Robert Marvin Hull OC (January 3, 1939 – January 30, 2023) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. His blond hair, skating speed, end-to-end rushes, and ability to shoot the puck at very high velocity all earned him the nickname "the Golden Jet". His talents were such that an opposing player was often assigned just to shadow him.

During his 23-year playing career, from 1957 to 1980, he played in both the National Hockey League and World Hockey Association with the Chicago Black Hawks, Winnipeg Jets, and Hartford Whalers. He won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player twice and the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading point scorer three times, while helping the Black Hawks win the Stanley Cup in 1961. He also led the WHA's Winnipeg Jets to Avco Cup championships in 1976 and 1978. He led the NHL in goals seven times, the second most of any player in history, and led the WHA in goals one additional time while being the WHA's most valuable player two times; his 77 goals scored in the 1974–75 WHA season was the most in league history.

He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983, the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1997, and received the Wayne Gretzky International Award in 2003. In 2017 Hull was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history.

Eva: Hey Dave, do I look like a skater girl?

Dave: I'm not sure how to define skater girl.

Eva: The bigger question is do you think I could pass for a human?

Dave: In a very dark room filled with people with poor eye sight?

Eva: No. I'm thinking more about a grocery store.

Dave: Why would you want to pass for a human at the grocery store?

Eva: Shreddies. I want to get my own stash so I can be the one in charge of it.

Dave: And you think by wearing Julia's Jets hat low on your face and disguising your ears as pony tails that they'll just give you a bunch of Shreddies?

Eva: Of course not. I'll need to pay them first.

Dave: I didn't think you had any money.

Eva: Not yet. But, on a completely unrelated topic - how do you feel about lending me twenty bucks?

Our entry into the "hat" challenge in 52 weeks for dogs. It also works for the "you can't see me" theme in Studio 26. Eva does not like wearing hats as much as her brother Bruno does (seriously, he kind of grooves on the whole thing), but she did persevere for the photo session.

Dodgy internet connection today, so my flickr commentary will be limited today. Hope to come back later to comment on other people's photos.

Go Jets Go!

#adoptashelterdog

The Olympic men's hockey begins tomorrow in Sochi, Russia, as Canada begins their quest to repeat their gold medal victory in 2010 in Vancouver. Tomorrow is also a key game between the Canadian and United States women's hockey teams renewing their battle for the gold medal in Sochi. Good luck to all countries and Go Canada Go!

This beautiful mural in Winnipeg has a lot of history and memories of hockey in Manitoba. From hockey played outdoors to the Winnipeg Arena. From "The Golden Jet" Bobby Hull and his booming slap shot to Teemu Selanne (Team Finland) and his NHL rookie goal scoring record.

Famous teams like the Winnipeg Falcons Senior Team who won the Allan Cup in 1919-1920 and then Canada's first gold medal in the 1920 Winter Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium.

The Winnipeg Jets, one of the original WHA teams that later became an NHL franchise, and then left for Phoenix, Arizona, breaking many hearts at the time. But like a phoenix rising, Winnipeg got their team back, and hockey is as popular as ever in Winnipeg and Manitoba.

The Winnipeg Jets 2011-2012 season finally came to an end. But looking at the bright side, there WILL be a 2012-2013 Winnipeg Jets season to look forward to. Go Jets Go!

Having some fun in the screen printing room and came up with this.

Selanne is wearing a Winnipeg Jets 'Goals For Kids' Patch - this patch was worn by the Winnipeg Jets for 6 seasons from 90/91 to 95/96. This patch is designed for commemorative, nostalgic display, and collection. The patch measures approximately at 3" wide by 3.75" tall. By the end of his rookie season he was wearing the assistant captain's "A".

Inscribed - "Teemu Selanne / 1995 #8"

Selanne wore 13 in his rookie and sophomore seasons ('92-'93, '93-'94) and 8 in his last (almost) 2 seasons ('94-'95, '95-'96).

Yes, Teemu Selanne did wear jersey number 8. In fact, his number 8 was retired by the Anaheim Ducks. He also wore number 8 for his national team in Finland, where his jersey was also retired. While he initially wore number 13 upon his return to Anaheim, he switched back to 8 in his second season back with the team.

Teemu Selänne was traded to the Anaheim Ducks on February 7, 1996. He was traded from the Winnipeg Jets along with Marc Chouinard and a fourth-round pick in exchange for Chad Kilger, Oleg Tverdovsky, and a third-round pick.

