The place name of Reit im Winkl, first mentioned in a document in 1160, is derived from roden (what means to clear or make arable) and means that a settlement arose in a mountain corner after clearing.
The playing card of the "Schellunter" as a local landmark goes back to a legend. This legend says that Reit im Winkl was overlooked during the land distribution by Napoleon in 1806. The sovereigns of Bavaria, Salzburg and Tyrol then wanted to clarify the allocation of territory by playing cards. Bavarian King Max I Joseph secured victory by taking a trick with the "Schellunter". The foundation stone for tourism was laid in 1858 by a visit from King Maximilian II and a travel report by Franz von Kobell. After the Second World War followed the rise to an internationally known tourism and winter sports resort.
Reit im Winkl became famous through the double Olympic champion of 1976, Rosi Mittermaier (downhill, slalom), who was born on the Winklmoosalm. Also famous daughters of the resort are the folk music stars Margot and Maria Hellwig and the biathlete and Olympic champion of 2002 and 2010, Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle.

Made 12x120s photographs using an iOptron star tracker pro, stacked them with sequator (Sky region: partial, Auto brightness on, Reduce distortion effects: Auto, Reduce light pollution: Uneven level 2, Enhance star lights: On, everything else off) which sums up to an exposure time of 1320s.
The super bright light at the right hand side is Jupiter.
This photograph was taken late June from Winklmoosalm looking south (Austria). Challenge, as with all night sky photographs in europe, was the halo of the next city, even that it was approx. 80km away.

The route starts and finishes in German, but we are follogin the border on a mountain ridge, then descend on the Austrian side and walk back to the starting point in Germany.
Near Reit im Winkl, Chiemgau, Germany
The Dürrnbachhorn we just climbed is in the middle, covered with a fluffy cloud. Then we took the ridge to the right.

Spring Crocuses as far as the eye can reach. Seen at the Winklmoosalm.
By the way: Germanys "Gold-Rosi" Rosi Mittermaier comes from here. In the 60ies and 70ies Gold-Rosi won many Goldmedals at Ski World Cups and Olympic Winter Games. Gold-Rosi is still Germany's most famous skier.

Panorama made from 2 single hand held shots taken with the wonderful 2/135 Apo Sonnar at the Nikon D800E. Some adjustment of contrast in Lightroom and slight enhancement of saturation was done using Adobe standard as profile, so basically images appear with full dynamics and rather low saturated and I can carefully adjust parameters without getting to much saturation and contrast for my taste.
