Not my finest ever shot, but the first time I have seen this behaviour. The Short Eared Owl at the back is clapping its wings - 5 or 6 times in quick succession.
This is done as part of courtship and also during territorial disputes, which is more likely here given the time of year. Wonderful to see and hear!

I was cutting back spent blooms yesterday, and saw this fellow. It's been a long time since I saw a blue wing.
The Brown Winged Kingfisher…. their habitat can be found in Asia, including Thailand, India, Myanmar, and Malaysia in subtropical and tropical mangrove forests. Their population is decreasing, and they are a rare species.

We went to a classic car show today ... they don't make wing mirrors like this any more.
Made some updates to my 2016 X-Wing. I tried to make improvements to the nose and cockpit canopy shaping, and moved the gun mounts to above and below the s-foils.

Red-winged Blackbirds roost in flocks in all months of the year. In summer small numbers roost in the wetlands where the birds breed. Winter flocks can be congregations of several million birds, including other blackbird species and starlings. Each morning the roosts spread out, traveling as far as 50 miles to feed, then re-forming at night.

I wasn't sure about posting this image, it's a little soft on the focus, but I liked it so here it is.
I think this is part of the injury that kept this guy grounded from flying. It really made me realize how specialized these creatures are. One small part of his wing broke and he quickly went from apex predator to vulnerable prey. Nature is rough!

The elegant Azure-winged Magpie (Cyanopica cyanus or Cyanopica cyana) has an intriguing world distribution. Until recently some believed that there were two population groups of the same species separated by thousands of miles; one in south western Iberia and the other in Asia . It was said that Portuguese sailors had brought the bird back from Asia during the 15th century. However, the discovery of a 40,000-year-old fossil of the species in Gibraltar in 2000 has finally laid to rest the idea, and proving the established opinion that the bird has been around here for very much longer. Recent genetic evidence points to two separate species, one European and one Asian. The two populations may have been separated by the onset of the Quaternary ices, much like the populations of Iberian Lynx and Iberian Imperial Eagle. As it grew colder the European populations of Azure-winged Magpies would have been pushed into and trapped in Iberia. See 'Origin of Iberian Lynx and Iberian Imperial Eagle'.
Wildlife photography is to a large extent about opportunities, those you seize, those you miss, those you don't even see.... Red-winged blackbirds for sure are offering plenty of opportunities on Vancouver Island for a large portion of the year. It is probably one of the first bird I photographed when I started wildlife photography a few years ago. It is ever since, probably the bird I photograph the most each year. Yet, I feel that there is always a better picture of a red-winged blackbird which needs to be taken. The temptation was great to present a "year-end exhibit" of all those red-winged blackbird pictures I have taken this year. You will be glad I refrained from it. Here are a few I like.

US Air Force McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle AF 96-0201 "Wing Commander" of the 494th Fighter Squadron, 48th Fighter Wing, approaches to land on Runway 22 at RAF Lakenheath.
This large rusted, corten steel Eagle sculpture provides a welcome perch for a Noisy Miner bird. It and its flock may even have enough aggression to see off such a large bird as an eagle if it was real. Using my Lensbaby. Happy Wing Wednesday
