পাহাড়ি নারীদের জীবনের সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে রয়েছে কোমর তাঁত। নিজেদের পরিধেয় বস্ত্র নিজেরাই তৈরি করেন কোমর তাঁতের মাধ্যমে। এ কোমর তাঁতকে আবার অনেকে কিছুটা হলেও বাণিজ্যিকভাবেও নিয়েছেন। অবসর সময়ে নিজ উদ্যোগে নিজ ঘরে বসে কোমর তাঁতের মাধ্যমে বস্ত্র তৈরি করেন, যা চাহিদা অনুযায়ী বিক্রিও করা হয়।
পাহাড়ের বিভিন্ন সম্প্রদায়ের ঘরে ঘরে রয়েছে কম-বেশি কোমর তাঁত। প্রত্যেক ঘরেই নারীরা কোমর তাঁতের মাধ্যমে তৈরি করছেন নিজেদের ঐতিহ্যবাহী পোশাক। এসবের মধ্যে রয়েছে থামি, পিনন, ওড়না, রুমাল, ব্যাগসহ নানা কিছু। স্থানীয় গ্রাম এবং বাজারে এসব বিক্রি করে আয়ও করেন অনেক নারী।
Waist looms are involved in the lives of hill women. They make their own garments through waist looms. Many people have taken this waist loom commercially. In his spare time, he used to sit at home on his own initiative and make garments through loom looms, which are also sold as per the demand.
There are more or less waist looms in the houses of different communities in the hills. In every house, women are making their own traditional clothes through waist looms. These include thami, pinon, orna, handkerchief, bag and many more. Many women also earn income by selling these in local villages and markets.

চাতালকর্মীদের জীবন চাতালের গণ্ডির মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ। তাদের আলাদা কোন জীবন নেই, নেই কোন স্বপ্ন। সারাদিন হাড়ভাঙ্গা পরিশ্রম করেই তাদের জীবন যায়। নেই পর্যাপ্ত বিশ্রাম, নেই কোন বিনোদনের ব্যবস্থা। মালিকদের কাছে তারা অনেকটা দাসীর মতো। স্বল্প মজুরীতে এতো পরিশ্রমের পরো তারা তাদের সংসারে কারো মুখে হাসি ফোটাতে পারে না, ফলে তারা সবসময় মানসিকভাবে বিপর্যস্ত থাকে।
শিশু থেকে বয়স্ক নারী সব বয়সের মানুষ কাজ করে চাতালে। সারাদিনের অমানবিক পরিশ্রমের পর তাদের জীবনে বিনোদনের কিছুই নেই, তারপরও তারা হাসে, একে অপরের সাথে খুনসুটি করে। তারা জানে এটাই তাদের জীবন, এখান থেকেই তাদের আনন্দ খুঁজে নিতে হবে ।

To the Chatal owner they are much like maids. After working so hard for a low wage, they can't put a smile on anyone's face in their family, so they are always mentally depressed & upset. This is how it is passed down through the generations.
From children to older women, people of all ages work in the Chatal. There is nothing entertaining in their lives after a day of inhuman toil, yet they laugh, grumble at each other. They know this is their life, they have to find their happiness from here.
বাজারে চাউলের যোগান দিতে ঢেঁকি নির্ভরতা থেকে চাতালে ধান শুকানোর জন্য অভ্যস্থ হতে থাকে। ব্যবহার বাড়তে থাকে চাতালের। দিন যেয়ে দিন এসে ঢেঁকি বিকল হয়ে প্রচলন আসে হাসকিং মিলের। এই মিলে চাতালের ব্যপক ব্যবহার হতে থাকে। এই মিলে দেশের স্থানীয় ধনীক শ্রেনী, বড় বড় ব্যবসায়ীরা বিনিয়োগ করতে লাগলেন। দেশের আনাচে কানাচে হাসকিং মিল তৈরী হলো। চাতাল তখন মানুষের খুব কাছে পৌছে গেল। যে কারণে দেশে এখন প্রায় ৪০০ টি হাসকিং মিল আছে বলে জানা যায়। যদিও এই মিল মালিকেরা এখন এই মিলের ডিজিটাল সংস্করণ হিসেবে অটো রাইচ মিলের দিকে ঝুকছে। অনেকে হাসকিং মিলের ব্যবসা থেকে নিজেকে গুটিয়েও নিয়েছে। অটো মিলে চাতালের তেমন ব্যবহার নেই বললেই চলে। ধান থেকে চাউলের যে কারবার তা ঘরে ঘরে ঢেঁকি থেকে হাসকিং মিল এবং তা থেকে অটো রাইচ মিলে এসে ঠেকেছে। কাঠের ঢেঁকির ধান কল আজ অটো মিলে রূপান্তরীত হতে গিয়ে মিলে পরিণত হয়েছে।
হাসকিং মিল এবং চাউলের চাতালের সাথে জড়িয়ে আছে মধ্যম ও নি¤œ মধ্যম শ্রেণীর মানুষের রুটি-রুজির বিষয়টি। দেশের বিপুল সংখ্যক হতদরিদ মানুষের খাদ্য নিরাপত্তার বিষয়টি আজ জড়িয়েছে হাসকিং মিলের চাউল উৎপাদনের প্রয়োজনে। দিন বদলে হাসকিং বদলে যাচ্ছে। আসছে অটো রাইচ মিল। অটো রাইচ মিলের দাপটে মানুষ শ্রম হারাচ্ছে। আবার বিলুপ্ত হচ্ছে ঢেঁকি শিল্পের। ঘরে ঘরে এখন আর ঢেঁকি পাঁড়ের শব্দ যেমন শোনা যায় না। আবার মেয়েদের গানের সুরে সুর মিলিয়ে চাউল কোটার সংস্কৃতিও মিলে যাচ্ছে দিন দিন।
চাতালের শ্রমিকদের মধ্যে পুরুষের পাশাপাশি নারীদের সংখ্যা নিতান্তই কম নয়। তবে এখানে নারীরা পরিশ্রম বেশি করে কম মজুরী পেয়ে থাকে।

Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing merging markets in the world today. Literally millions of families of moving out of poverty and some entering the middle classes.
This has been enabled primarily by women who work and so contribute to the economy. A great example of this is the creation of the Ready to wear garments industry. Brands Like `Tesco, Zara and Miss Selfridge, to name but a few produce their garments in Bangladesh, made by womenlike this who are rushing to work.
Yes there are issue that need to be resolved like stricter application of work and safety and a higher minimum wage. But conversely, years ago, these women were idle and without income.
Today there earnings provide for a better standard of living and crucially providing their children an education.
Transformation is possible within a generation

Endlich habe ich es geschafft eines meiner Lieblingsfotos aus der Nicht-digitalen-Zeit zu digitalisieren.
Lieblingsfoto, weil manchmal einfach nur der Moment zählt. Einen Moment, den man nicht nachstellen oder wiederholen kann, der aber immer bleibt: Ausgewogen, stimmungsvoll.
Aufgenommen 2002 in Myanmar (Burma/Birma), in einer Zeit der Militärdiktatur, während dem Hausarrest von Aung San Suu Kyi. Die Militärdiktatur herrscht auch heute noch immer dort, aber das Land ist aus der völligen Isolation erwacht und Aung San Suu Kyi zumindest nach 15 Jahren aus dem Hausarrest entlassen. Ich habe es kennengelernt als Land des Lächelns, was tiefe Eindrücke hinterlassen hat. Es ist ein faszinierendes und geheimnisvolles Land mit einer liebenswürdigen Bevölkerung.
Ich erinnere mich immer an dieses Land, wenn in Deutschland Demokratiemüdigkeit einsetzt (geringe Wahlbeteiligung). Wir haben Demokratie und wissen es viel zu wenig zu schätzen.

Burma, Birma or Myanmar as it is called by the Military Junta, is a country where magnificent and ancient Buddhist temples gaze out serenely over a nation restless for change. Burma has plenty of wonders for the eye--sinuous, life-giving rivers, lush mountain forests, and intricately-drawn cities--but it can also trouble the soul. For the last 30 years, its people have been ruled by a notoriously repressive military government, the tatmadaw. But I never see so many people smiling and laughing. Its a wonderful country with wonderful people.
I always remember this country when using democracy fatigue in Germany. We have democracy and don´t appreciate it.

Working women of Bangladesh earn their livelihood through hardworking. Most of their family members depends on them. Sometimes they are the only earning member of a family. Then she has to work hard dawn to dusk.

Thank you very much for your interest in my photo ! But I really think a little bit of explanation is in order here about the green border !
When I reviewed this photo in my PC, I saw the possibility of expressing a broader meaning with the shot. You see, our national flag, which symbolizes Bangladesh, is a green rectangle with a red circle in it. So just by adding a green border I had a photo which symbolizes Bangladesh . At the same time the viewer's attention is drawn to the working lady in the photo which I wanted to represent the bulk of the working mass of the nation on whose sweat and toil, the country is driven forwards. And I dedicated this photo as a tribute to them.
I am sorry that the title was in Bengali, freely translated it would have meant almost the same thing !