• Teemu Selanne of the Winnipeg Jets shatters the rookie scoring record, scoring a whopping 76 goals and 56 assists for 132 points.

Teemu Ilmari Selänne (born July 3, 1970) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey winger. He began his professional career in 1989–90 with Jokerit of the SM-liiga and played 21 seasons in the National Hockey League for the Winnipeg Jets, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, and Colorado Avalanche. Nicknamed "the Finnish Flash", Selänne is the highest scoring Finn in NHL history, and one of the highest overall; he retired in 2014 11th all-time with 684 goals and 15th with 1,457 points. He holds numerous team scoring records for both the Winnipeg/Arizona franchise and the Anaheim Ducks. His jersey number 8 was retired by the Ducks in 2015. In 2017 Selänne was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history. On June 26, 2017, Selänne was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as the second Finn after Jari Kurri.

Selänne was a first-round selection of the Jets, tenth overall, at the 1988 NHL Entry Draft, but initially remained in Finland. He led the SM-liiga in scoring as part of Jokerit's Kanada-malja winning team in 1991–92 before moving to North America. He broke into the NHL by scoring 76 goals and 132 points in the 1992–93. It remains the league record for most goals and points by a rookie and earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the top first-year player in the NHL. He has scored 50 goals in a season three times and topped 100 points on four occasions. He played in 10 NHL All-Star Games, was named to four post-season All-Star teams and won the inaugural Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy in 1998–99 as the league's leading goal scorer. He was named recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2005–06 for perseverance and dedication to the game and was a member of the Ducks' 2007 Stanley Cup championship team.

Internationally, Selänne was a long-time member of the Finland national team. He played in five World Championships, winning a silver and bronze medal, and in three Canada Cup/World Cup of Hockey tournaments. A six-time Olympian, Selänne helped Finland win three bronze medals and, in 2006, a silver medal. He is the all-time leader in scoring at the Olympic Men’s ice hockey tournament with 43 points. A national star in his native country, Selänne is the subject of a top-grossing biographical documentary in Finland. He was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2017.

Man there is a lot of stuff in this mural. Yeah thats very technical but the artists have included a lot of history here. I can appreciate some of it but I think Henk should do a blog post on this one! ha ha

Edit: One of the visitors below is one of the artists that painted this mural. You can visit her website Mandy van Leuuwen to see more of the wonderful art she and Michel St. Hilaire have created.

Found these vintage ear muffs from the 80's. Being a huge hockey fan, looking forward to the playoffs:) Winnipeg is my "hometown" However, I'm hoping the Montreal Canadiens go all the way:) I have no idea if any of my Flickr friends are hockey fans! I grew up with hockey, as did many Canadians. Thanks to the legend, Wayne Gretzky known as the "Great One" has brought the game to a hockey boom in the USA, namely to California.

