I wasn't initially crazy about the JPEGs out of the 5D Mark IV, but after learning how to tweak the JPEG engine to my preferences, I am really love the results I'm getting. I've done one thing to this out of camera JPEG - add just a tiny bit of exposure to my main subject. The color and detail is straight out of camera. I just love the color palette in this patch of sumac in my backyard. It looks like tropic decorations as they transition into their fall "clothes". I've used a circular polarizer to intensify color. My latest episode on the Mark IV covers the High ISO performance - see it here: bit.ly/2dDNwvN

So winter was over...then it wasn't. April snowstorms are always nasty surprises...winter's revenge. Still, I thought I would take advantage of it and shoot a few more winter-themed portraits. I used the Sony 135mm F1.8 GM for this shot, and the shallow depth of field combined with the winter sbuject made for a lovely end result. Maybe I had revenge on winter... This lens is expensive...but just might be worth the money! You can see all of my coverage of this truly special lens here.

I went out for an early winter hike the other day, and reached a point where I had to cover some ice over some wetlands. Fortunately the ice held me up and my feet stayed dry. I saw an interesting thing, though. There were several of these patterns in the ice which I tried to diagnose. A few minutes later I interrupted several beaver who dived under the ice, so I'm presuming this was something they created in some way. This vent that come out of doesn't freeze over the same way. It's weird looking, though, like some special effect from a movie. Perhaps some of you geniuses out there can diagnose it better for me.

Canada's massive boreal forests are a sight to see in autumn. The maples are particularly showy, with bright reds, oranges, and yellows. They burn bright and quick, and are often the first to turn and the first to "turn loose". As I hiked through the forest this Thursday I found that most of the maple leaves were on the ground and drying, while the harder trees (oaks and beeches) were putting on their own show. How ironic that the leaves that caught my eye, however, were on a fallen oak. They had died prematurely, but were preserved in a unique green/grey color. Something about them suited the mood of the day (a cool, greyish day that turned into a freak early snowstorm). The detail on these leaves are pretty amazing. The light here is imagined (I used one of my custom overlays to create it), but I wanted to visually showcase how my mind works - it was if a spotlight was on this heap of undesirables...and they became desirable to me.

High Bridge Falls: Near Lone Lake (Lake Solitude) in High Bridge city was erected a small dam, built in 1909. This is the earliest example of this construction type, and it is the last remaining buttress dam in New Jersey.

I'm currently writing a review of the Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD wide angle zoom lens. This is one of the images taken fwith that lense. We had awesome conditions over here in the Netherlands so I got to test it a lot!

Does a Golden Retriever become more golden if you photograph her at golden hour? The photographic evidence seems to point to yes. Check out why the new Tamron 150-500mm F5-6.7 VC VXD is a winner on so many levels by visiting my coverage here:

A small forest fire burned through an area not far from my house, and every time I drove by it I thought, "that would be a great location to shoot portraits!" I finally found an opportunity to shoot there, and loved the results. This portrait is shot with the new Tamron SP 35mm F1.4 prime lens, wide open, and I wish you could see how high the detail at a pixel level even at F1.4. Truly impressive. I lit the scene with 2 Godox V1S flash units (one on the other side of the fence). There's a little bit of perspective distortion from the wider focal length, but I think it works here. This is SOOC.

I had an idea for this shot, but it took a lot of work to execute. I wanted to catch the little boy looking out the window through the snow with the lights of the Christmas tree behind him. This required me to light from the outside without getting a reflection from the window and to get the exposure to such that the lights of the Christmas tree would really show. I used an LED spotlight from Godox and focused the beam to light the subject from a distance. I also used a few texture overlays to enhance the wintry mix on the window. I like the end result, though, and hope it brings a little Christmas joy to you today. More photos from the Tamron 35mm F2.8 OSD M1:2 lens I used for the shot and my review of the light here:

It's been said that nature abhors a vacuum. I would add that it loves a mirror, though. Still waters and beautiful skies make for double the fun. The appropriately named Silent Lake was a wonderfully still spot to get the reflection of a tight band of trees that is just beginning to get kissed with a little bit of autumn warmth. The Tamron SP 35mm F1.4 (F045) is one of Tamron's best lenses yet, and it proved a very able companion for capturing this beautiful scene with all of its fine details.

I was very discouraged when I slept in and missed the morning safari on that last day, however, I slowly wondered to the pond that the Chisomo Safari Camp had at the far end of the property. I was able to stand at a lookout platform and see the bush, which my group (who had left me behind) was exploring. I decided to forget about that, and tried to make the most of the morning. I did my best to photograph this cool Pied Kingfisher which was curious as to what I was doing standing in the rain with a big camera pointed toward him. While I missed seeing a White-faced owl, getting better shots of the Little Bee-eaters, and seeing a male Lion, it was a good lesson to set more alarms in the future.

The landscapes and mountains in the Antarctic Peninsula are incredible, throw in an iceberg or two and it's hard to describe.

This is Horseshoe Falls (the Canadian side of Niagara Falls), and one of the coolest things about the falls is the great lights they put on them at night. There are several different shades of color, but this is my favorite. A blue torrent emptying into a huge basin, with the blue mist rising out of it. At night it is an otherworldly site, and I was blessed to have a hotel suite with a pretty great angle for capturing it. I used a telephoto to compress the scene and give you an intimate look where you are plummeting over the edge into the abyss...safely. You're welcome.
