i can play a long game, but finally getting to being able to work on the galaxie with odin is one of the longest i've played. when he was barely a year old, i wondered about the day when he'd help me finish one of those projects that i’ve been always meaning to start.
when we were taking a ride for the first time with his cousins we all noticed that the passenger side window was getting hard to roll down.
aha! the perfect opportunity to clean up and grease the window regulator before it wears out and breaks. i know this because when i first got the car i ignored how hard it was to roll up and down the driver's side door and stripped the teeth on the regulator ( you can see the window handle is off in this picture because i was trying to figure out how to get it to roll down ). i learned then that it's much, much easier to clean and grease a regulator rather than try to track down a used one and replace it.
so, i showed odin how to take off the door panel and he was very excited to help out by using steel wool to scrape the ancient, hardened grease out of the "scissor arm" rails that roll the window up and down.
after he cleaned out the rails i showed him where to spray a little white lithium grease on the rails around the rollers. then he rolled the window up and down the distribute the grease evenly.
his eyes got big and he smiled a big smile when he saw,lo and behold, the window rolled up and down just like it would right off the factory floor!
we high-fived each other and odin said, "poppi, i really love working on the galaxie."
"so do i, odin, so do i."
i think we're going to have a whole lot of fun working together on the galaxie and someday down the road i know he'll be proud of all the work we've done when i give him the keys.
The window regulator for the 1999 Buick Park Avenue doesn't at all match the description in the Haynes manual.
There are no regulator screws to loosen. Instead, there are two sets of brackets like this one at the interface between the regulator and the glass.
The little white plastic piece has two tabs which stick down into the metal frame. The fit is just a little too tight to just depress the tabs to release. Instead, wedge a screwdriver just a little ways into the metal bracket, between the metal bracket and the plastic one. The plastic one stays on the window glass as you lift it out.
Note that the time-honored trick of taping the window glass in place while you lower the regulator doesn't work well, as you don't have access to the top edge of the regulator with the window in the closed position. Lower the regulator just enough that the brackets are visible through the hole in the door when the cosmetic panel and seal are removed. Then either use copious amounts of tape to support it at this height a few inches below the closed position, or have someone hold the window for you as you lower the regulator. Or (preferred) both.
So the Window motor and regulator crapped out on the Honda Element, So I called the Dealership today and they told me the part is $400 and takes 2 hours to put in and maybe they could have it done by next Thursday, and I am like really? ( I live in my car, where will I live?) So what is the full price to install $667. So I start thinking I have seen those boobs that work in the service garage, I bet I could have a monkey switch out that part, but since I don't have a monkey, I will have to do it myself, So I called ORiley's, ordered the part, pick it up at 2:45, stripped the door apart at 3:10, cussed at the door, tore everything out, and then put it all back together with new parts in 22 minutes. Works like new! Now I have $567 saved up for that Monkey!

just checking to make sure that the new regulator's bolts line up with the old one.
it's a little hard to tell from the photo, but it can be tricky to get a unit into and out of the inside of the door since you can't remove the welded door panel and the "cutouts" don't leave much "wiggle room".
it turns out that the hardest part about replacing a window regulator on a 1965 galaxie 500 hardtop coupe is actually finding a regulator.
i called various specialty parts suppliers and junkyards all over the country that are listed in the "official" book of vendors that you get when you join the galaxie 500 club and couldn't find a single unit that would fit my car.
somehow my brother-in-law found a shop in upstate new york that had several of them. but the curmudgeonly proprietor wouldn't send me the unit until i sent him a money order ( basically the same as sending cash ) because he "didn't trust" credit cards.
when i asked him what was to stop him from not sending me the part after taking my money , he said "nothing."
something about his attitude made me trust him and within two days of sending the money, i got the part in the mail!

Who needs a window regulator to keep your window up when you have a piece of wood? And I just want to mention this piece was laying around the back room, and it's the PERFECT size - no trimming needed.
The replacement was for a manual window crank, not electric. This'll do for now.
