This message was an essential reminder on this day.
I’ve appreciated learning about leather work and growing in this skill and in my own character through this work. During this process I used a piece of scrap leather and created a bracelet for myself and I intuitively stamped the meaning of my name, Amanda: “worthy of love,” into the leather—a concept I’ve really struggled a lot to believe all my life and instead believed the opposite about myself. It was very meaningful for me to work on making this. To me it was a beautiful story that this unevenly cut “scrap” of leather that some people would consider useless and needing to be discarded has beauty, purpose and meaning—like a work of “art” that shows me a beautiful reminder: I have purpose, meaning and I am worthy of love. I thought it was interesting that I quickly became accustomed to having this bracelet on my wrist. When I took it off to keep it dry while my hands were in water it seemed like something was missing and later when I put it back on I could feel it around my wrist. It was like this reminder that I am worthy of love was gently “holding on” to my wrist in freedom which seemed like a pleasant thing. I created this bracelet back on September 17th and have worn it almost constantly every day since then. It’s a beautiful reminder and I love how the vegetable tanned leather has naturally turned from nearly white to a darker brown with regular wear and use which shows unique character and my own beautiful story.

As a way to cope with circumstances beyond my control, survive and work to keep fighting for life I decided to try to take at least one photo (or more) each day. I call this “a photo (or more) a day.” Practicing this form of therapeutic photography helps me work to focus on the present moment, gives me something familiar and enjoyable to focus on as I use photography skills that have become like second-nature to me and being able to view the images I capture helps me recall what I was thinking, feeling and noticing at the moment when I created the photos. I may not always have the energy, time or capacity to share photos from this series—especially with the very challenging circumstances my family and I are experiencing—and will do my best to continue taking a photo (or more) a day even if I’m not able to share.
