When I ran my personal best in the marathon in December, I realized I had likely placed in my age group day-of. It was fun to get this in the mail confirming it.

A quiet day.

Scones and eggs then a run for me, a ride for him.

A hike.

A movie at home.

Now dinner's on, and we're organizing for the rest of the week.

The year feels new, abundant.

A first for me - out on the Winner sand bank off of Hayling Island. Met up with Adrian who suggested that we give it a go, a fascinating place, well worth a few more visits. Not my favourite shooting directly into the sun but I couldn't resist all the golden light. The shot loses a lot of it's appeal down sizing but retains enough to suggest what it was like.

PS. loitering too long on the sandbank can leave one getting rather wet with the incoming tide. Just saying.

First long run of 2020 looked like rain for the duration, so a double exposure to remind myself. I love the way the water droplets linger on trees around here when it's just above freezing. The air hangs heavy, damp.

The run, the second long run in my marathon training cycle, included 8 miles at marathon pace. Going into the run that felt entirely daunting- the rain, the newness of the training cycle, the way my brain doesn't believe my legs can do the work. But the run went relatively well and ended up being confidence inducing. I'm grateful.

Playing with D600 and a ND filter.

The Illinois Midland Railway was a 1.9-mile freight line in the small rural town of Newark, Illinois. Over a century ago the town was deceived by a business man who promised a much longer line connecting much of northern Illinois, but in the end the man skipped town with most of the community’s money and only a small section of track was completed. However, the people of Newark still made use of the line which was connected to the neighboring town of Millington were there was a much larger freight line. This LEGO model is based on the Illinois Midland Railway circa 1943. During that time, a World War I veteran, William Thorsen, ran the operation by himself. The mechanical equipment included a steam powered Vulcan 0-4-0T and a Ford Model T fitted with train wheels to drive on the tracks. At the start of each day Thorsen would fire up Old Number 4 which resided in a shed in Newark. While Old Number 4 warmed up, Thorsen drove the Model T in reverse to Millington while inspecting the tracks and making any necessary repairs before heading back to Newark. Upon returning, Thorsen would couple Old Number 4 to freight cars including boxcars and hoppers and then primarily haul grain and/or coal cement between the two towns once a day. Old Number 4’s top speed was 5 MPH. The railway was used until 1977 and was closed forever after someone burned one of the train bridges that crossed over a creek between the two rural towns. The shed where Old Number 4 was housed had to be lengthened, because the three trains before Number 4 were smaller and the shed was too short. The Model T is a design that I found on moc-pages.com by Richard Brown. The Vulcan 0-4-0T is mainly based on Holger Matthes’ design of Steam Engine BR 80 from his book titled, “The LEGO Trains Book.” I made a few slight modifications to match photographs that I could find of Old Number 4. The track design was found on l-gauge.org.

We went to the center of town to grab an ice cream and go for a walk because we had spring-ish temperatures yesterday, and this buddy was on alert for his people to reemerge.

A rainy day. And a walk. A lot of walking and pondering (praying?) and trying to figure out life. So curve balls and musings and hopings and sometimes I think I'm doing so well and others I'm not so sure. Ah, to be a human. That I am.

I took this photo with my phone first and went back home for the big camera, because I wanted it big enough to blow up.

Early spring snow

the kind that fell all morning,

hung around through midday

and by late afternoon, rain, rain and away it did go

It felt magical and needed, and my husband's boyish grin I needed too. I'd already taken a few photos earlier in the day and when I saw the fat, heavy kind of flakes out the window grabbed him and the camera. For a few minutes we felt like kids, alive and delighted, present only to the moment. I think these small joys are going to matter so very much in the coming days and weeks.

Congratulations to the February Popup Photo Contest!

This morning and this evening, a heavy thick fog. It didn't keep us from getting out for a walk. He obliged me for a photo, knowing I was curious about the light. I wish we'd gotten out a few minutes earlier.

As mentioned in a previous post, two American Bitterns had a territorial dispute going for a good 15 minutes, with the final action taking place about 10 ft from where I was sitting. Best I could do was a few close-up shots since I only had a 600mm lens with me.
