Crowd jubilant as Ecuador grants Julian Assange political asylum - 16.08.2012
A large crowd of supporters of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and US soldier Bradley Manning descended on the Ecuador embassy on 16.08.2012 to wait for news of a decision by the Ecuadorean government on Assange's application for political asylum.
At 1:30pm word came through embassy oficials that the government in Quito had granted asylum to Assange on humanitarian grounds. Despite cheering and applause from the crowd, it was widely accepted that Assange's problems are far from over, and this might just be a pyrrhic victory.

Julian Assange's supporters at Ecuador Embassy. London, 21.06.2012
Wikileaks press spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson and personal friend and surety bond-provider Sarah Saunders made staements this afternoon outside the Ecuador embassy in Hans Crescent to explain that Julian Assange is well and in good spirits as he remains inside the embassy awaiting news of his application for political asylum.
A group of supporters from the Bradley Manning campaign group Friends of Bradley Manning (UK) also arrived to begin a vigil in support of Assange. Members of hacktivist group Anonymous also attended.

Kensington Town Hall, London - April 2011
WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange's bail hearing, 14.12.2010
I know this is definitely old news as Assange is now out on bail and is holed up in the countryside on mansion-arrest with an electronic tag, but I still wanted to post my own personal record of the day, as a large, international Press scrum and a group of enthusiastic WikiLeaks supporters gathered outside Westminster Magistrates' Court whilst Assange's fate was decided inside.
As we know, he was granted bail, but was sent back to prison because the Crown Prosecution Service objected and lodged their intention to appeal this decision. Bizarrely, they seem to have told a bit of a huge fib to Mark Stephens - Assange's lawyer - by telling him that the Swedish Prosecutor was the party objecting to bail, when it turns out it was the CPP all along!
Two days later their objection was tossed out by a judge at the Crown Court.
In the meanwhile, the American Government continues to behave stereotypically, and is now trying to twist and contort US law to find a plausible excuse for demanding that the bootlicking British Government hand Assange over to them so they can show him first hand how right he was to expose their lies, corruption and iniquities to the public view.
Fort Meade, Maryland, Saturday afternoon June 1, 2013. Human rights activists from the Bradley Manning Support Group, Veterans For Peace, Code Pink and many other groups marched east on Rt. 175 ('Desolation Row') from Reece Gate to Llewllynn Avenue for a rally and "Speak Out" in support of Army Private Bradley Manning, whose court martial for releasing classified material to Wikileaks was to commence on June 3. Speakers included Eathan McCord, Dan Choi, Sarah Shourd, Ann Wright and Daniel Ellsberg. My crowd size guesstimate is around 750. Interactions between the absurdly numerous and over-armed police and the activists were generally respectful and, thankfully, peaceful.

I decided to add an extra boolean test to the previous keyword frequency visualization. Now, I would only plot a found keyword if the same alpha-numeric page also contained either 'WTC' or 'Towers'.
The first thing I noticed was that nobody started text paging 'WTC on fire' or 'towers are on fire' until 6 minutes after the first plane hit. Might just be bad data analysis on my part. I will look into it.
The second thing I noticed is there was a single hit for the words 'fire' and 'towers' about two hours before the first plane hit. EUREKA, I exclaimed. I have found the smoking gun to point to either stupid planning (didn't use code words like 'Money Penises' or 'Double Venti Latte' instead of 'World Trade Center Towers') or conspiracy frame-job ('Remember, Sam Billington, in two hours when the WTC Towers catch fire from all the jet fuel, you, Sam Keith Billington from Long Island, should be sure to be at least 5 blocks away because those babies are coming down.')
Alas, it was just a grease 'fire' going off at the Litchfield 'Towers'. Oh well.

