Members of the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from Shilo, Manitoba and 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines from Hawaii, United States practice the fast rope insertion extraction system with a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii, on July 2 2012.
1,400 Canadian sailors, soldiers, and airmen and airwomen participate in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2012 combined and joint exercise, taking place near the Hawaiian Islands from June 29 to August 3. Scheduled and coordinated by the U.S. Navy Third Fleet, RIMPAC also offers Canada the senior members of the Canadian Forces the opportunity to assume positions of leadership, further enhancing Canadaâs ability to work with other nations of the Asia-Pacific region. RIMPAC 2012 involves forces from Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) is the worldâs largest international maritime exercise, designed to prepare military forces to work together in missions ranging from providing humanitarian aide to full combat operations. RIMPAC began as an annual exercise in 1971 and since 1974 has been scheduled every other year. The endurance of exercise demonstrates the value of bringing international forces together to train and improve their ability to operate in a joint and combined multi-national force environment. Canada, along with only Australia and the United States, has participated in RIMPAC since its inception.

NETWORK BUSINESSWOMAN (New Business) OF THE YEAR
Julia McAndrew â Network Galway
Julia McAndrew is a mother and an established business woman which involves a lot of travel. She saw at first hand the need for Compleat Travel Essentials Packs â specially prepared packs that contain essential toiletries for those flying and travelling a lot.
She spent a lot of time sourcing and trying out products before she found the quality of the products she was looking for, for example the wipes are organic & bio-degradable, the deodorant is natural and endorsed by the cancer treatment centre and the shaving cream is for the most sensitive skin, 3 in 1, pre, post and shave, needing no water for the best shave ever. Due to customer feedback sheâs now launching a unisex pack and a pack for children.
Now over 4,000 customers worldwide choose Compleat Travel Essential packs to feel fresh and clean no matter where they are. Compleat Travel Essentials Packs are now selling in Hotels, Pharmacies, Hospital Shops, WH Smith and Airport shops. She is already in talks with companies in the UK and the European Airports.

1,400 Canadian sailors, soldiers, and airmen and airwomen participate in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2012 combined and joint exercise taking place near the Hawaiian Islands from June 29 to August 3.

How are Western firms shifting their global footprints, including those inside the worldâs second-largest economy? How can companies respond to local traits of key demographics, such as millennials or retirees? What approaches are working in this new global age?

There, Tali visited communities that have already benefited from Christian Aid funds and heard how war torn communities, who faced a daily battle

against malnutrition after the multinational food companies fled during the war, were left with no tools or equipment to farm.
Tali said: âThis was the first time I got to see how small changes can transform lives in such a big way. People are being provided with the kinds of things we in the UK would take for granted. The country has so much potential. They just need the right tools, and thatâs where the donations have been so vital.â
This year there is an even greater focus on fundraising as the first £5million donated to Christian Aid Week 2012 will be matched by the Government pound for pound, allowing the charity to help more people in poor communities around the world work their way out of poverty.
Karen Lobo-Morell, Christian Aid, said: âItâs fantastic to have so many stars using their creative talents to support Christian Aid Week. Buying a watering can decorated by Lemar or a pair of wellies customised by Katherine Hamnett will mean people can not only own a great one-off, but will be helping poor communities around the world. Millions of people rely on subsistence agriculture to feed their families and they just want to be given the tools to work their way out of poverty. We want as many people as possible to come down to the shop and check out what our stars have created.â

The blacksmith belong to one of the lowest casts in India, like the guys who do the washing and the people who clean the roads or the toilets
The practice of âuntouchabilityâ was abolished in 1950, however castes still remain in India, this system was born 2 000 years ago and is tied with the religion of Hinduism, so it is not going down easy; India has one of the worldâs largest democracies, but the Dalits (untouchables) do not generally feel that they are really enjoying it; there are four large castes categories in India, the Brahmins (priests and teachers), the Ksyatriyas (rulers and soldiers), the Vaisyas (merchants and traders), the Shudras (labourers and artisans); the fifth category is considered outcasts, untouchables or Dalits, they were traditionally not allowed to wear moustaches; in South India, eight out of ten males wear moustaches; the trend is attributed to films, It says that famous north Indian actors never sported a moustache, their South Indian counterparts like having always done otherwise; in Hindi films, it was usually the bad guys who had a moustache, while in South Indian movies everyone had one, on the other hand, even TV serial actors in South India wear the moustache

