4-Sub 4679 at Waterloo, 18/4/82. The tail lamp and headcode suggests the unit has arrived from Dorking. Motor brake second S10862S is nearest the camera. This carriage had initially been in unit 4283 and, in common with other units in the 4277-99 batch, it lacked the opening cab window on the off-side, meaning that the headcode stencil could only be changed by climbing across the cab using the footsteps and handrails provided. It is possible that if the unit was to return to Dorking, the driver did not bother to remove the stencil after the previous down working.
