One tree moor, on Dartmoor, Devon

... am Schwarzen Berg bei Teublitz .....

Taken two hours and ten minutes before the previous shot. Further back in my photo stream there are some LE shots taken on the same afternoon once the tide was in and on the turn. There is only one thing you do when faced with an ocean like this and that is stick your camera on a tripod and use a remote release and hang on tight to the tripod then just stand and stare. Even now I remember it vividly because not being primarily a landscape photographer and only getting shots when away on holiday I can truthfully say that I personally have never witnessed anything like this before or since........

Truly unforgettable, even if for many it is not particularly remarkable...

Thank you so much everyone for all your thoughtful, wonderful and kind comments. I cannot convey really how much your support means to me - but please believe it is possibly and most probably more than you will ever know…Sue x

Elephant seals: They're huge, loud and so ugly, they're cute. And each year, they gather on California's Central Coast for mating, birthing and molting seasons. Visitors to San Simeon can catch elephant seals there year-round, but the population grows at certain times of the year as the seals go through different phases in their life cycle. The peak months for viewing elephant seals are from October through March, when their population on San Simeon's shores can reach 17,000. So if you've planned a trip to Hearst Castle or San Luis Obispo in the fall, winter or early spring, consider dropping by San Simeon to watch the elephant seals in action.

From this point up & down 3 miles, the elephant seals estimated of 25,000 there.

So amazing to witness this, they do smell tho when you get near.

Hibiscus Dreams

by Marian Faerieland

The sweet fragrance of hibiscus

its petals soaked with dew like sparkling jewels

mingling with the tropical song of the waves dashing against the sandy shore

where my mind travels so often to

tropical birds hush to sleep the world and every living thing

but morning wakes with dew sweet hibiscus blooms

and happy dancing butterflies kiss those petals of hibiscus flowers

such ineffable beauty that takes my breath away and when I inhale

I breathe in the sweet hibiscus blooms mingling with the smell of the salty sea

with my pen to paper I describe what I see and witness in my mind's eye

oh how I wish the journeys on the wings of imagination would last forever

but sadly the all too soon end just like sweet hibiscus dreams

The small museum harbour and village of Nymindegab belong to the special places I regularly visit during my Easter vacation. Covered in spring light the location performed beautiful as ever. Nymindegab, Jylland, Denmark.

Thank you for your visit, favourites and comments!

An image from last spring in Prince Edward County - I have one week or work travel before I get a chance to head back there for a few days to check in on the migration.

Last year my visit coincided with a major push of Grosbeaks and Orioles, and they were everywhere along the shore, in flocks. I had not witnessed a landing by so many of a single species before, let alone a species that one is lucky to find, let alone photograph, in Ottawa.

My preference is always to find birds in habitat and to situate them as such in images, but every once in a while opportunities arise for a completely clean image.

The Ponte Vecchio ("Old Bridge") is a medieval stone closed-spandrel segmental arch bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy, noted for still having shops built along it, as was once common. Butchers initially occupied the shops; the present tenants are jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers.

The bridge spans the Arno at its narrowest point where it is believed that a bridge was first built in Roman times. The Roman piers were of stone, the superstructure of wood. The bridge first appears in a document of 996. After being destroyed by a flood in 1117, it was reconstructed in stone but swept away again in 1333 save two of its central piers. It was rebuilt in 1345.

In order to connect the Palazzo Vecchio (Florence's town hall) with the Palazzo Pitti, in 1565 Cosimo I de' Medici had Giorgio Vasari build the Vasari Corridor above it. The Vasari Corridor is an elevated enclosed passageway (the yellowish part of the structure above the shops to the right in the photo), which begins on the south side of the Palazzo Vecchio, it then joins the Uffizi Gallery and leaves on its south side, crossing the Lungarno dei Archibusieri and then following the north bank of the River Arno until it crosses the river at Ponte Vecchio.

The Vasari Corridor was commissioned in connection with the marriage of Cosimo's son, Francesco, with Johanna of Austria. The idea of an enclosed passageway was motivated by the Grand Duke's desire to move freely between his residence and the government palace, when, like most monarchs of the period, he felt insecure in public, in his case especially because he had replaced the Republic of Florence.

