There are many like it, but this one is mine. My wing is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I master my life.

The Red-Winged Blackbirds are back and they were singing their hearts out along the marshy area of the St Mary's River. Mating rituals begin with the song of the male. Females often do not return songs until they have established themselves in the territory of a male. Male displays include vocalization in a crouched position with rapid and highly conspicuous fluttering of the wings. The female responds with a similar crouch and vocalization. This poor young crow was quite distressed with the pain of a broken wing so once Graham was able to get a safe hold of him we put a cover over his head and legged it off down the drove to get back to the car. I said there was no way I was going to hold him as I'd seen the damage the bird had done to Graham's hands with it's beak and claws...so I drove!

There are always several red winged black birds in this field which is near my neighborhood. Last night, I decided to hang out there until I got a decent picture or two, which turned out to be easier said than done. One, they move incredibly fast, so all of my attempts at panning for in-flight pictures were total flops. Even at rest, they were usually behind the grass so that even if I got a decent shot of the bird, there was too much blurry grass in the front. Anyway, here's the best two shots of the evening. Maybe I'll get another chance to get back out there and see if I can get any better ones.

Yesterday we had about 50 blackbirds arrive. Most of them were Red-winged Blackbirds, but there were a few Grackles and Brown-headed Cowbirds. Today the flock had grown to over 100 birds. They hung around all day devouring all the seed that I put out.
