As amateur, we always ask how to improve our photography.
Many have said practice, practice and practice more. So shoot more (explore, experiment, exercise) and shoot less (be more critical on your subject and ask questions why, how, what etc before you click the shutter).
It may be useful to find a guiding light on your road of photography. Try to learn from a great master in photography. Study the works, experiences or teachings from the masters that you admire.
Or you may find a mentor. He/she may not be a photographer. Photography is like life. You need to learn more than just the how-to techniques for photography. A mentor we are talking here is not a person who teaches you Photoshop, or the one who shows you the rules of composition. Instead he/she would be someone who leads you to more questions about yourself and questions about the world (and he/she may not give you the answers).
So go and find the guiding light for you.
This is the lighthouse I saw when I was en-route to Cristo Rei in my Lisbon vacation this year.
Happy Monday and great week ahead!
1. I am thankful for Doreen at the local RBC who was not able to directly assist me but was lovely just the same ! :) I am equally thankful for Jess, Rach, Joshua and Gail who helped me to understand and fill out a gosh darn lot of paper work this week.
2. I am thankful for finally letting myself ask someone if we could work together in a life coaching sense. Asking was the first step and usually helps heaps with my getting going.
3. I am thankful for letting myself use Flickr people as my reward for the close of at least one day! :) There are so many great photos with so many great stories to learn. I had been frustrated by my tendency to sort of ‘wander off’ for weeks at a time and then feeling bad about not having communicated with the cool people that come by to say howdy and whose photos and stories that I enjoy. Flickr is a community .. my sitting passively viewing (and being inspired by) people’s photos is not engaging in that community. This is me working to become actively involved in communities that inspire me to come more alive. Yes, I know it is generally wrong to use people but my intentions are good! :)
4. I am thankful for Daniel for letting me know that he has found the gratitude lists that I do to be helpful. His action has been a catalyst to a great deal of important inner work for me (that is why it takes me so much time to respond to comments sometimes). The important stuffs I am working on are how I seem to be able to hand that gratitude out but I could certainly use some practise in being a better receiver of gratitude. To receive gratitude gracefully is to honour the gift inside the person offering the gratitude. (I think) I think this means that to offer gratitude is to say, “your action has made something in me come alive and it caused this reaction/action”?
5. I am thankful for learning about Marshall B. Rosenberg’s writing because his books are helping me to learn to express and receive gratitude.
6. I am thankful to have been able to work with T because she helped me to be accountable for walking my talk and through her example I am learning that I have a lot to learn about celebrating my successes.
7. I am thankful for finishing a large artwork this week along with a couple of medium works. I am truly amazed how limiting the time I allow myself to do my work gets so much more done .. and it has me sneaking in work on my ‘bank day’ to do work simply because doing my work just feels good and right. I am thankful for the feeling I get when the artwork gets done before lunch, not only because I get to eat lunch on time but also because I feel like I have triumphed over something very difficult and I seem to fly through the rest of my work day! :)
8. I am thankful that my younger sister is speaking up for herself and self-directing her life more so. She is really fun and personable (IMO) and I wish for her new work that makes her come more alive and her eyes shine surrounded by more people who value her work! :) I am quite excited for the new opportunities this will bring into their lives! Now I am thinking of what present I can send to her?! :)
9. I am thankful for when I go to bed before 11:30 because then I am much more pleasant to be around! Since I must be around myself 24/7, the experience might just as well be pleasant! ;) I am thankful there is heat in my apartment, the 17 Celsius average was not particularly conducive to rest or thought.
10. I am thankful for putting more effort into understanding and connect with my mom better and differently. This is helping me to recognize more of the gazillion loving ways she is and has always been. This has also been a smidge humbling [*cough] because it has helped me to see how she always seems to go the extra mile but I haven’t always recognized this and am still practising recognizing this. For instance, she was at the store and sent me a text message asking if I would like her to pick up some things while she was in town. Yes, please! :) I asked for a certain cheese, she brought the certain cheese AND another type of cheese that I like! (this makes me feel more special) I asked her to bring some dry beans for protein .. she brought me some of the meat that I sometimes eat when I am with her. While meat doesn’t agree with my digestive tract so well I can see that she brought the meat because (I suspect) she believes that good meat is important to be healthy AND our family hasn’t always been able to afford nice things so to have good meat is a treat AND she knows that I am working on doing my artwork so this is her way of being supportive and cheering me on. She also brought me some black sharpie pens to help me do my work. I am thankful at how I am getting better at offering her the opportunity to either hear or read my gratitude list and how I am getting better at simply shutting up and listening for her to talk about what she wants to and leaving the rest alone. That has been a challenge for me in the past.
