Defend Assange and WikiLeaks on Human Rights Day in Melbourne

Remember WikiLeaks? The 251,287 leaked embassy cables had a lot to show about the status of public diplomacy. From the story of Bulgaria’s Aleksi “the Tractor” Petrov to disappearing ballot ink in Ukraine, to a Honduran coup d’état, the cables offer firsthand narratives of American diplomats dealing with crises, corruption, and testy world leaders. In embassies from Argentina to Zimbabwe, diplomats worked tirelessly to promote American diplomacy in a world frequently hostile to the United States.

They didn’t get much help back home. The cables show how policymakers frequently misread public diplomacy messages and opportunities, and reveal conflicting approaches from multiple Washington stakeholders intent on their own agenda, unaware of realities on the ground, creating a deepening gulf between Washington and the field.

Journalist Mary Thompson-Jones gave a timely conversation on past practices and how it impacts the current Trump administration.

On 15 Jan 2011 a massive protest rally and March was held in Sydney to support Julian Assange

Kirk and Palina continued to help bring particular focus to the horrible conditions in which Pfc. Bradley Manning is being held due to his alleged divulgence of information (particularly the "Collateral Murder" video) to WikiLeaks.

Melbourne Protest to defend Julian Assange at State Library, Melbourne 4.30pm, this Friday, Dec 10

The latest revelation by whistle blowing site, Wikileaks has brought emabarrasment to US officials as secret diplomatic cables from American embassies worldwide have come to light, including criticisms by Bank of England Governor that UK prime minister David Cameron "lacked depth" and French leader, Nicolas Sarkozy was an "emperor without clothes"

Ever since Wikileaks captured the headlines and the imagination of journalists all over the world with its shocking Collateral Murder video, large leaks of data, often obtained through hacking, have become more and more common. Just in the last few years, we’ve seen major world-shaping news events coming out of hacks and leaks: the Sony hack, the Hacking Team breach, and of course the DNC hack, among others. As journalists, we have a duty to look into data and documents regardless of its origin. But now that governments are starting to take advantage of journalists’ thirst for leaks, how should reporters approach this data and sources? This talk will take the audience through a quick history of the rise of leaking, a few notable examples and how they were handled, and a personal reflection on what journalists got right – and what they got wrong – in an attempt to better understand how to deal with events like these in the future.

Seen on Portobello Road. It looks like Julian Assange is on his way to becoming a Che Guevara-style icon of resistance/rebellion.

Clark said he didn't bring the WikileaksTruck on to #FtMeade before, but felt it was ok after #Manning said in his statement he provided documents to #wikileaks
