You were there for summer dreaming

And you gave me what I need

And I hope you'll find your freedom

For eternity, for eternity

A pair of Cooper's Hawks were busy flying to various trees and trying to extract some twigs. They were then flying back to another tree that was being used to build a nest. It was quite a neat experience and they let me get a bunch of images while they worked on their material gathering.

Canatara Park, Sarnia, ON

There were choruses of them on the forest floor, joined by others singing the pinks, whites, yellows and a few purples.

They're only here for a short time each Spring so it was good to catch their recital.

The lads at work were keen on Mount Keen (which I did a few weeks ago), so here we are again, cycling up Glen Tanar to get there. The weather is perfect as shown by these reflections in Trout Loch.

Mount Keen is my 11th Munro and this is my second time of climbing it. It is the most easterly of all the Munros and stands at 939 Meters (3080 feet), forming an almost perfect cone. A 7 mile cycle up Glen Tanar gets us to the foot of the 2 mile ascent up the mountain.

While You Were Dreaming

Have a great weekend my friends :)

View On Black

While you were dreaming,

I gazed upon your brow,

Tucked away from cold of night,

You're lay beside me now,

And as we lie and rest our heads,

On pillows of purest white,

The moon smiled through the window,

And softly bathed you in its light.

For Macro Mondays - Redux 2018

I've chosen again the theme "holiday bokeh"

We were fortunate to see Kilauea at night under a starry sky. This is a blended image, one of the volcano, the other of the sky. While it is not accurate in the placement of stars above the volcano, I think it is truthful in its representation of the experience.

Happy Wednesday! Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

How I wish you were here

We're just two lost souls

swimming in a fishbowl

year after year

Running over the same old ground

What have we found?

The same old fears

Wish you were here

We were driving through a lovely stretch of Northwestern Iceland admiiring the wonderful mountainscapes when we happened upon this horror. Gosh how I hate tourism operators who rape authentic landscapes and cultural places likewise with their absurd global simulacra of poorest taste. I swear I was wishing for a trebuchet to level that thing ;)

There were a lot of Redpolls at William Hawrelak Park yesterday. One of these stood out from the rest because of the overall whiter colouration.

The word "hoary" generally means grayish-white, gray, white, snowy, silver, silvery; or frosty - usually associated with hair and fur colour. I'm a little hoary myself :)

Hoary Redpolls and Common Redpolls have been considered separate species. I have read that genetic testing might reveal that they are colour variations of the Common Redpoll. For now the American Ornithologists' Union considers them as separate.

The top row of my mosaic shows the back and side view of the same Hoary Redpoll. The bottom row shows similar shots of the same Common Redpoll.

The conditions were perfect to shoot Hood with the Milky Way. Lost Lake is the best, really the only place you can shoot this because the Milky Way needs to be south of the Mountain. With the clear skys and the new moon I knew there would be a few photographers there. I assumed every guy I passed from Sandy all the way to the lake who was alone in their car was probably heading to shoot this location. I was right on a few counts. I met Greg and Kenny (sorry, I did not get your last names) and the famous Gary Randall who was leading a workshop with a few other folks. I was on the water, in a line with about 7 other photographers. On my way out when I was done I did not realize there were about 10 more behind us on the hill. I had never been to Lost Lake, but I will be back again.

Someone commented on how close the galactic core was to the mountain, like it was kissing the stars. I liked the way that sounded.

We were having a donut snack at the famous Kenilworth bakery in Queensland when this honeyeater flew on to the next table top and eyeing our donuts.

No, we did not feed it. It stayed just long enough for me to get a quick shot.

The Blue-faced Honeyeater is a large black, white and golden olive-green honeyeater with striking blue skin around the yellow to white eye.

The crown, face and neck are black, with a narrow white band across the back of the neck.

The upperparts and wings are a golden olive green, and the underparts are white, with a grey-black throat and upper breast.

The blue facial skin is two-toned, with the lower half a brilliant cobalt blue.

Juvenile birds are similar to the adults but the facial skin is yellow-green and the bib is a lighter grey.

This honeyeater is noisy and gregarious, and is usually seen in pairs or small flocks.

It is known as the Banana-bird in tropical areas, for its habit of feeding on banana fruit and flowers.

Peaceful Sunday

As we were driving to our motel, the clouds started to get colorful, found a place to pull over and got this!! Hope you are having a blessed week, never forget if you are God's He loves you very much!!!