11. I am thankful for these materials I have been reading this week
* Dr. Seuss books are awesome with the sauce! It amazes me how much wisdom can be gained from reading some rhyming words of a children’s book. I don’t know that I have a favourite at the moment though. I hated reading as a kid because I couldn’t get the words to be still long enough to read the darned things - now I read as much as I can fit into my brain! I heart reading. :) I am so very thankful that I have Irlen filters and some adaptive software now to access information that I always tried to get at. People will only put up with so many questions, believe it or not! ;)
* Letters to a young artist : building a life in art by Julia Cameron. Some of the back at forth defensiveness can be a little grating on the nerves but it still has some very useful kernels wisdom to impart, IMO.
12. I am thankful for Simon Sinek’s TED talk (that I have listened to at least five times so far!) It kind of haunts my thoughts on why/how/what I could do better.
13. I am thankful for allowing myself the time and space to think about what I want to communicate with people before interacting because it feels authentic and it certainly is good to know the world does not go all Wacky Wednesday when it takes me a bit longer to reply.
14. I am thankful for the window cleaning guy this morning who kindly washed the back of my inside kitchen windows this morning because it is the one that causes me much grief and cussing when I take it out and repeatedly attempt to put it back!
15. I am thankful for getting my butt in gear this morning to go for a short photo walk! I had not taken any photos this week, not even any documentary ones for my artwork. I have been taking my camera along, I just hadn’t taken any photos.
16. I am thankful for signing up for Tim Brownson’s newsletter because he is offering ”free” life coaching to the person that is able to communicate their commitment to making lasting changes. To answer the question of exactly how committed I am through my ability to make previous lasting change is an effective exercise for me because I have been able to see that I have already made several important life changes. When in the middle of changes I don’t always remember that.
17. I am thankful for composting because when I re-pot plants there are often volunteer plants that flower, like the little yellow flowers on the vines that are wrapping themselves around two of my impatiens. They might be cantaloupe or watermelon.
18. I am thankful for taking art history with Dr. Carmen Robertson because she was very encouraging and helpful to me to write my first essays in about a decade. Without her way of doing things I don’t think I would have written the essays for the class, passed the class or had the momentum to heave myself out of the belief that my writing is worthless. I highly recommend taking a class with her if you want to learn about art and art history because she is engaged and engaging in the work, has a sense of fun AND she marks with a green pen! :) I appreciated how she treated people like the adults that we are while introducing us to the subject matter leaving the deeper learning up to each learner. I read and learnt SO much!!
19. I am thankful that people are being very kind and gentle when trying to tell me about my Red Velvet Ropes. This is exciting because it is showing me how my work is becoming more focused and funneling people in their right directions - some toward me, some away! This has lead to several epiphanies about what my goal is by writing what I do. It does not matter how many people read these lists or look at my work. What matters to me is that the people that will come more alive by reading my writing or seeing my artwork can find it!! :) I want to poke my art’s right people in the brain and connect with them in the heart.
20. I am seriously thankful for going back to read Beth and Daniel’s encouraging words on the lemon stack gratitude list .. I feel so tired but .. Thank you, it has been a really long week.
21. Thank you for reading, that is what I had to give, see you next week.
1. I am thankful for the new moon and clear sky on the way home from Saskatoon so that I could see and enjoy the blanket of stars. Stars remind me of our human-ness and how life changes but the stars keep on keeping on. When things seem messy for me, seeing the stars always reminds me that everything is okay and is going to be okay because everything turns out. They also remind me about where my focus has been so that if I want a different result I need to adjust and fine-tune myself.
2. I am thankful for posting a bunch of daffodils on my biggified website. I like having more freedom and influence on how I put into the world. I have also had the website for over a year and feel it is time to give it more love by making it more homey. Living flowers definitely say welcome home to me! :)
3. I am thankful for Iannone’s because not only do they connect you with your right shoe (and sock) they also know me by name! Chris had the credit I had on file pulled and waiting for me at the cash register before I even had my new socks picked out! I am really thankful they listen to their customers too because I talked Tim’s ears off about Smart wool socks and now they sell a really great selection there! :) (They are also clearing out stock for the new season if you need shoes or socks and enjoy saving some cashola go ASAP! :)
4. I am thankful for the window display at Traditions Handcraft Gallery because it drew me in for a look. The light and how it moves with the surfaces of the artwork is delightful. I ended up speaking with Marnie, the new owner. Marnie and her husband Thomas just took over a couple weeks ago and will be renovating for the entire month of February. I learned from Marnie that all the artists carried in Traditions are from Saskatchewan. If you can, go see the shop before February 1 and in March so you can see the changes! There is so much amazing work represented there. Saskatchewan has a lot of talented, hard working artists and craftspeople .. I think it is because we have such extreme weather and it is wonderfully quieter than places with higher, more condensed populations.
