The window at the north east end of the chancel is by Hardman but the style differs greatly from the West and Harbord Windows. The Smithson Window was presented by Thomas Abbey Smithson, a churchwarden, in memory of various members of his family. Thomas rose from being a banker’s clerk to be a director of Hull Banking Co. Ltd.
This window was manufactured by the John Hardman Company of London and Birmingham and designed by John Powell and completed Christmas Eve 1885. Thomas Abbey communicated with Hardman’s March 24 1884 from 5 Balmoral Terrace, Anlaby Road. The lights only to be fixed with copper wireguards.
The principal subject of the design is an illustration of the vision of St John, Revelations Chap 4 of the elders casting their crowns at the foot of the throne. Our Lord as the Lamb holding the books of the seven seals in the centre, seated surrounded by flaming cherubim, the seven lamps above his Head and the four Evangelistic symbols in the head of each light on either side kneel the Elders with their harps and Censors singing the Canticle ‘Holy, Holy, Holy, Thou art worthy O Lord to receive glory and honour and power, for thou hast created all things and for thy pleasure they are and were created’- these words are written on the scroll. Beneath, Angels proceed from the throne calling the just to come from the four ends of the earth, while others bear their celestial crowns.
The lower part of the window is illustrative of Revelations Chapter 7. In the base part of the Centre light is placed St John seeing the Vision with his symbol beside him, whilst the Angel explains to him the meaning with text written on a scroll. ‘Write blessed are the dead, which die in the Lord’. Immediately above is another Angel bearing the sign of the Living God on either side the first of all Ages and Conditions of life are being signed on their foreheads.
The head of the window is filled with Angels playing musical instruments and attendant upon the Holy Spirit who is represented as coming down from the top of the tracery amidst rays of glory and stars.

‘This window is dedicated by THOMAS ABBEY SMITHSON some years churchwarden of this church to the glory of God and in memory of JANE HEPBURN his wife who died 12th November 1882 aged 48years. Also in memory of his father GEORGE SMITHSON died June 12th 1869 Aged 66 and of his mother ANN SMITHSON died Janry.1857 aged 64 and his brother RICHARD JAMES died Jan 10 1853 aged 22 and his sister ELIZABETH KIDD died 17 Sept 1864 aged 42 and JANE KIDD died 9 January 1860 aged 34; (these were in the request forwarded to Hardman’s and not included in the final window, of his aunt ELIZABETH ABBEY died 18 Jan 1870 aged 78 all of whom are buried in the General Cemetery Spring Bank Hull and of his uncle THOMAS ABBEY Alderman of this Borough who died 11th April 1875 aged 80 and JAMES ABBEY died 16 March 1856 aged 56’
