The Jowo Temple of Kyichu is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, originally built in the 7th century by the Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo. It is considered to be one of the 108 border taming temples he built. In the 8th century the temple was visited by Padmasambhava and it is believed he concealed many spiritual treasures here. In 1644 the temple was taken over by Ngawang Namgyal. From 1836 to 1838 the temple was restored and re-consecrated by the 25th Je Khenpo Sherab Gyaltshen. In 1971, Kesang Choden Wangchuck, the queen of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck built a Guru Temple next to the old Jowo Temple which was consecrated by Dilgo Khyentse. Ever since then the annual rites of great accomplishment for the deities Vajrasattva, Palchen Heruka, and Vajrakilaya have been held in this temple for the well being of the country under the patronage of Kesang Choden Wangchuck. There is a belief that the two orange trees in the courtyard of Kyichu Lhakhang bear fruit throughout the year.
The temple is part of a network of 12 temples arranged around the Jo-khang temple at Lhasa. All of them were built in the time of King Songtsen Gampo.

The concept of Old Cromwell Town is to “Preserving and reconstructing buildings from Cromwell’s past to create a unique attraction, and a setting for local artisans, cottage industries and special events”.
As the waters of Lake Dunstan began to rise behind the Clyde Dam, the price of progress involved the destruction of an essential piece of Central Otago history. But the foresight of a group of concerned residents of Cromwell in early 1985 resulted in an effort to save a portion of that history. ‘Save Old Cromwell’ was born and an autonomous voluntary Incorporated Society formed, with the Board managing the activities.
Initially, eight buildings were chosen from the old commercial area due to be submerged by the advent of the new hydro lake. These buildings were to be relocated further up the main street to a site above the new lake level – and so began ‘Old Cromwell Town’.
The concept of Old Cromwell Town today is based on terms of ‘believable’ town planning. That is, the Board is reconstructing a commercial, residential and rural zone where land is divided into distinct sections. This has been done to retain the authenticity of ‘street life’, industries and activities taking place side by side, as opposed to an open plan ‘theme’ type layout.
Constraints on the Board in the form of funding and time are a part of everyday life in Old Cromwell Town. However, with land tenure secured on the precinct, life can proceed in a positive direction.
Cromwell and the Central Otago district can now enjoy this delightful asset, a visual reminder of ‘how it used to be’. Cromwell is the only major historic gold town to have been largely submerged under the waters of the Clutha River, only to have part of the old Cromwell town centre actually survive.
Along with the new town, Old Cromwell Town still has a lot of growing to do. During the forthcoming years the public will not only see this happen, but will also have the opportunity to participate in the recreation and maintenance of this unique piece of history. Cromwell – submerged, but not forgotten!

I usually take photos of modern windows, so found some traditional ones in London for a change. HWW!
A Flickr friend, Loveallmydolls, asked me about my dollhouse windows so I am posting a few pics.
I used balsa strip wood to make these windows. I attached them together with wood glue, primed them, and painted them with white latex house paint.
This window is 11 pieces of stripwood. This is set into a hole that was cut into the diorama wall. In reality, holes are not needed and a faux window would work just as well.
The image is from Country magazine. They have a lot of pretty seasonal landscape photos. I put a piece of thin plastic (lamination plastic) over the photo so it would look more like glass.
Pre-made playscale windows are very expensive (when you need a lot of them) -- about $10 plus shipping. I made 4 windows for about $5.
I made this window the same size as the pre-made playscale windows I saw online (8"x4").
Everyone seems to be adopting colored laser projectors to supplant/complement XMAS light decorations in front yard...
