Die Ziesel (Spermophilus, Syn.: Citellus) sind eine Gattung der Erdhörnchen, die in Eurasien in 15 Arten verbreitet ist. Dabei umfasste die Gattung lange Zeit deutlich mehr Arten, die auch in Nordamerika vorkommen; diese wurden jedoch nach einer Revision auf der Basis morphologischer und molekularbiologischer Daten in insgesamt acht Gattungen aufgeteilt.

The European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus), also known as the European souslik, is a species from the squirrel family, Sciuridae.[2] It is among the few European species in the genus Spermophilus. Like all squirrels, it is a member of the rodent order. It is to be found in eastern Europe from southern Ukraine, to Asia Minor, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and north as far as Poland but the range is divided in two parts by the Carpathian Mountains.

Located in El Bierzo, in the northwest of the Aquilanos Mountains, and next to the Valley of the Sil River, The Médulas is an outstanding Spanish landscape complex that came to be as a result of Roman gold mining works.
Thought of as the greatest over ground gold mine of the entire Roman Empire, the engineering process that was took place in the complex in order to extract the gold took a considerable toll on the environment of the area. As a result of these actions, an odd but outstanding landscape of red sand under chestnut and oak trees appeared.
The latter land movements created artificial plains that now work as access paths for other areas such as the Carucedo Lake, which is a valley that appeared when the lake was clogged due to the residues from the mine, considered protected wetland.
This area was declared “Cultural Heritage” in 1996 due to its archeological interest. In the year 1997, UNESCO declared the site World Heritage, in 2002 it was granted the title of “National Monument” and in the year 2012 the award of “Cultural Space”.
As an interesting fact, it is important to mention that Thailand’s Delegation was against the decision of declaring “Las Médulas” a Human Heritage. In their eyes, the site was caused by human-made destruction, and was therefore a prejudice to the environmental protection cause. Germany and Finland agreed with Thailand.

Situadas en El Bierzo, al noroeste de los Montes Aquilanos y al lado del Valle del río Sil, Las Médulas son un impresionante entorno paisajístico español formado como resultado de las explotaciones auríferas romanas.
Considerada la mayor mina de oro a cielo abierto de todo el Imperio Romano, el trabajo de ingeniería que se realizó para extraer el oro alteró considerablemente el medio ambiente de la zona, dando como resultado un inusual paisaje de arenas rojizas cubierto de castaños y robles.
Los grandes movimientos de tierra que se sucedieron conformaron llanuras artificiales que sirven como vías de acceso a otras zonas como el Lago Carucedo, formado a su vez por el taponamiento de un valle con los residuos de la mina, y considerado humedal protegido.
Las Médulas son Patrimonio de la Humanidad
Este entorno fue declarado “Bien de Interés Cultural” en el año 1996 debido a su interés arqueológico. En el año 1997 la Unesco lo declaró Patrimonio de la Humanidad, en el año 2002 se le galardonó con el título de “Monumento Natural” y en el año 2010 “Espacio Cultural”.
Como anécdota destacar el hecho de que la delegación de Tailandia se opuso a la decisión de nombrar “Las Médulas” patrimonio de la humanidad al considerar que el paraje era el resultado de la actividad destructora del ser humano y suponía un perjuicio para la causa de la protección medioambiental. Alemania y Finlandia estuvieron de acuerdo con esta opinión.