The terraces were dug following the natural curves of the landscape. The thickness of the walls stores heat during the day and diffuses it at night. Thanks to this method it has been possible to obtain a different microclimate as one goes down and gets closer to the centre. An average temperature difference of 5°C was observed, whereas the difference is only 0.5°C over comparable height differences at the same location. Due to its sheltered position, each of the terraces represents approximately one thousand metres of altitude under normal growing conditions.

There were great and snowy egrets here all battling for something....not sure what but they sure do like to squabble!

We were so happy to see the sun for a bit yesterday!! It has been cloudy for so many days! As I am getting dinner, I can see the sunset which is so special to me. Thank you so much for your visits. I really appreciate them.

Conditions were perfect: 80% chance of rain and strong winds. What could be better? For shooting osprey, nothing. Rain suit for me and my camera and a surprising a lot of other adventurous souls showed up for the show. The pelicans seemed to being doing better than the osprey, dive after dive while the osprey were out in force looking but not catching much. This one did well however, and one greedy pelican made an attempted steal. The osprey pulled up up an away!

If it were not for you and your courage my family would not be around today. Heartfelt gratitude!

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️

We were very lucky to spot this black rhino early in the morning in this part of Masai Mara. The guides mentioned that this is not their usual territory. Apparently there is only about 54 of them in Masai Mara and it is an endangered species.

The black rhino is the rarer and smaller of Africa’s two rhino species. We distinguish it from the larger white rhino by its shape, diet and temperament. It is no more ‘black’, however, than its relative is white. Both species acquire their colour from the mud in which they wallow, so vary from brown to grey.

The main distinguishing feature is the shape of the upper lip. The Black Rhino has a pointy tipped upper lip whereas the White Rhino has a squarish upper lip.

Many thanks for your visit, comments, invites, awards and favs...it is always appreciated.

We were excited to embark on a hiking tour of the secret trail in the nearby touring area of Ohlstadt (aka gate to the famous mountain Heimgarten but we intended to hike to a different summit.) We loaded our car with essentials like water bottles, snacks and hiking boots, and set out early in the morning to begin our adventure.

As we started on the trail, we quickly realized that this was not going to be an easy hike. The ground was slippery due to recent rains, and the trail was very steep. We had to rely on our instincts, sense of direction and outdoor app, as there were no guideposts to show us the way.

Despite the challenges, we were determined to reach the summit. We pushed ourselves to keep climbing, taking breaks to catch our breath and admire the beautiful views along the way. We saw few hikers on the trail, which added to the sense of adventure.

After 2.5 hours of hiking, we finally reached the summit. The view was spectacular, and we felt a sense of accomplishment and awe as we looked out over the valley below.

As we made our way back down the trail, we felt grateful for the experience. It had been a challenging hike, but the reward at the top had been worth it. We felt like we had discovered a secret gem in the touring area!

The cardinals were already visiting when I placed peanuts at the palm stump. Normally they wait for me to go on about my business before heading over to partake in a peanut treat. This guy surprised and delighted me. I watched as he started working his way toward the stump. I was only about ten feet away when he decided to come on down and get a peanut. In this image I think he looks like he is admiring the bounty before choosing just the right nut. He stayed long enough to eat two peanuts before carrying a third one to a branch in oak tree one. I felt very privileged to be allowed to point the camera in his direction and take a couple of shots while standing so close.

I hope everyone has a delightful weekend, happy snapping.

Glacier Lagoon, Iceland

With the never-ending heat in Texas, I wish I were in Iceland for the summer. They have temperature in the 50s during the day and 40s during the night and it rains! No rain here for more than a month and the temperatures are above 100F with lows in the 80s during night.

FIREWORKS IN MY MIND

I feel that I could lose myself

within the warm fold of your arms

the intensity you feel for me

ignites fireworks in my mind

within the recess of my heart

where past love left a void

there's a burning river running through

lighting fireworks in my mind

it's scorching everything I touch

and coursing through my veins

I close my eyes and try to breathe

but still see fireworks in my mind

I feel myself falling deep

in the garden of my dreams

this burning love; intense white heat

creates fireworks in my mind

I walk along my empty beach

and try to stem the flow

I don't want to feel this way

with fireworks in my mind

it feels too much; explosive love

it consumes me with it's madness

somehow you got beneath my skin

caused fireworks in my mind

I'm weakening now as you grow close

but I'm less when you're not here

the coldness that ached and broke my bones

is gone with fireworks in my mind

I need to choose; to do things right

but it's harder when you're here

you took my heart and made it yours

lit fireworks in my mind

If I could choose and have it all

I'd tell you not to go

don't make me choose between the moon and you

with fireworks in my mind

We were out exploring with some friends who came for a visit when late in the day, we were visiting the Pender Harbour area.