Remember WikiLeaks? The 251,287 leaked embassy cables had a lot to show about the status of public diplomacy. From the story of Bulgaria’s Aleksi “the Tractor” Petrov to disappearing ballot ink in Ukraine, to a Honduran coup d’état, the cables offer firsthand narratives of American diplomats dealing with crises, corruption, and testy world leaders. In embassies from Argentina to Zimbabwe, diplomats worked tirelessly to promote American diplomacy in a world frequently hostile to the United States.
They didn’t get much help back home. The cables show how policymakers frequently misread public diplomacy messages and opportunities, and reveal conflicting approaches from multiple Washington stakeholders intent on their own agenda, unaware of realities on the ground, creating a deepening gulf between Washington and the field.
Journalist Mary Thompson-Jones gave a timely conversation on past practices and how it impacts the current Trump administration.

18th December 2010 would see a “Black Saturday”. People around the internet would display a black profile pic across the major social networking websites to protest against the state’s hostility against whistle blowers (Wikileaks and Julian Assange). It would also see a number of people around the globe wearing black clothes or tying black badges on arms. The very same ...day supporters of life, liberty, freedom and transparency would write a common e-mail to UK Supreme Court (enquiries@supremecourt.gsi.gov.uk ) as a symbolic message from the well meaning citizens across the globe, pleading what the highest court could do to set a precedent for the generations to come that would protect whistle-blowers and free media.
This message would demonstrate the strength of the silent majority which today, is in favor of Julian & friends and against the governments in front of governments across the globe. This message would also suggest the governments that the citizens have digested and accepted the bitter truth as it came to them, now it is turn of state to have a face-off with the truth and respect those who helped bringing it out or else the majority would overrule them someday.

WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad -- including two Reuters news staff.
Reuters has been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-site, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded. For further information please visit the special project website

For Immediate Release: Day before Wikileak of TPP Document - 13
Cities Mobilized to Shine a Light on Secret Trans-Pacific Partnership
"Trade" Deal Telling Congress "Don't Fast Track a Train Wreck - FLUSH
the TPP!"

SEATTLE - On Tuesday evening citizens in Seattle and 12
other cities appeared on overpasses and roadsides to pull the
Trans-Pacific Partnership, aka TPP, out of the shadows and into the
light of public scrutiny. From Dallas to DC, San Diego to Seattle,
Tucson to Detroit, Baltimore to Bellingham, Spokane to Chicago
people took their messages to interstate overpasses, prominent
monuments, and busy city streets using coordinated daytime and
nighttime, high visibility tactics.
They deployed giant banners saying No New NAFTA, mobilized LED light
panels saying "(thumbs up) Democracy, STOP The TPP," and projected with
spotlights messages like "Don't Fast Track A Train Wreck." These
coordinated citizen's actions coincided with ongoing TPP negotiations
taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah from November 12-24
and today's anticipated release by Congressperson Rosa DeLauro and
George Miller detailing the growing opposition to "Fast Track" among
Congress, and preceded today's surprise release by Wikileaks of a leaked
chapter of the secretive "TPP" agreement. [Here
is Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch initial interpretations of the
chapter on intellectual property.]
The TPP has been called NAFTA on steroids, a "Corporate Coup," and
concerned citizens from across the nation are calling on Congress to
"Flush It!" and to oppose President Obama's request to renew "Fast
Track" authority to commit our country to this secretive agreement that
has less to do with trade, than it does with dismantling any domestic
policies that undermine future profits for transnational capital and
corporations.
Bill Moyer, Executive Director of the Backbone Campaign stated "Only a
bought a sold government would sign a treaty that sacrifices our
capacity as communities and country to pass laws for workers benefit,
and the protection of our communities and our natural resources."
The Trans-Pacific Partnership has been negotiated under secrecy for 3
years. Obama is now pushing to have it swiftly approved to much to the
dismay of members of Congress, most of whom haven't even been allowed to
see the text. While Congress is constitutionally required to negotiate
any international treaties, Fast Track or granting Obama Trade Promotion
Authority would forfeit the Congress' responsibility and the public's
right to weigh in on the TPP negotiations.
Perhaps in response to growing citizen outrage letters were release
today from both Democrats and Republicans challenging President Obama's
request for renewal of Fast Track authority. [From Today's Public
Citizen announcement: The
151-signature DeLauro-Miller letter, additional
letter from Democratic Ways & Means members, One
of two letters, this led by Representative Walter Jones (R-NC)]
One of the illuminated messages on Tuesday read "Corporate Tribunals
WTF?" This referred to how the TPP would give more power to corporate
interests including the ability for foreign companies to sue for
taxpayer compensation if any domestic law diminished the company's expected future profits.
Masked as a trade deal, the agreement has been negotiated under
supervision of 600 unelected corporate "trade advisors" while the text
has been hidden from members of Congress, the press, and the public.
What has been learned about the TPP has come through leaked texts, and
is alarming to members of Congress worried about sovereign powers being
negotiated away, public health officials, labor representatives,
environmental groups, and advocates of consumer issues.
"The TPP, the largest ever of it's kind, is a race to the bottom
international agreement on domestic and international policies of food
safety, internet freedom, medicine costs, financial regulation, and the
environment," says Kristen Beifus, executive director of Washington Fair
Trade Coalition."
Trade Justice organizations have declared December 3rd a "Global Day of
Action Against the TPP to resist toxic trade agreements." Citizens are
urged to take action in their own community, contact their
congressperson, and learn more about the TPP's dismantling of democracy
by visiting VoteNoFastTrack.org.
Citizens can find out where their congressperson stands and tweet them
Tuesday's coordinated actions were organized by the Backbone Campaign,
which specializes in "amplifying citizen engagement with creative
tactics and artful activism" in collaboration with Public Citizen's
Global Trade Watch, PopularResistance.org, Fair Trade Coalitions in
Washington and Oregon, the Overpass Light
Brigade network, and more.
The coordinated day of action follows on the heals of an action in
September when to the surprise of secret service, members and allies of
PopularResistance.org and the Backbone Campaign "redecorated"
the United States Trade Representatives office by scaling the building
and unfurling giant banners demanding a release of the TPP text. The
Backbone Campaign is grateful to Wikileaks for beginning that process.

