In May 2024, ORNL successfully transferred 270 kilowatts of power wirelessly to a Porsche Taycan electric vehicle.
ORNL researchers at the vehicle power electronics research and electric drives research groups recently demonstrated 270-kW wireless power transfer to a Porsche Taycan electric vehicle with more than 95% efficiency. This accomplishment sets a world record on the power level wirelessly transferred to a light-duty passenger vehicle. Moreover, this technology uses ORNL’s patented technology on polyphase electromagnetic coupling coils with rotating magnetic fields that significantly reduces the size, weight, volume, and cost of the wireless charging systems for electric vehicles. Not just a 10-20% improvement, ORNL design increases the power density of the coils by 8-10 times compared to the existing developments in the world. This ORNL technology also significantly reduces the electromagnetic field emissions below the limits identified in the international guidelines while most of existing developments struggle meeting those limits even at low power levels such as 11 kW.
