These Grebes were once hunted for their feathers which were used as decorations in hats and were almost wiped out in Britain, but the population recovered due to great conservation methods. This mum had to work hard trying to keep up with this young one too !

After the "flying naan bread", which incidentally was about 3pm when there was still the last throws of a blue sky to be seen, I was forced further up the beach. The conditions were getting bleaker and tempestuous by the minute. And to add insult to injury, the sea foam was making a mockery of any long exposure shots I had planned for, but since I had cajoled Mrs R this far under the pretence of it being the best view of the castle (hmm), I thought I'd better make an attempt... this is 20 minutes after naan and as good as it got!

In hindsight, I quite like the whiteout sea... it reminds me of John Carpenter's The Fog, and if I was a good wordsmith I might have gone down that road for a decent title, but you can't have everything. Not so sure I'd like to be there on my own after dark with only moonlight for company and that thought in my head.

I got a double shot at this Killdeer as it left a mudflat on one side of Horsepen Bayou, crossing in front of me only to be chased back from a mudflat on the other side where its mother had apparently just mopped.