10-30-1985, Milwaukee, WI. Drafted round 1 #13 overall by Buffalo Sabres 2004. Drew Stafford is an American retired professional ice hockey right winger who was most recently playing for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL). Stafford was drafted in the first round, 13th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, and has also played for the Winnipeg Jets and Boston Bruins. Stafford was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but grew up in Faribault, Minnesota. As a teenager, he played AAA hockey with the Milwaukee Jr Admirals. His father, Gordie, played professional hockey in the International Hockey League (IHL) and is the director of hockey at Shattuck-Saint Mary's in Faribault, where Drew also played high school hockey. Stafford's uncle, Barrie Stafford, was the head equipment manager for the Edmonton Oilers for 28 years before retiring in 2012. Stafford played for the St. Albert Bantam AA Flyers in St. Albert, Alberta, in 1999–2000. During the season, he finished third in League scoring with 26 goals and 47 points in 30 games while leading his team to a provincial berth. At the conclusion of the season, Stafford was selected to participate in Hockey Alberta's elite development program as a member of the Northwest Sharks in the 2000 Pioneer Chrysler Alberta Cup. Stafford played at Shattuck-Saint Mary's in Faribault, Minnesota, for two years and played on the US national team at the 2003 IIHF World U18 Championships. He then played for three seasons at the University of North Dakota and on the US national team at the 2004 and 2005 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. Following his freshman season, Stafford was drafted 13th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. After two more seasons, he signed a professional contract with the Sabres in 2006, foregoing his senior season at the University of North Dakota. Stafford finished his three-year collegiate career with 118 points (48 goals and 70 assists). Stafford began his professional career with Buffalo's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Rochester Americans. With nine points in the first 11 games of the season, he caught the attention of Sabres management, and was called up to Buffalo in early November to replace injured winger Maxim Afinogenov. In his NHL debut on November 5 against the New York Rangers, Stafford assisted on a game-winning overtime goal by Daniel Brière, earning his first NHL point. On November 11, he scored his first goal in the NHL on the Philadelphia Flyers' Antero Niittymäki. He won NHL Rookie of the Month honors for March 2007 despite the fact that Paul Stastny of the Colorado Avalanche had his record-breaking rookie scoring streak in the same month. Stafford scored his first game-winning goal on February 27 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Stafford became a regular in the Sabres' lineup during the 2007–08 season, scoring his first career hat-trick against the Atlanta Thrashers on January 18, 2008. More than a year later, he went on to score his second hat-trick in a 10–2 rout of the Edmonton Oilers on January 27, 2009. A little less than a year after that, he celebrated his third hat-trick on December 15, 2010, against the Boston Bruins. He added his fourth, also against Boston, on January 1, 2011, his fifth on February 8, 2011 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and his sixth on February 13, 2011, against the New York Islanders. On June 3, 2011, Stafford signed a four-year contract extension with the Sabres. In his ninth season with the Sabres in 2014–15, on February 11, 2015, Stafford was traded alongside Tyler Myers, Brendan Lemieux, Joel Armia and a 2015 first-round draft pick (Jack Roslovic) to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Evander Kane, Zach Bogosian and the rights to goaltending prospect Jason Kasdorf. On February 14, 2015, in just his second game on the Jets, Stafford scored a goal in regulation, as well as the shootout winner, in a 5–4 shootout victory over the Detroit Red Wings. On the eve of free-agency Stafford re-signed to a two-year contract to remain in Winnipeg on June 30, 2015. On March 1, 2017, Stafford was traded from Winnipeg to the Boston Bruins for a conditional 6th round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. On March 4, Stafford played in his first Bruins game, racking up his first scoring point as a Bruin by assisting on Ryan Spooner's game winning goal against the New Jersey Devils for a 3-2 home ice win at TD Garden. Stafford scored his first Bruins goal on March 8, as the third Bruins goal en route to a 6-1 home ice defeat of the visiting Detroit Red Wings. On August 25, 2017, Stafford signed a one-year contract with the New Jersey Devils. In 59 games with the club, Stafford recorded eight goals and 15 points in 59 games. On September 7, 2018, Stafford signed a professional tryout agreement to attend the Devils' training camp. On October 5, the Devils signed Stafford to a one-year contract. He retired a the end of the 2018/19 season. His NHL-Stats: GP:863 / G:202 / A:237 / Pts:439 / PIM:433; Career-Stats: GP:1240 / G:412 / A:529 / Pts:941 / PIM:718 (2000/01 – 2018/19).

A new feature mural has been created at Portage Ave and Furby St In Winnipeg, MB. by artists Michel Saint Hilaire and Mandy van Leeuwen. It is a recent collaboration between the artists and The West End Biz.

The image is a powerful depiction of Winnipeg’s passion for and achievement in hockey, following a timeline from the childhood days of practice and dreams, through historic times and trophies, to the return of the NHL to our city. Beginning with a backyard rink view on a wintery day of a West End home, boys take part in the aspiration.

The foreground presents a victorious monument featuring the many achievements of Winnipeg's hockey greats, including Johnathan Toews and Bobby Hull. This blend of stone and gold was inspired by a Francios Rude sculpture- La Marseillaise. Other sections of the monument highlight major achievements of the Winnipeg Falcons, such as their Olympic Gold Medal win in 1920, and a rendering of its character holding the gold medal. Many trophies of Winnipeg’s great hockey moments fused into the monument include The Allan Cup, Smythe Trophy, Avco Cup, and the Calder Cup. As with Olympism, Winnipeg’s own Golden Boy tops the shrine with its brightly lit torch. Team logos such as the Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose are interspersed throughout the golden fabric that flows through this profound sculpture. Sculpted female figures support scrolls of prolific players from Manitoba’s hockey history.

A fan-filled arena illuminated with a spotlight on a major league hockey player posed in a scoring position symbolizes the return of the NHL to Winnipeg and the vision of every new player’s dream.

This Mural has been created in collaboration with Michel Saint Hilaire & Mandy van Leeuwen 2011

We were commissioned by The West End Biz and sponsored by Take Pride Winnipeg, Winnipeg Foundation, North American Lumber, And Sigurdson Financial
