In the town of Gjøvik, Martin Whatson pays tribute to the craftsman. Gjøvik was home to the first private glass factory in Norway, and it's only fitting that a three-story-tall glassblower now decorates one of the town's walls.
On Virginia Street, Aberdeen - created by Norwegian artist Martin Whatson for the Nuart 2022 Festival
Well it's Sydney harbour again.
It's twilight - Saturday, 12th October, 2024.
And the nearby harbourside restaurant 'Sails On Lavender Bay' is belting out retro music - notably Elton John's version of the Beatles classic: 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds'.
And I thought - well that could be a title for this photograph, lol. Those clouds are diamond-like.
And I am certain that Lucy just caught the last ferry across the harbour to the 'Chinese Laundry' nightclub at Barangaroo.

So here's Elton with 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds':

Norwegian Martin Whatson’s stencil art, like his Behind the Curtain series, serves to reveal the cacophony of color hidden behind the halftones of daily existence. This one is painted at the Wynwood Doors outdoor exhibit in Miami Beach, Fla.
Wynwood Walls - Miami
« Behind the curtain » reprend les codes et le mélange des styles graffiti et pochoir, qui caractérisent le travail et la « griffe » de Martin Whatson.
Ce mur a été réalisé avec le soutien de Smashed Canvas, un bar à bière resto « culturel » qui organise, indépendamment de l’Art Basel, des expositions dans le quartier de Wynwood.
"Behind the curtain" takes up the codes and the mixture of graffiti and stencil styles, which characterize the work and the "label" of Martin Whatson.
This wall was created with the support of Smashed Canvas, a "cultural" restaurant beer bar that organizes exhibitions in Wynwood independently of Art Basel.
Batik on habotai silk
60cm x 60cm
Currently in the International Year of Batik Exhibition at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum in Warwickshire until 10th August.
A lot of my recent work is quite experimental, deliberately aiming to bypass the thought process and allowing for a more intuitive expression.
I took the unusual step of posting the work stage by stage on Facebook www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1328414350&locale=en_GB
Creating work this way is like stepping into the unknown and I like that. No boundaries, just unlimited possibilities.
I know and understand the medium of batik very well, so I can make marks and textures well enough without any overthinking.
One of the things that I've always loved about this medium is the element of chance that comes with the unique interaction of wax resist and dyes. Add to that mix wonderful textural black mono-print marks, discharged browns of potassium permanganate and all the resultant chemical interactions and changes to the fibre structure, the overlaying of procion dye colours in successive wax removals and re-workings and that chance element takes on another dimension.
Moonchild was created with a sense of playfulness and spontaneity.
It reflects back to me all of the thoughts, feelings, emotions and ideas that have gone before into an almost human form, iconic, caught somewhere between the digital and analogue, spirit striving for form. An apparition.
Batik on cotton using home made natural dyes by Chilean artist Cata Espina in the International Year of Batik Exhibition at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum until 10th August. www.ragm.co.uk/whatson
I love the use of abstract imagery with the three figures (which I didn't see at first.)
This is a wall-hanging approx 70cm x 90cm.
This fine work is exceptional and an extraordinary achievement in batik, really elevating a traditional textile technique to an art form on another level.
Cata describes her work:
'I am an Architect and an Interior designer.
I first tried batik back in 2004 when I was studying interior design.
My early work was using reactive dyes on linen. However, a few years ago I began to move into the world of natural dyes in order to produce a more sustainable art.
Nowadays, I am only using homemade dyes from kitchen waste or tree leaves, botanical extracts and organic indigo, working on cotton, paper or silk. I am planning to grow my own dye garden in the future.
Much of my inspiration comes from nature, I enjoy observing textures, patterns, movements. Music is vital too. I like to echo all that in my work.' en.cataespina.cl/quien-es-about-catalina-espina

A collage of this amazing street art one can find in downtown Melbourne. We only walked through a handful of the street art lanes as we had a plane to catch. Highly recommended if you are ever over that way. Each of the street art lanes have been named to depict a theme such as AC/DC Lane and Hosier Lane. Amazing what some people can do with a few cans of spray paint!

Down the road, Martin Whatson have created another stunning piece. Here the artist decided to underline the simplicity and beautiful stringency in color and shape of the multicolored houses creating a delicate ballerina in a multicolored skirt matching perfectly with the red roofs and colored facades. Martin Whatson calls this piece ’Passé’ as one of the main positions of ballet depicting a beautiful ballerina on a grey background.

LEGO Star Wars is celebrating its 20th anniversary with special events in Toronto, including a display at Union Station with a record-breaking 36,440 LEGO Stormtrooper minifigures.
The Force will be strong in Toronto in August as LEGO Star Wars celebrates its 20th anniversary with some special experiences in the city.
You can check out a record-breaking display of 36,440 LEGO Stormtrooper minifigures at Union Station from Monday, Aug. 19 to Sunday, Aug. 25, just west of the Great Hall at street level.
“I had the opportunity to combine my design skills with my most cherished childhood toy almost 13 years ago, and I have never looked back,” Stockwell said in a statement announcing the anniversary celebrations. “LEGO play and Star Wars is a dream collaboration, and it is really special that we are taking the celebration to Toronto as I grew up in Ontario and studied design in this amazing city. One of the most incredible driving forces behind our designs for the past 20 years are the incredible, loyal fans that continue to inspire us. We can’t wait for what comes next!”
First introduced at the International Toy Fair in New York in February 1999, the 20-year legacy of LEGO Star Wars is also being celebrated with five new special edition throwback sets. The LEGO Star Wars collaboration, the LEGO Group’s first intellectual property franchise, has spawned approximately 700 sets and 1,000 LEGO Star Wars minifigures, as well as five video games, several television and online series and lots of other fun merchandise.
“Our collaboration with the LEGO Group remains a huge success because it allows people to explore the Star Wars galaxy in a very unique way,” Derek Stothard, vice president of licensing at Lucasfilm, said in the statement. “Whether you’re meticulously building the Millennium Falcon for a display shelf or reimagining the battles with LEGO Star Wars models, the LEGO Star Wars range allows us to engage with fans of all ages who find the Star Wars galaxy as special as we do.”
On the road to Korucam, you'll come across Mavi Kosk, or Blue House. This was built in 1973 by Byron Pavlides, a Greek Cypriot entrepreneur and friend of Archbishop Makarios. The views from the upstairs rooms are spectacular, and whatever reason he had, you can appreciate Pavlides' reason for choosing such a location.

Arnotts has teamed up with the National Botanic Gardens and one of Ireland’s leading visual artists Maser, to proudly celebrate the beauty of Dublin city and to bring the outdoors indoors. ‘The City is My Garden’ will be brought to life in the store, in our windows on Henry Street. Maser will also create a unique graffiti installation on the wall of number 1 Liffey Street, a key landmark when approaching Arnotts from the Ha’penny bridge.
Through our windows, we are creating an urban garden to educate customers on all aspects of the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland, including sustainability facts, whilst incorporating floral fashion elements to create an outstanding must-see visual display.
We would like to invite you to view the urban garden in our windows on Henry Street and pick up one of our limited edition information in-store leaflets with your complimentary sunflower seeds to bring a little piece of our garden home to yours. whatson.arnotts.ie/uncategorized/the-city-is-my-garden/
