This lighthouse is situated at the most westerly point of the British Isles. My uncle was lighthouse keeper here for 14 years before automation in 1988.The drive to this place is not for the faint hearted but the surroundings are stunning in their rugged beauty.

It gives an entirely different view of the westernmost point of Portugal and the mainland of Europe

“Land's End is a headland and tourist and holiday complex in western Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, on the Penwith peninsula about 13 km west-south-west of Penzance at the western end of the A30 road. To the east of it is the English Channel, and to the west the Celtic Sea.

Land's End is the most westerly point of mainland England. However, it is not the westernmost point on mainland Great Britain. This title narrowly goes to Corrachadh Mòr in the Scottish Highlands.”

Cabo da Roca is the most western point of Portugal and the mainland of Europe.

After the 3 mile hike to Cape Alva, the Westernmost point of contiguous United States located in the Olympic National Park of Washington State, I was having a rest and enjoying the great view of the beach. Out of nowhere, 4 black tailed deer showed up and walked along the beach until they found an area of fresh green grass and scattered shades behind me. The funny thing is they just walked pass me within just 10 feet as if I did not exist at all!

Cabo da Roca is is a cape which forms the westernmost point of the Sintra Mountain Range, of mainland Portugal, of continental Europe, and of the Eurasian land mass.

Rather like Land's End in England.

Can you see the tourists in the distance?

My sister and me (we have a 21 year age difference and we were born 2000 miles away from each other)!

My sister was born in Coimbra, Portugal. But lived for 8 years in Laurenco Marques (Maputo), Mozambique. She worked in a bank there and then did a stint as a presenter on the tv there (can you believe they only transmitted for a few hours in the late 60s/early 70's? Some people from there still stop her on the street after they recognize her!

After Mozambique gained its independence, she moved back to Portugal and settled in Cascais. She worked in Lisbon at a bank until she retired just before my visit with her. Can you believe I only met her for the very first time, when I turned five? Anyway, I love her very much because she is my sister. But I have only seen her a few days every few years throughout my life. It makes it very hard to be close to her. If we lived closer, we probably would be like glue. But circumstance, two different cultures and perhaps a little jealousy have caused a distance in our relationship.

But some things that we do share in common is travel and people. She has been all over this world and loves exploring the globe. I share that passion and hope someday to be able to do the same thing.

We went out to the westernmost point of Africa to walk along the beach and get dinner at one of the fish shacks off the beach.

That night Pat & I had abalone for the first time ever - didn't know what it was at first, since we're not familiar with the French name, but Pat and I thought it was phenomenal and finally learned what it was when they brought out the shell to show us.

The shot was taken from the road to Guincho Beach. Cabo de Roca is the Western-most point in continental Europe. THe light house is pretty prominent, and you can just make out the marker at the cliff's edge. There's a three foot tall stone wall surrounding the circle with the marker. On the West side of the circle it's a 350 foot drop down. On the South side, you can climb down the rocks. What looks like a dirt path there is a rocky climb down about 150 feet. Getting down there was pretty cool.