Pictured: A soldier from 34 Field Hospital delivers a reading during the thanksgiving service inside York Minster.
Hundreds of people gathered to welcome back the military medics from the world-famous military field hospital in Afghanistan as they paraded through York on Saturday.
Members of the UK Medical Group 20 - including 34 Field Hospital based in Strensall - returned from Afghanistan last month where they closed down the field hospital in Camp Bastion.
The operational tour was described by their Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jaish Mahan as an âhistoric storyâ where the staff pushed boundaries to save lives.
âTo have been part of it has been both hugely rewarding and challenging for those involved in it,â said Lieutenant Colonel Mahan who commanded both the UK Medical Group and 34 Field Hospital.
âRewarding and challenging for the same reasons because it involves people and some peopleâs lives have been changed forever by their injuries and experiences. Afghanistan has seen incredibly humbling feats of courage by those injured, paralleled only by the unfaltering determination of the medical staff committed to saving them - constantly pushing the boundaries and not taking âNoâ for an answer.â
Over 200 medics from 65 units in all three Armed Forces attended a Thanksgiving Service in York Minster. The contingent included Lieutenant Colonel Eric Newland, Officer in Charge of 31st Combined Support Hospital who represented the 55 US military personnel.
Following the service, the military medics paraded on Duncombe Place where they and the hundreds of onlookers were addressed by both Lieutenant Colonel Mahan and the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Ian Gillies.
âThis has not only been about looking after our own,â said Lt Col Mahan
âIn the last few years, we have mentored and developed a trauma hospital in Helmand for our Afghan National Army Colleagues - a hospital, that when we left, was seeing the full spectrum of trauma casualties. This is an incredible achievement and a legacy for the Afghan people we can be extremely proud of not only as a medical group but as a country.â
The Lord Mayor said that 34 Field Hospital was the first hospital in both Iraq and Afghanistan and had also overseen the closure of the Role 3 hospital in Camp Bastion.
âThe deployments saw them operating in what is widely regarded as the leading trauma centre in the world which, at its busiest times involved the treatment of up to 250 trauma casualties per week of varying complexities and from a multitude of nationalities, further cementing its reputation across Defence as a whole and in the multi-national medical arena,â said Councillor Gillies
âWe are delighted to now have them safe and sound back home for the present.â
The medics were inspected by the Lord Mayor Director General of the Army Medical Services, Major General Jeremy Rowan OBE QHS and 80 Operational Service medals were presented
Led by the Band of the Royal Armoured Corps, the parade then marched down Parliament Street and returned to Duncombe Place via Coney Street where the salute was taken by Major General Rowan and the Lord Mayor of York on the steps of the Mansion House.
Camp Bastionâs Role 3 hospital provided care for injured personnel that was so advanced that over the eight years it was in operation it became one of the worldâs leading trauma care facilities.
Its 300 doctors nurses and support staff saw 14,000 patients during those eight years evacuating a total of 6,500 cases to Camp Bastion by the Chinook helicopterâs medical Emergency Response Team and 450 personnel to the UK by the Critical Care Air Support Team. Opened in 2006, the Role 3 hospital dealt with a total of 39,000 CT scans, 50,000 X-rays and transfused 15,500 litres of blood to 2,600 trauma patients.
âTo have been in that emotional crucible, if only for a while, is an honour and we as a Med Group are now forever part of that story - a story that is embedded not only on the hearts of our military personnel, but also the hearts of our Nation,â said Lieutenant Colonel Mahan.
He said that this was a final chapter in an incredible journey and that the troops on parade were representing the hundreds in the medical group that had gone before them.
âToday has been a real honour and a privilege to march through the city of York. We have had an incredibly warm reception and we have been touched by the emotion expressed to us by the people of York.â

