the Peckett 0-6-0 saddle tank, moreover, the fact that it was unusually portrayed on a road-going low loader.

The Duple Dominant II bodied Bedford YMT coach, BIL 8949, belonged I think to Sanders Coaches of the same town, and is about to work a service journey to Cromer.

I really can't imagine why I took this shot at the time, as it didn't fit into any of my fairly narrow minded interest categories. It was a 'lightweight' Bedford Chassis, with a 'foreign' body and an operator I'd no knowledge of. However looking back at this pic of Moseley (Caetano) Estoril II bodied Bedford YMT, SUT 404R, I'm sort of glad that I did. Strangely, it's not wholly for the coach, but the incidental inclusion of Hanley's railway station (the white painted buildings to the rear of the bus) These have long since been demolished and are now under the extension of the 'Grand Hotel's car park. The station, closed as part of the Beeching cull, was on the NSR 'Loop Line', the tracks and platforms were in a deep and sharply curving cutting below road level. The aforementioned curvature was a factor which precluded the use of most 'modern' coaching stock from using the line, possibly a contributory factor in the decision to close. Strange as it may seem to an outsider, Hanley is actually commercially considered to be Stoke on Trent City Centre!

Having recently been acquainted with the local name for this Devon hillside bus terminus by fellow Flickrites in comments a couple of postings ago, I felt compelled to use it! 'Banjo' is such an apt description of it's shape and almost has comedic overtones.

By way of a link to another recent up-load, here's a Dominant bus in the ownership of (Burton's) Brixham Coaches who operated a service between their home town and here until not so long ago. The bodywork of VOD 545S is mounted on a Bedford YMT chassis here, the livery was dark green and cream.

Note ye scoffers who claim that I never took pictures of 'lightweights' ... here's another!

Usually my postings follow some kind of mental thread known only to me. There is a connection which links the last two postings with this one, rather than coming clean now, It will be interesting to see if anyone else knows what it is. In this shot we can see a new Duple Dominant Bus bodied Bedford YLQ JKG 32W belonging to South Wales based operator Bebb's. It's negotiating Taff Ely (Corporation) buses, and road works in central Pontypridd in the early eighties.