A different experience in every season: Oisterwijk's Forests & Fens are exquisite, tranquil and inspiring all year round. Different footpaths, cycle routes and horse trails will lead you – with or without the aid of a forest ranger – through the beauty of one of the Netherlands' most unique areas of nature. There are no less than 80 fens in this stunning green expanse – pretty impressive, right?

Four seasons

Whether it’s the frozen fairy-tale fens of the winter, the dynamics of nature coming to life in spring, the musical croaking of frogs in the summer, or the explosion of colours in the autumn: Oisterwijk's Forests & Fens are a feast for all the senses.

Spot kingfishers, deer and roe deer, or bear witness to the wide variety of insects and water creatures in the fens and ditches. And after an exhilarating day of activity or sport, head to one of the large terraces to enjoy the peace and quiet and a tasty snack, lunch or dinner.Oisterwijk's Forests & Fens Groot Speijck Visitor Centre has a great terrace, as does Boshuis Venkraai. And both are ideal places to relax and soak up the surroundings.

I only just made it to witness this sunset as it quickly dipped behind the Cape (Cape Woolamai), leaving golds and reds to light the sky in it's wake.

I am away with work part of this week then off to Singapore with a girlfriend for a week so am mostly off for the next few weeks.

I'm sorry I will miss your images during that time.

I was stood on Eastbourne Pier with the wind whistling all around making it difficult for me to hold my camera steady.

When I spotted these two figures on the deserted beach. The girl was approximately in her early to mid twenties wearing a flimsy summerlike dress. The male was approximately three times her age, in his early to mid sixties wearing a dirty white raincoat.

The girl hurriedly approached the waters edge and stopped. The male slowly followed her and stopped directly behind her. The girl turned briefly to face him, whether or not words were exchanged I do not know, I was too far away. But in an instant the young girl turned away from him and entered the water. He stood motionless watching as she ventured further and deeper into the water until she disappeared out of sight beneath the crashing waves. He slowly turned and walked away without a backward glance.

What had I just witnessed? The girl had disappeared into the sea and he had disappeared mingling amongst the myriad of people on the crowded promenade. Should I call the Police and tell them what I had just seen, or should I too walk away and disappear?

If I call the Police would they believe me, more to the point, do you believe me.

What would you have done?

All will be revealed tomorrow.

Some say that Nature adapts to cohabitation with our human species. We instead, should realize that We are the ones who have to react, adapt and accept. Nature has the real power and providence over the earth, sky and earth. And water always wins.

A view of the south side of the square (100 block of W. 3rd St.) as seen looking west from State St. Until 1872, Beardstown was the seat of Cass County, and the corner building is the old county courthouse - now city offices and a museum - where Abraham Lincoln once practiced. Known as the "Almanac Trial" courthouse, this is where Lincoln, 2-1/2 years before being elected 16th President of the United States, saved an innocent man from the gallows by using an almanac to expose the perjury of a villainous witness. Today it is the only courtroom still in use where Abraham Lincoln once practiced law.

To the west of the courthouse is the old Carnegie Library, repurposed in the year 2000 as the Beardstown City Hall. The library was built in 1903-04 with a $10,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation. Some 105 Carnegie public libraries were built in Illinois, trailing only Indiana and California. A senior center, old commercial building with a remodeled facade, and a church (blocked by the three-story building next to it) round out the block.

Located in West Central Illinois, Beardstown had a population of 5,951 at the 2020 census making it the largest city in Cass County.

Knowing when to walk away,

is wisdom.

Being able to,

is courage.

Walking away with your head held high,

is dignity.

This capture shows some of the oldest buildings at Besigheim. The conditions were tricky as I had to take the photo against the bright sunlight. The building on the left is St. Cyriac's Church and the oldest part of the church dates back to 1369. In the middle is the tower of a former fortress, it's called Schochenturm and was built around 1220. The building on the right is simply called 'stone house'. It was also part of the former fortress and built around 1235.

If you follow the street it leads though a gate. In the comments I post a photo which shows the view on the tower and the stone house from the other side of the gate outside the old town wall.