Tasting Britain was back at Salvatoreâs Bar in The Playboy Club for the launch/relaunch/reprint of Salvatoreâs Calabrese âClassic Cocktails; (which has apparently sold over a million copies to date). As you can imagine, the book is a combination of cocktail recipe and cocktail history, and is pretty comprehensive on both counts (I have a copy). So yeah, if youâre a âbarflyâ or someone who with a more than casual interest in bars, bartending and cocktails, you may have heard of Salvatore Calabrese and his creations. You may have read an earlier print of the book. You may have even tried a few of his cocktails for yourself. And if you haven't, allow me to tell you about Salvatoreâs Bar and the exciting things to be found within...
Asides from its famous namesake, Salvatoreâs Bar might be best known for itâs somewhat ludicrous collection of rare spirits (and particularly its rare cognacs), proudly displayed in the barâs âliquid historyâ wall. Some of these drinks date back to the 1700s, and the collection is generally acknowledged as one of the worldâs best. The great news? You can drink them! The not great news? A cocktail made from one of these bottles could set you back as much as £2000 (or more) a pop! So, those who lack nigh-unlimited money to burn on drinking stuff that probably shouldnât exist anymore can simply admire these ancient bottles instead (and believe me, I did).
The Playboy Club itself was relaunched in 2011, I believe in an attempt to 'recapture the spirit' of their 1960s heyday. I canât tell you what it was like in the 60s, but I CAN tell you that it has certainly recaptured something. Upstairs is the memberâs area (no, I am not a member). Having only spent a brief time there (doing ârecon') Here you shall find The Casino (Bunny croupiers) and âPlayers Barâ, plus the Dining Room restaurant (of which I have now tried much of the food in canapé form and can say is pretty promising). Another thing that is worth talking about (briefly) are the iconic bunny girls. To be fair, bunny girls are just 'normal girlsâ (whatever that means) dressed up sexy, and with fluffy tails - but, like the pyramids of Giza and Shibuya at night, you have to see them before you die. See them a few times if so inclined.
For those interested, thatâs Salvatore in the pictures making a negroni out of bottles that date back the 1950s. Asides from making a statement about the fact that these guys actually HAVE bottles this old in their stock, this was, supposedly, the age when the cocktail culture really started to take off again - though I think the original recipe was. I like a negroni now and then but hoooooooly shit this was a showstopper. For reasons I canât quite explain it seemed to have taken on some of the flavours (Iâll spare you the details) that youâd get in an aged Madeira. As for the pictures of the cocktails in strange glasses, these are all new ones from the barâs new âAround The Worldâ cocktail menu. Having had the chance to try a few of these Iâd say the best (so far) is the âLady Sakuraâ (from Japan) - just sake, sencha liqueur and yuzu. Amazing!

Stars dig deep for Christian Aid Week
David Shrigley, Tali Lennox, Alan Titchmarsh and TOWIEâs Lydia Bright are among a host of famous names who have used their creative talents to support this yearâs Christian Aid Week. Over 15 stars have customised gardening tools, which will be displayed in a Soho pop-up shop from 14 â 19 May and auctioned at www.ebay.co.uk/christianaid.
The theme of the fundraising week is âgive the tools to help people in poverty out of povertyâ, and Christian Aid is hoping the celebrity decorated tools will raise vital funds for its work in countries such as Sierra Leone. The shop at 63 Broadwick Street, adjacent to Carnaby Street, will be open from 10 â 7pm daily to give the public a chance to view these unique items, which range from watering cans and gardening gloves to wellies and herb pots.
The one-off celebrity items that will be up for auction include:

One of the stars involved is young British model, Tali Lennox. Daughter of singer and humanitarian, Annie Lennox, Tali is no stranger to charity work. She recently travelled to Sierra Leone, one of the worldâs poorest countries where around half the population depend on agriculture, as a Christian Aid Week ambassador.

To donate to Christian Aid Week, give online at www.caweek.org, call 08080 006 006 or text âGIVEâ to 78866 to give £5.
Christian Aid would like to thank Shaftsbury Estate for the kind donation of the shop, Hunter for donating the boots decorated by Katharine Hamnett and David Shrigley, Next Model Management and eBay for support with the special auction.

Amazing!

