Marc Simpson gladly showed me around town, I would have been lost otherwise. For some late afternoon action he chose the athletic field (at the baseball diamonds) on Highway 59 where we got a couple of movements in and out in very short time.

The first cut of boxcars carry BCIT markings for BCRail, so I guess these were homebound.

Winnipeg woke up to our first snowfall this past Thursday morning.

This shot was waiting just outside the back of our house when I took the dog for the first morning walk. Soon as we got back from the walk, I was outside with the camera.

The image as seen was gone once the walk was shovelled.

Typical Convention Centre. There are few restourants hidden inside. Not much else going on unless there is an event happening. When it was completed in 1975, there were only a few similar facilities in Canada at the time. And in 1975, Winnipeg had the largest convention centre in Canada.

My hometown is rad.

After leading an extra 314 from Winnipeg into Toronto earlier on this same morning, BCOL 4646 & BCOL 4648 (mid train DP) are rolling east along the Kingston Sub at Whitby on their way East towards Gordon Yard in Moncton, NB with train M306 on the drawbar. The next day at Joffre Yard in Quebec City this train would end up lifting the CN3047 & 4706 for the remainder of the run towards the east coast.

I was going through old photos and found this wonderful example of a Winnipeg sidewalk, freshly plowed by a cute little sidewalk-sized snowplow. Note the bands on the elm trees. They are to trap elm bark beetles, which spread the fungus that causes Dutch Elm Disease.

The annual Winnipeg Doors Open event was held this past weekend which see a number of historic buildings open their doors for people to get a little history and a tour (all for free).

Good Flickr friend morrismulvey and I went through the Vaughan Street Jail which was built in 1881.

In Winnipeg, Manitoba. I'm not exactly sure when this was taken, but it was the winter of 2005/2006 at earliest.

Approaching Winnipeg to conclude day 1 of the BC Trip. I'm taking a break from trip photos to upload other stuff.

This is part of a huge collection of pictures I took during a flying school trip From Ottawa, Ontario to Vancouver, British Columbia this past summer. A great learning opportunity for us new private pilots and instructors to fly to all these cool locations along the way and back. We took 3 Cessna 172s and one Beechcraft Duchess.

My first time to Manitoba. Winnipeg had some great dusk photo opportunities, especially across the Red River looking back towards the city.

The main subject in this photo is the Esplanade Riel, with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights just to the left featuring prominently on the skyline.

Wouldn't you love to come home to this every night?

This was shot on a departing flight from the Winnipeg airport. Shots like these are a fantastic way to test camera ISO capabilities. I shot this freehand at:

ISO 5000

1/100

2.8

31mm focal range

As you can tell, quite a substantial amount of detail is ruined due to the high ISO, however to free hand this from a plane moving at a great speed truly shows the amazing low light capabilities of the D800 (I can only imagine what the performance of an f/1.4 would be like on it).