5. I am thankful for the Paper Umbrella. They have such beautiful, unique papers and books there. They also sell lovely, quality refillable pens and ink! There is a beautiful, Italian, red leather bound, unlined note book with the most luscious paper you ever did grope! :) Ahem .. if you are really into paper and beautiful writing instruments and books I highly recommend you stop in! It is definitely one of my favourite places to visit! :) I am thankful for Theresa, who is always there when I stop in, because she makes the shop come alive. I love how she is so excited and knowledgeable about the beautiful things Paper Umbrella has! :)
6. I am thankful for Shannon .. who seems to be telepathic lately!? :) I liked how she told me how her Mom’s bionic-a-sizing went at the mechanics (very well - YAY! :) even before I asked because I have been thinking about it and sending happy thoughts for at least a month now! :) I really appreciate how she seems to know just the right words to say with a chuckle to remind me why I keep working at this stuff even when it doesn’t seem to be a very intelligent thing to choose to do. I am very thankful to have her in my life, not everyone has the gift to tease me and make me laugh when I am wound up tighter than a fiddler’s fart! Life does not have to be taken so seriously .. golly, who knew!? ;-)
7. I am thankful for happy thoughts and doing things that force me to have happy thoughts because it makes me smile! Smiling draws other people that enjoy smiling to me too! :) The fellow smilers of the world are some good looking people too! Fellow Smilers Unite! ;)
8. I am thankful for giving a Proper Gift* to someone whose name I didn’t know at the time of deciding to give the gift. Oh. My. Goodness. Giving a semi-surprise Proper Gift to a semi-stranger .. Best Thing Ever! Try it! I double dog dare you! :)
9. I am thankful that my learning legs combined with arms for Shiva Nata is gaining more flow every day! :) The patterns are beginning to make sense and I am learning a lot about my own patterns!
10. I am thankful that the thing I decided to learn is going well .. and I am glad I decided to not tell anyone about it yet because yapping about something can really get in the way of practising and learning a thing.
11. I am thankful for the red and white tulip and purple crocuses that have bloomed “on my land” this week! :) The hyacinth flowers are vibrantly magnificent in the ending of their life cycle. The way the petals curl and deep colours are mesmerising. (and it’s scent is reduced significantly!) Flowers and people .. both beautiful as they allow themselves to simply be.
12. I am thankful for pasting links on the top of my lists when I’m not able to write about them at that time because I would have totally forgotten about this 1:14 minute video that does contain some swearing (and the word Vagina) For Those with Vaginas! :) I would like to also add to the video that Planned Parenthood also prevents pregnancies and deaths by empowering people with information and things that prevent pregnancy and disease(s).
13. I am thankful things are all good with my transplant. :)
14. In case you missed it last week, I am super thankful for Jessica from the Cornwall Centre Body Shop for connecting me with the right body butter for my skin!! My skin feels so very much better and my hands haven’t bled since Thursday when I was in Saskatoon taking photos on a very cold day! :) Rock On Jessica!!! :) Thank you for giving a bean and being interested in what you choose to do! :)
Thank you for you. I hope someone gives you a surprise gift that you really like .. that would be super cool! I can already imagine you glowing from the inside out. You have such a beautiful smile! :) Take care of you and your loving ones.
* A Proper Gift is a gift given with a delightful presentation (that includes at least one ribbon bow) to a person that just seems to sing the gift’s name and vice versa. I like to include a short note of why/how/what I am thankful about them.