Pictured: Lieutenant Colonel Jaish Mahan (sic) delivers a prayer during the Thanksgiving Ceremony in York Minster.

As the rising sun clears away the shadows of the previous night over the island of Camiguin, an imposing silhouette of a large cross stands guard over the location of the old capital of the island. Due to a fatal volcanic eruption of Mount Vulcan, the sea now hides the old capital, which was founded during the Spanish era.
According to local historians, Mount Vulcan had four historic eruptions. The first one was in 1827 but records of this eruption were nil. The second one was in 1862 when thick ashes from the crater flowed and overtook people who were fleeing towards the sea, resulting in 326 fatalities. The third one started in 1871. Previous experience had taught some of the Camiguin people of the dangerous whims of Mount Vulcan. Thus, when earthquakes were felt, they fled as far away as possible from the volcano, but some stayed behind. There were spasmodic eruptions and the people who fled decided to stay away until the time when the volcano finally subsided in 1875. But when they returned, they have lost their land and their friends.
The whole capital of Camiguin, with its cemetery, sunk under the sea. In the following years, the sunken land and the gravestones can still be seen when the tide is low. But in 1948 until 1953, Mount Vulcan erupted again, sinking the whole area deeper, to around twenty feet. In 1982, a large cross was built on the solidified lava to mark the site that became the graves of the ancestors of the Camiguin people. It has become a sunken cemetery. Now, it is one of the world’s most unique diving sites. Source: www.philippinesvacation.org/camiguin/camiguin-sunken-ceme...

Istanbul Istanbul, a novel by Burhan Sönmez and translated from Turkish by Ãmit Hussein, has won a new international literature prize launched by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The prize, awarded at a ceremony at the Bankâs headquarters in London on 10 April, was created last year by the EBRD, in partnership with the British Council and the London Book Fair (LBF).
The â¬20,000 prize will be split between the author and translator.
The EBRD Literature Prize champions the literary richness of its regions of operations, which include almost 40 countries from Morocco to Mongolia, Estonia to Egypt. It was also created to illustrate the importance of literary translation and to introduce the depth and variety of the voices and creativity from these regions to a wider global audience.
Set after a military coup, the winning novel is a love song to Istanbul inspired by the authorâs own experiences. Below the ancient streets of Istanbul, four prisoners sit, awaiting their turn at the hands of their interrogators. When they are not being subjected to unimaginable violence, the condemned tell one another stories about the city, shaded with love and humour, to pass the time. In a style that resembles Giovanni Boccaccioâs 14th-century classic The Decameron, the prisonersâ narratives slowly turn into a story of the city itself, increasingly blurring the line between life above and below ground.
Rosie Goldsmith, chair of the judging panel, said: âIstanbul Istanbul is a life-affirming novel of profound humanity and exquisite writing. And Burhan Sönmez is a major writer, a highly deserving winner of this major new prize. Yes, the novel is set in a prison cell, yes, itâs set in Turkey, but at no point does it condemn or take a position: itâs our story too. The four protagonists are on a quest to find kindness and beauty in a world of cruelty. They are fully rounded, real characters with flaws and oddities, gripping us not with accounts of violence and torture but through their humour and conversation. Burhan Sönmez wears his immense learning lightly and together with his literary companion UÌmit Hussein, his outstanding translator, they have created a prize-winning novel of great passion and poetry.â
Suma Chakrabarti, President of the EBRD, said: âThrough the EBRD Literature Prize, we recognise the work of scores of authors across the nearly 40 countries where the Bank works â most of whose voices would have remained unheard had it not been for the translators and publishers who bring these works to the English-speaking world. But our prize is meant to go beyond recognition. It is meant to promote the wealth, depth and variety of culture and history in the countries where the EBRD invests.â
Burhan Sönmez is an internationally prize-winning novelist who worked as a human rights lawyer in Istanbul and was a founder of the social-activist culture organisation TAKSAV (Foundation for Social Research, Culture and Art). Sönmez is a member of Turkish PEN and English PEN. He is a founding member of the 'Writers Circle' at PEN International and currently lectures in Literature and Novel at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara.
Ãmit Hussein is a British translator and interpreter of Turkish Cypriot origin. She has translated the work of Nevin Halıcı, Mehmet Yashin and Ahmet Altan, among others.
The two runner-up titles received â¬2,000, also split between author and translator. These were All the Worldâs a Stage by Boris Akunin, translated from Russian by Andrew Bromfield, and Belladonna by DaÅ¡a Drndic, translated from Croatian by Celia Hawkesworth. All were present at the award ceremony, where the three finalist authors and translators discussed their books and the art of translation.
These titles were chosen from the original longlist of 12 titles by the judges.
A special event will also be held at the London Book Fair at 11.30 on 11 April 2018. Entitled âWhose Prize is it Anyway?â, featuring the prize winners and the judges, the panel will be discussing the benefit of literary prizes, the need to read more literature in translation and the role the EBRD Literature Prize plays in the current international cultural arena. This year the LBF market focus is on the Baltic states, one of the EBRD regions of operations.
See all information/announcements of the EBRD Literature Prize.
About the EBRD Literature Prize:
The prize provides a unique opportunity to reflect the culture and creativity of almost 40 economies where the Bank invests, from Morocco to Mongolia, Estonia to Egypt. The prize is awarded to the best work of literary fiction translated from the original language into English and published by a UK publisher in the 18 months prior to 15 November 2017. Divided equally between author and translator, it champions the art of translation as well as the extraordinary richness, depth and variety of arts and history in the countries in the Bankâs region. The EBRD Literature Prize is a project of the Bankâs Community Initiative.
About the EBRD:
The EBRD was set up in 1991 after the fall of the Berlin Wall to meet the challenge of an extraordinary moment in Europeâs history: the collapse of communism. It is a multilateral bank with almost 70 shareholders which promotes the development of the private sector and entrepreneurial initiatives in 37 economies across three continents.
About the judges:
Peter Frankopan is Professor of Global History at Oxford University. His most recent book, The Silk Roads: A New History of the World, was an international number 1 bestseller.
Gabriel Gbadamosi is a poet, playwright, essayist and broadcaster. He was a Judith E. Wilson Fellow for creative writing at Cambridge University. His London novel Vauxhall won the 2011 Tibor Jones Pageturner Prize.
Lucy Hannah is a writer and producer who founded Commonwealth Writers in 2011. She has worked for a range of organisations on communication for development projects, mostly in areas of conflict and post-conflict, including South Sudan, Chechnya and Afghanistan.
Rosie Goldsmith, chair of the judging panel, is an award-winning journalist specialising in arts and current affairs in the UK and abroad, and a champion of international literature. She is Founder and Director of the European Literature Network.

