This dev board is something close to my heart, as it was my first industry placement at uni, and the people at Xilinx's Edinburgh office were like a big family (they were an acquired start-up) who looked after me as I took my first steps into a wider world. This was the dev board they gave me when I left so I could continue to use it for my final year project.
I took this as part of my 365, and used a different shot at the time, but I stand my my comments then that the thrifty fifty and the digital rebel caught a nice sharp image. I got a little stick from my former colleagues at the time as the focus was not on the chip that we worked on, but rather the more conventional Xilinx chip that was there as a supporting device. I made sure to post one with the focus on our chip this time :)
This is from the Cyclo X competition at Xilinx this last Saturday! More are over here on my site ==> shotwilliam.smugmug.com/Cycling/2014-Cyclo-X-Xilinx/
Citywest is the name of a business park and neighbouring golf resort just north and northwest of Saggart in County Dublin. The nearest major town is Tallaght. The business park has developed a small residential population in recent years.
The River Camac passes north of the business park, and two of its tributaries pass through it.
Over the years several major businesses moved to the business park, notably Eircom, mobile operator Meteor, and Independent News and Media, and branch offices of Xilinx, Unilever, Pfizer, SAP and Roche.

Citywest is a business park and golf resort in the Saggart area, just north and northwest of Saggart village in South Dublin. The nearest major town is Tallaght. The business park has developed a modest residential population in recent years. The River Camac passes north of the business park, and two of its tributaries pass through it.
Originally a greenfield site north of Saggart village, west of Tallaght, and largely south of the Naas dual carriageway (now the M7 / N7), the combined Citywest concepts were launched by Irish construction firm Davy Holdings, who began building of the business park in the early 1990s, and Jim Mansfield, who drove the hotel and leisure aspects.
A substantial golf course, for a time Citywest and Hibernian Golf Club, now just Citywest Golf Resort, was laid-out. The large Citywest Hotel, with over 1,700 rooms, was built adjacent to this. The hotel, golf resort and related developments were placed in receivership in mid-2010.
Following the opening of the original business park the N82 National road joining the N81 to the Naas dual carriageway was re-routed through the campus. It previously passed through the village of Saggart itself.

Originally a landed property known as Tassaggart, located north of Saggart village, well to the west of Tallaght, and largely south of what became the Naas dual carriageway (now the M7 / N7), the Citywest concept was launched by Irish construction firm Davy Holdings, who began building the business park in the early 1990s, and Jim Mansfield, who managed the hotel and leisure aspects of the project. They then named the modern developments Citywest.

The extension of the Luas Red Line Luas to Saggart opened on Saturday 2nd July with five new Luas stops at Fettercairn, Cheeverstown, Citywest Campus, Fortunestown and Saggart. It was my intention to visit all the new stops on Saturday but I ended up photographing the Pro-Life rally in the City Centre.
On Monday (June 4) I visited Cheeverstown and Citywest Campus. For some strange reason I was expecting the Campus to be a horrible place but it turned out to be a rather pleasant.

This is a flash cart for the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Copy over your legal (ahem) ROMs of your favourite games. It’s old school retro fun on the original hardware the way it was intended- no stupid emulation. It’s not perfect I found out the hard way that it does not does not work in Australian PAL toploaders (these are uncommon) and there are games that are nor supported. However the concept is unreal, instead of pulling out cartridge and generally messing about leave this one cart in with every game you own on it and just get on with playing.

A little inside joke for FPGA engineers/designers (this is an obvious clue about what my profession is).
Inside the Electron Analog Four 4 voice analog synthesizer.
There's a Xilinx Spartan FPGA at the bottom.
www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/data_sheets/ds160.pdf
It's probably what's controlling the parameters for the analog voices, or it's the effects processor. Whatever it's doing, it has a number of lines connected to the analog voices.
Also a cirrus logic codec at the center left. I believe it's aCS42435 variant.
And here is my flash cart for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Again copy over your legal (ahem) ROMs of your favourite games to the Compact Flash card (CF card) and insert into your SNES. Then pick the game from the menu, enter a Game Genie code (if you are a dirty, dirty cheater or just stuck on a bit) or not and way we go.
Most SNES games will work. A handful of carts that used additional enhancement or expansion chips don’t.
I had an “FPGA error 20” shortly after receiving the cart and had to return it for repair / replacement. The process took a long time but it was done.

This is a quick and dirty demo of my video synthesizer. It is basically an FPGA board connected to an old CRT display. It is meant for live performance. The images were recorded using a webcam. No fancy effects or editing, just cut and paste.
The synthesizer's inputs are:
-4 switches
-4 push buttons
-1 knob
-1 keyboard
These are used to control the color, size, rotation and complexity of the polygons.
Output:
-640x480 @ 60Hz, 8-color VGA
Yes, eight fabulous colors.
How does it work?
It basically renders a wire frame model. The vertices of the model can be moved around using the keyboard. You don't really have much control over the shape. The keyboard is sort of a "random data source", which means the user just bashes the keyboard like a monkey until something pretty shows up on the screen ;). More precise controls could be easily implemented, but I am happy with them as they are now.
Having a cheap webcam to "post-process" the video is very important. It is the key overcome the 8-color limitation imposed by the FPGA board. The digital-to-analog-to-digital conversion process helps to soften the colors, and makes the resultant images look better. The colored dots you see are actually the phosphor sub-pixels of the CRT display. The camera I used was a Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000.
The actual digital circuit that's the core of the synthesizer started out as a school project. It took me about 3 weeks to develop. Then I modified it so I could have more control over the image, and to make sure there were glitches everywhere :).

The setup on my desk for testing and developing the firmware and Verilog for my FPGA-accelerated vision platform.
Pictured:
- my MT9V032 LVDS camera board
- a Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA SP605 board.
As of this photo, I've successfully developed the code that allows the Spartan-6 to deserialize the MT9V032's 300+ Mbps LVDS data stream - I use the FPGA's SerDes blocks to perform the deserialization, rather than relying on an external deserializer chip (as suggested in the image sensor's data sheet).
That little green LED on the FMC-LPC board (should you actually be able to see it) indicates that the FPGA has successfully locked to the MT9V032's output. Remarkably, it worked on the first try (no doubt thanks to simulating everything beforehand! - some simulation waveforms are just barely visible on my monitor in the upper right).
Next step: actually sending the video data somewhere to confirm that the sensor is really truly working (good thing the SP605 has a DVI output..).

Assembled NES Cartridge Adapter board. Also stenciled and reflowed.
Next step: actually get a NES cartridge connector for the board. And some game cartridges, even. Then: try it with my FPGA NES!
A board for interfacing a Nintendo game cartridge to any board supporting the Gadget Factory "wing" header (e.g. the Papilio One or the OpenBench Logic Sniffer).
This is meant for testing my FPGA NES with real game cartridges.
The board uses a Xilinx XC9572 CPLD to perform level-shifting (the NES cartridges are nominally 5V devices) and signal multiplexing (~50 relatively slow signals are muxed down to fit over a 16-bit interface). An IDT QuickSwitch protects the off-board FPGA from the 5V levels driven by the CPLD.
Some jumpers are provided to experiment with running the cartridge at lower voltage levels. Ideally, we'd like to drive just 3.3V signal levels to the cartridge, since CPLDs/FPGAs capable of 5V output are growing increasingly rare.
