I approached the beast with caution. While there was no mate in site, it is the beginning of nesting season. The leviathan paid no attention to my approach. I took my shots, then retreated hastily, never taking my eyes off the monster for fear of becoming a permanent resident of the landfill that is Tommy Thompson Park.

Thank you to Abizeleth for identifying the species for me! ;)

Taken in Tommy Thompson Park (I'm sure you figured that out already) in Toronto, Ontario.

This is the lake at North Park in the suburbs of Pittsburgh where the lake has been drained and a major aquatic ecosystem restoration project is underway. This was the first time that I'd seen the lake this way and it was somewhat disturbing. Ordinarily the lake and the surrounding park are visually appealing. However on this cold, foggy, and dreary day, with all of the construction vehicles working in the mud, ugly was on display.

Nevertheless these excavators appeared to be synchronized as they dug, lifted, turned, and dumped. I’m not sure if it was intentional but their coherent, cooperative motion persisted for more than 10 minutes. With such fluid, synchronous motion I almost expected to hear Johann Strauss' Blue Danube Waltz on a worksite radio.

The Excavator Operator has brought up a new length of pipe, without getting out of the cab he starts to sling the chain round the end of the pipe. Ready to swing it round into the lagoon.
