Working from a home office during the coronavirus crisis.

April 3, 2023

One loud peal of thunder and Rocko tried to crawl in my lap. I let him snuggle this time, but apparently comforting a dog during storm anxiety is not recommended.

This is my workstation space in my home office at Eleven80. Those are three 20.1 LCDs. I really love having that much monitor real estate to work with. That is a glass of Shiraz on the left. I have two matching HP dx5150 desktops powering these monitors. The two on the left are my main workstation which runs OpenSUSE 10.3. The monitor on the right is Windows XP Pro. Both desktops sit stacked behind the middle monitor creating a bit of a cabling nightmare as you can see but the cables are out of my way and not a problem. I need to improve that situation somewhat but it isn't too bad in normal use. The angle of this image is a little lower than if you were working at the computers here. Having the two units stacked works amazingly well and is decently attractive when viewed from the front. The center monitor can, at the push of a button, switch from being the second monitor for my Linux workstation to being the second monitor for my Windows workstation. The monitor on the left can, at the push of a button, switch from Linux to Solaris as there is a Sun SunBlade 100 Solaris 10 workstation located on the floor just behind it. I really appreciate having Linux, Windows and Solaris available to me at any time all in one spot. I wish that I had space for a Mac Mini as well. Our plan is to add one in the living room that will be usable with an attached television monitor that will be visible just above and to the left of these monitors. It will effectively give me all four OSs all at once from my single chair.

Sometimes a challenging day at work can look like this. Tracy’s been working hard over the last few days to get her online content lined up while doing her best to support her peers. And this on top of the general stress and worry about what’s keeping us all at home. Much of her day has been spent bouncing between her phone and her laptop as she works through a last second change with her teaching team and school administrators. While she’s been doing this from the couch, the day has been far from comfortable for her. Part of wanting to do this 365 project was to create a visual diary, to find the beauty and the stories in everyday life. What a year to pick.

This is Dominica, my wife's, home office in our apartment at Eleven80. She has recently given up having a regular desktop and moved to a pure laptop solution. She has a docking station so that hooking the laptop up and removing it is extremely simple and quick. All of her wiring is stationary while only the laptop comes and goes. She then as a full size 19 LCD monitor as a second screen when she is docked making the laptop far more useful. Those are Logitech stereo speakers beside her monitor. On the floor in the back corner is their amplifier and subwoofer unit. The sound is very good. That is an AMD swag clock in front of her monitor. She uses a wireless Logitech mouse and keyboard. On the right is a glass CTG swag candy jar. Behind the monitor is a small desk lamp pointed at the wall. This is used for backlighting which is soft and does not contribute to eye strain when working at night.

Now its time for some cable management! :)

I'm lucky enough to be allowed to work from home three days a week. Piper (7) and Lily (4) wanted to play outside so I moved to a suitable location where I could keep an eye on them.

via Instagram ift.tt/2b1XHZV Miss thing is ov-ver-it. Though I'm not sure what "it" is, she's just always sassy. 😹 repping her two-tone eyes too. So cute. Love how the rain has increased the kitty snuggles. #meow #rainyday #cleocatra #catsofinstagram #workfromhome #tabby

Like a lot of folks, I came back to Second Life recently due to COVID. Not being in an office was great at first (no pants anyone?) but not being able to do anything or see anyone was starting to weigh heavily on me. This idea spawned from the SL subreddit - a coworking space in game where folks could sandbox a little, and afk while working. It's a work in progress, but I'm hoping it'll be something great.

Mackenzie was helping collaborate with me on a blog post this morning, and was getting re-familiarized with the BASH console and Linux command-line syntax. She's a little rusty, but is getting the hang of it again.

Yay! Amazon came through for me with a shiny new track ball. There are so many monitors and keyboards on my desk due to the work from home thing, that there's not enough space to drive a mouse around without bumping into things. This will make life a bit easier

Hello! My name is Teacher Keri, and I teach online! I have taught in a variety of capacities with my church, teaching children ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years… and even some adult classes! I have loved every minute that I’ve been in the classroom with kids! I love their genuineness and energy.

I am currently working for two wonderful online companies, VIPKID and Magic Ears. Please watch the video above, and if you think you qualify as a teacher, then please use my referral links for VIPKID and Magic Ears (use referral links– they give you priority viewing over those who do not use one!).

Teaching Tips

Personality, Passion, TPR, and Props

Teaching English to children online can be fun as well as a challenge. When there is no physical classroom to manage your students, you have to be dynamic and creative in keeping your class focused and participating. This means meeting your students’ needs, whether that’s keeping your energy up or mellowing things out. Show personality, try and connect on a personal level with your students, and make your class the highlight of their long day.

TPR (total physical response) and props are critical in keeping your students engaged. TPR is using your body language to help the student know what you are saying and asking of them. Be sure to have looked through your lesson, know what you are teaching, and then search your house for those props that will make your lesson unique. Of course, not all teachers have to have extravagant amounts of props. I know many teachers who, by necessity (travel frequently) or not, use only a whiteboard and maybe some flashcards and/or a puppet (“prop minimalists”). As for myself, I find myself somewhere in the middle.

New Teacher Tip:

New teachers, don’t get stressed if it takes some time to start getting bookings and actually getting in the classroom with students. Magic Ears has been great in that I have been guaranteed bookings right after being hired. But, Magic Ears booking rate policies will keep me from being 100% booked with them until I’ve “ranked up” with them. With each improved rank, you also increase your booking rate. There are specific requirements (that they list in a public document) to be able to improve your ranking, and as far as I can tell those requirements can be met in not too long an amount of time. I hope to be in the top two rankings by this summer.

VIPKID was a different experience. I got a couple bookings right off the bat and then I would go a week or so at a time between bookings. There was no rhyme or reason as to why I was or was not booked. Now, several weeks in and approaching the end of the Chinese New Year holiday, I am starting to see a greater flow of students into my schedule. It’s nowhere near where I want it to be yet. But, I have hope that I will start to have a more consistent schedule with VIPKID as time goes on.