From Fluxus and performance-art pioneer and Two Virgins to chart-topping dance-music heroine (inspiring punk rock along the way!), Yoko Ono has been an innovative and influential force on music and art, while simultaneously campaigning for peace on the worldâs stage. At 76 years young, Yoko continues to kick ass â and is preparing to release Donât Stop Me!, a career-defining album made with her new Plastic Ono Band. The record is a gorgeous, mind-melting blend of styles, restating and sharpening themes while plunging into the always-mysterious future.
The sessions happened at NYCâs Sear Sound, the same studio that used to house the old Hit Factory, where Double Fantasy was recorded. Sean Lennon produced the sessions with Yoko and acted as musical leader for a group evenly divided between Japanese avant pop musicians, and downtown Manhattan improvisers. In the former category was Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto, and the current group led by Keigo âCorneliusâ Oyamada â Yuko Araki and Hirotaka Shimmy Shimizu. Ms. Ono had been so happy with a performance theyâd done together in Tokyo in January, she invited them to New York to record. In the latter category we find Shahzad Ismaily, Erik Friedlander, Michael Leonhart, Daniel Carter and Indigo Street, a group of brilliant instrumentalists.
As Sean says, âYoko unleashed a deluge of new songs, writing about 16 songs in 6 days, the most prolific day peaking out at 6 songs written and tracked in an afternoon. The recording session was like a tornado of inspiration. Some of the best lyrics on the record Yoko actually âfreestyledâ as if she were a lyrical divining rod.â
The results are pretty amazingâ¦