"Oh, look at this", came the voice from the back seat of our car. The sun was low on the horizon and it was late afternoon. The voice noticed the cove we had entered, and the way the light was affecting the area. I stopped the car and said, "I am going to take a few pics".

We all got out of the car and mused about enjoying the scene in front of us. "Over here", said the voice. "You can get right down to the water", it continued. Sure enough, in place of mulling about the thorny rose bushes that guarded entrance, there was a way down to the waters edge. After setting up on this colorful place, Kayakers were on their way into my image. So, I waited until they were in the right spot and captured the scene. Thanks voice!

There were five males belting out their characteristic songs claiming territories before the arrival of the females.

Edmonton, Alberta.

The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC has an incredible Azalea Garden. The colors were spectacular.

We were recently in Kamloops where I have been trying for a very long time to photograph the hills and hoodoos. A little research and voila, the way to victory. Fences galore that have in the past skewed my vision or prevented access, now serve as a leading line. Hills so distant, that in the past only a telephoto brought them into view, were now in need of a wide angle lens to fit them in. I was like a kid in a candy shop and it was all there for the taking.

The next number of images will be from Kamloops along Shuswap Dr. East and taking advantage of this area. It was a fun three days to be out and enjoy this very old and wonderful backyard of treasures.

still on the weeping cherry. They have since blown away and the leaves are showing...

Yesterday and today were very sunny days, and in my opinion the first ones in which the sunshine actually felt warm.

Even if the sun is still quite low and the shade covers the garden very early, today I decided to have lunch outside and enjoy a wonderful cold beer!

Isn't it funny how easy we can feel content ;) ♥

Shot last spring at Lake Balboa.

We were looking for the White-faced Ibis last evening a local birder was kind enough to share the sighting. Just before dark the Ibis fly in to an area popular with Cattle Egrets and Night Herons. We found two of them, they are very rare to the Big Island of Hawaii, listed as "accidental". We saw them fly overhead then they disappeared into a bushy area, when I found them the light was very low....going to try again today. The sunsets here have been beautiful.

F/8, 230mm, 1/320, ISO 250 hand held.

There were two adjacent apartments in our tour (see yesterdays photo below). We were able to view them both but weren't permitted to use this back connecting passage. Instead it was go downstairs, go around the outside, go upstairs, and reverse back to this spot ... because the goodies were here. Not that I was all that anxious to use the passage. :)

You were taken away by the wind,

but a breeze brought me the most beautiful whisper...

...What we have in our hearts is the only truth,

and if we deny it, we deny our own existence.

They were foraging for spilt corn. When I was a kid large flocks like this were very common-today not so much (esp. redwing blackbirds)

I went out searching for thunderstorms that were supposed to be sweeping in across the area, but instead I found this incredible little valley. Clouds hanging low in the sky, fog rolling between the trees, the moody scene so to speak, and even in summer when the haze is thick I saw the drama, the promise that stretched out in front of me. I setup, and began adjusting, moving the camera back and forth. The area to shoot was narrow, but handy. I thought about zooming past the evergreens and focusing solely on the valley, but then I thought better of it. Using them as a framing device, letting them give a sense of depth to the scene without distracting overmuch from it. Then the wait was on, between gusts of wind, and the occasional rain rolling through, eventually I began seeing a scene worthy of showing off to my viewers.

We were all expecting a great inversion. God had turned the cooker on that causes the mist to boil up on the valley floor over Castleton. But he forgot to turn the gas down, once it was boiling and soon the mist just came up and up, over us and over the top of the hill. We were waiting for sunrise, for the sun to illuminate the top of the inversion but in the meantime I thought I would amuse myself with a shot of the other togs, which I always find more interesting than the view itself. Strange man, apparently.

PS THERE were many others dotted along the ridge. 0652 hrs on a Monday morning. I couldn't stay. some people have got jobs you know.

These were looking great this morning, when we stopped for Easter treats at the Bijou Bakery, which faces Cayucso Dr, with a convenient exit from the CA-1 freeway. Unsolicited commercial: try the almond croissants! And/or the coffee cake.

Captain James Cass founded the American town in the mid-19th century. His eponymous House, which had fallen into disrepair, was restored by the present owners and is operated as a B&B: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayucos,_California#History

I've been in the public areas and a couple of the rooms: they did a nice job. I know the co-owner slightly. So: another unsolicited commercial!