new kani tale all told by the Kani you may read, Looking through my childhood was quite refreshing i suppose not as scary nor grueling quite the shocker huh? Well, i never left my home when i was growing up. I felt like i was in complete captivity. I was always alone, or so i thought. I used to have "imaginary friends" if thats what its called however they weren't the usual ones. Its way more complex to even explain. When i was looking however, i found a picture, of me with 5 shadow like creatures. They were shaped like people weird. I learned two things about myself while seeing the image one i can't draw, and two I had a knowing of something, something that I'm still figuring out. I question what? Who? When? Why? How? What does this all mean?! What am i telling Myself?!? I have yet to know. Still.[ whoaaaas new story! Yep! Kani's story is so fun to write and learning about her makes me interested and even a few of you? Who knows! But more is defiantly coming!! Byeee]-<3 Channie PS, the "ghost" thing is a child like form of kani it was a pain in the butt editing it but i think its kweel. And a bit ruff but i REALLY JUST WANTED TO POST MORE KANI TALESSS >_< next time it will be more neater i promise XD also i did expression work on kani she is serving the "Isul" face XD an if you want to stay posted just say in le comments and you will stay posted!! ^.^
"She's amusing herself with her book at the moment, but all too soon she'll probably be bombarding you with 'why,' 'how,' 'what'. This phase of growing up is the one of the endless awkward questions."
The first thought that came to mind last night was "Um, why, how, what, er, yeah".
Then made me chuckle. Liam was so fast asleep he didn't even stir when the flash fired.
When he saw the picture this morning he just laughed!
My drawn mind-map to explain the "why/how/what" to colleagues interested by visual harvesting. It's easy to recognise my sources: Sunni Brown, Mike Rohde, etc

You know sometimes I wonder why, how, what for? Why do I do what I do? lol...how many do's can I say in one sentence..lol. Anyway..it's because I love it..it's my outlet...my vision...my look at the wonderful beauty around us. But ever so often the question comes back to wonder in this head of mine...can I realy shoot pics that others will enjoy and that will "mean" something to them and not just me. If a photo is only loved by the shooter then it is strictly for the shooters emotional connection. My goal is to shoot the beauty for others as well as myself and it is small mini shoots like the photos you see today that remind me...just maybe I can make it...I just may get there...there is hope for my dream. I thoroughly enjoyed having a mini shoot for a beautiful family yesterday. If I can do this in my living room...hmm..anything is possible. I thought I would share just a few shots of thier beautiful faces. Have a wonderful evening! And thank you to the family that let me "play" with their beautiful children.
Blessings, Andrea
How many times
have you cried all night?
walked the floors
back and forwards
sat shaking alone in the dark
wondering
wondering
why?
How?
what happened?
How you ended up here?
Alone?
Wondering?
Where the other one is?
Why your missing piece
is lost forever
How many days
have passed
in numbness
that you can't remember
what you did
said
where you went
what you were supposed to be doing
only to wake up the next day
to find out
you never did
what you planned or
hoped to do
How many years
have slipped by
with your love invading your dreams
though you try to fight it
ignore it
battle it out
let it go
go with it
cry it out
shake it
scream it out
How many years have gone by and it is still there
a little burning candle
lit
heating up a crumbling corner of your heart
the only part of you that still remains unfrozen
And I love walking past this artist's atelier- Roberto Barr (A Brazilian artist with a workshop on Rue Blaes in Brussels).
I would love one of his works on my wall but my teachers salary doesn't quite stretch to art work- one day perhaps- but I love going and staring at the atelier window and peering in to see what is new inside.
He seemed a very friendly artist and was kind enough to let me take a photo of this picture in the window..
..
Becot answering all those questions; What, why, how, what, ... In the meantime he is flying his Calomil 1.4 that is pulling some 15 kg.
(I decided after learning more tools to update this pic which was kinda boring.)
Day 3 of orientation without my beloved SLR. The only showers are by the boy's room and I didn't bring a big enough towel, plus like I explained in yesterday's photo it is freeezing so if i showered I would catch nemonea (cant spell that word) so as you can see my hair is suffering.
I don't know why, how, what I was doing but it came spontaneously when I was I walked into this toilet. Maybe I really didn't want to walk on the grimy floor, maybe I was spiderman in a previous life. Who knows!? :)
I hope one day to find my way. I have been left empty, hurt and broken hearted. I ask why? How? What did I do wrong to have him leave me..leave us? I gave him everything I had. He betrayed me. Betrayed us. It will be a long road to recovery. However with the love and support of my dear friends and family I will one day find my way.
Instead of waking up this morning to the proprietary echoing blip of the iPhone’s default alarm tone, a bunch of iPhone owners awoke this week to find the alarms they set had been turned off. Why? How? What the fuck happened? gawker.com/apples-newest-software-update-will-shut-off-yo...
In the middle of the roll, this picture suddenly shows up. Why, how, what is going on... well, whatever it is, it is swept away in a wave of light and movement....

Unsure when/why/how/what/where the depression started, but something came out of nowhere yesterday and made this the longest day ever.
Thanks for the twitter-back Dave :-)