Assange supporters at Ecuadorean embassy fear police invasion - 16.08.2012
Following the astonishing statement on 15.08.2012 by British officials that the government is willing to revoke the diplomatic status of the Ecuadorean Embassy in Knightsbridge in order to enter it and arrest Wikileaks founder Julian Assange who is applying for political asylum from the Ecuadorean government - which is making their decision known later today - around 20 Wikileaks supporters gathered outside the embassy in the very early hours of 16.08.2012, fearful that the embassy was going to be invaded by the police.
The police had substantially increased their presence around the embassy, and I had sight of around five officers occupying the main foyer of the embassy. They were also closely guarding the fire exits in case Assange tries to make a break for freedom.
Observers say that if the British did this they would be in direct violation of the Vienna Convention, which governs the rules of diplomacy and diplomatic jurisdictions under international law. Already there have been threats to invade British emnbassies abroad should the Foreign and Commonwealth Office carries out its threat.

Public meeting in support of WikiLeaks and Julian Assange - London, 07/02/2011
As WikiLeaks' editor-in-chief Julian Assange fights against legal attempts this week by the Swedish prosecutor to have him extradited to Sweden from where there is a very real fear by many that he will be illegally 'rendered' to the United States where there have been many open, public calls by politicians and pundits for him to be executed or even just murdered on the street without trial, there was a public meeting in support of Assange and WikiLeaks organised by the Stop The War Coalition.
In front of a packed audience of 300 enthusiastic supporters in London's Conway Hall, the speakers were peace activist Jemima Khan, convenor of Stop The War Lindsey German , president of Stop The War Tony Benn and veteran peace activist and historian Tariq Ali, all of whom had attended Assange's first trial day at Belmarsh Magistrate's Court. Assange's legal proceedings have been moved to Belmarsh specifically to make it much more difficult and inconvenient for his supporters to gather and protest.
